Advertised Prices for Specialty Crops at Major Retail Supermarket Outlets ending during the period of 04/18 to 04/301,2

Better News

Ad numbers seem to be on a rising trajectory, though they are still down 25% from this week last year. Onions and potatoes bounced back into the ads this week with retailers more than doubling the number of ads for them. Likely this was courtesy of Vidalia onions, whose arrival to the market was evident in many flyers. Organic produce ads were also bumped up, by 4%. Retailers continued to communicate their efforts to protect employees and customers, with some instituting mandatory wearing of masks. Seasonal changes in produce aisles are right on schedule, virus or no. Cantaloupes, watermelons, zucchini, tomatillos, strawberries, corn, and colored bell peppers were abundantly advertised ahead of warmer weather.

Total ad numbers this week were 232,050, an 11% increase from last weeks 209,112, and the same from 2 weeks ago. Thirteen percent of regularly reported stores had no ad this week and specifically cited COVID-19 as the reason. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 129,642 (56% of all ads), onions and potatoes 15,388 (6%), vegetables 86,058 (37%), herbs 329, and ornamentals 663. The number of ads for organic produce was 28,232, 12% of total ads. The number of ads for hemp were 422.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. There were no significant increases in price for fruit this week. Significant decreases included raspberries at 20%, strawberries at 18%, and Fuji apples at 12%. There were no significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week. There were no significant increases in vegetable prices this week. Significant decreases included only bell peppers (red and orange at 15% and yellow at 13%).
