INTRODUCTIONA Letter from the NSS Executive Director

87th Annual Awards Exhibition

This year brought an international pandemic, social isolation, disturbing images of police brutality, protests, and the violent destruction of public monuments across our nation and abroad.

As our world changes around us at an accelerated pace, it is a welcome respite to enter the glorious Brookgreen Gardens. Here, one can take a truly deep breath, experience nature of the low country in all its glory, and view one of the best yet Annual exhibitions by the National Sculpture Society (NSS).

The works of sculpture in the 87th Annual Exhibition celebrate the contemporary – and timeless – human figure, speak to the human experience, and explore our relationship to other forms of animal life.

National Sculpture Society extends its thanks to all the art lovers, members, visitors, and staff members at Brookgreen Gardens who have supported the NSS Annual Exhibition with enthusiasm for over two decades. As this country’s premier sculpture garden of figurative work, Brookgreen Gardens is an ideal venue for an exhibition that celebrates excellence in sculpture that is inspired by the natural world.

We are also deeply grateful to the exhibition prize-donors who are acknowledged in this catalogue for their encouragement of sculptors and sculpture, and to the members of both the jury of selection and the jury of awards for their part in contributing to a successful show.

NSS supports a rotating exhibition schedule throughout the year at its own gallery in New York City and at venues around the country for the public to view contemporary sculpture, and for sculptors – both emerging and established – to exhibit their work. Please visit us in midtown Manhattan; we look forward to welcoming you!
