A BRIEF HISTORY
Wayanad District came into existence on 1st November, 1980 as the 12th District of
Kerala consisting of Mananthavady, Sulthanbathery and Vythiri Taluks. The name Wayanad
is derived from Vayal Nadu which means the land of paddy fields. It is a picturesque plateau
situated at a height between 700 meters and 2100 meters above the mean sea level nested
among the mountains of the Western Ghats on the Eastern portion of North Kerala and on the
sides of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka States. The culture of Wayanad is mainly tribal oriented.
Though considered as backward, this District is perhaps one of the biggest foreign exchange
earners of the State, with its production of cash crops like pepper,cardamom, coffee, tea,
spices and other condiments.
Govt.Engineering College, Wayanad is one of the 9 Government Colleges Under
Directorate of Technical Education ( DTE ), Govt of Kerala. The college is located 6 km
from Mananthavady, in the hilly district of Wayanad. The campus is situated on the side of
Mananthavady-Kannur state highway.
GEC Wayanad have four regular B.Tech courses - Computer Science & Engineering,
Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and
Mechanical Engineering, a part-time evening B.Tech course in Electronics & Communication
Engineering and two M.Tech courses -Communication Engineering & Signal Processing and
Computer Networks & Security .
The Mission of the college is to impart quality engineering education and to develop
high quality technocrats with ingenuity , creativity, innovation, leadership and ethical values
for the integrity and prosperity of our nation. The vision ensures a better world driven by
technology and rooted in values through enlightened and empowered engineers.
The NSS unit of the college began to function during its early years itself. The current
Programme Officer is Sri. Abid Tharavattath, Computer Programmer (HG). 100 volunteers
are enrolled in this year and the activities are going well.

General Orientation Class
The Programme Officer Mr.Abid Tharavattath took a session in all the five first semester classes
to orient the students to NSS activities. This was the first orientation session for the students under
Kerala Technological University. As a response to this more than 200 applications from first year
students were received for enrollment. Another session for the existing and newly applied volunteers
were also conducted.
Teachers Day Observation
The unit observed the teachers day in a very simple way. The volunteers themselves prepared
greeting cards with good quotations. The program was inaugurated by handing over the first card to
the Principal Dr.V.S.Anitha along with a “Thulasikkathir”. Volunteers met each and every teacher and
handed over the card with teachers day wishes.
NSS Orientation Class
A general orientation class was taken for the newly enrolled volunteers of third and fifth
semester classes. The existing unit were also overflew with more than one hundred fresh applications
against sanctioned intake of fifty. Mr.Fawas K M (S5 EEE) and Ms.Chithra J (S5 CSE) were selected
as the volunteer secretaries (adhoc).
“Snehakiranam” fund collection
A fund collection program was arranged among staff and students of the college for supporting
the HIV patients in Kerala. The fund collection was inaugurated by accepting the first donation from
Prof.Laiju Lukose ( Asst Professor, Mech. Engg Dept). Within a day the requested target was
completed and the amount handed over to the concerned authority.
World Ozone Day – Competitions
With the financial support of Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment
(KSCSTE) Trivandrum , the unit for first time conducted a number of programs in and out of the
campus in connection with World Ozone Day. A poster making competition and slogan writing
competitions were held.
World Ozone Day Observation
The World Ozone Day was observed by the NSS Unit of the college with the financial
support of Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) in a befitted
manner . The whole programme was named O3. Programme Officer Sri. Abid Tharavattath delivered
the message of the day. A poster exhibition was also conducted in the college.
Wick Irrigation Project – Bottle collection
With the technical and financial support of Centre for Water Resource Development and
Management (CWRDM) Kozhikode ,the Unit wish to start terrace farming of vegetables with wick
irrigation method. Volunteers collected plastic pet bottles of size 1litre and 2 litre for this project.
NSS Day Observation
The 47th NSS day was observed by the unit with the orientation session of NSS Indiragandhi
National Award winner and the current Programme Officer Mr.Abid Tharavattath. The experience of
volunteers in their previous period of study were also shared with the new volunteers.
Environment Seminar
An environment awareness seminar was conducted in the college. Sri. N Badusha (
Wayanad Prakrthi Samrakshana Samithi) , Dr.Mathew Mecheri l( Ex NSS Programme Officer ) and
Sri. Abid Tharavattath (Programme Co-ordinator) handled different sessions in the seminar.
Old Age Home Visit
In order to arouse the student community about the difficulties in old age , the unit conducted
a visit to “Thanal” old age home , Dwaraka as part of senior citizens day observation . Volunteers
distributed sweets among the inmates and also staged cultural programs for them. Programme Officer
Sri. Abid Tharavattath inaugurated the program.
Gandhi week observation
In connection with Gandhijayanthi the NSS unit observed the week as Gandhi week. The
volunteers cleaned an area of the campus selected by Principal and Programme Officer , under Swatch
Bharath Mission.
NSS Orientation Class
An orientation class was conducted for the selected NSS volunteers. The class was taken by
the programme officer Mr.Abid Tharavattath. CSE HOD Prof.K.S Valsaraj was also interacted with
the volunteers. The volunteers were familiarised with different activities of NSS and also to manage
different programs.
Terrace farming
With the technical and financial support of Centre for Water Resource Development and
Management (CWRDM) Kozhikode ,the Unit wish to start terrace farming of vegetables with wick
irrigation method. The technical expert from CWRDM Ms.Amrutha visited our college and
demonstrated the preparation of supporting materials for the project, from plastic wastes. Volunteers
collected pet bottles and converted them to stands using plastic wastes from various places. Through
this project the wastes are managed and organic vegetables are grown.
Gandhiweek Closing program
The unit organised programs like National Integration pledge and Gandhi pencil sketch
competition in connection with Gandhi week observation and the program was officially closed with
caption writing contest.
Environment awareness program
In connection with ozone day observation program closing the unit conducted a quiz
competition at GHSS Thalappuzha. Aposter exhibition was also conducted in the school. The leaflets
prepare in connection with the day observation was distributed in the school as well as among public
in Thalappuzha town.
Worldstudents day observation
The birthday of former Indian President Sri.A.P.J.Abdulkalam was observed as students day
by the unit. Union advisor Dr.Mathew Mecheril inaugurated the program. Kumari Reeshna delivered
the commemoration speech.
“Jeevadayini” – Blood donation awareness campaign
The NSS volunyteers visited all the classes and informed the students about the Jeevadayini
project jointly conducted by NSS Technical cell and Kerala State Youth Welfare Board. A number of
students including girls came forward with willingness to donate blood. 224 blood donation
wiilingness papers were received through this campaign.
Terrace farming inauguration
The team from CWRDM under the leadership of Sri. Valsan T , Training Education and
Extension wing head of CWRDM Kozhikode Visited our college and demonstrated various methods
to be followed in terrace farming using wick irrigation method. Volunteers filled some bags with
nutrified soil. Programm Officer Mr. Abid Tharavattath planted the first sapling and inaugurated the
project.Volunteers planted in the rest of the bags.
Grow Bag filling
On Keralappiravi day we started the rest of the organic farming activities. The nutrified soil
prepared by the students under the guidance from CWRDM was filled in the grow bags for making
them ready for planting. The filled bags were arranged over the terrace area of the main block
building.
Sapling Planting
The organic farming activities of the unit was widely appreciated by the college authorities.
The saplings of ladies finger , pea , brinjal and chilly supplied by CWRDM were planted in the
various grow bags arranged over the terrace.. Volunteers enjoyed the joy of planting and cultivating
their own food.
Antiragging Awareness Class
In association with the antiragging committee of the college the unit conducted an antiragging
awareness class for the senior students of the campus. Special judge Justice Vincent Charlie
Inaugurated the program. Sub Inspector of Police Sri Subin and Ad O T James took sessions.
Caring the vegetables
The vegetable plants were cared by the volunteers. The plants were watered and those need
support were given. The bottles and pipe were refilled with water. Pest threat were also checked by
the volunteers.
Children’s day observation
The children‟s day was observed by the unit by visiting the Anganavadi at Thalappuzha.
Sweets were distributed among the children. Various competitions and games were conducted for the
children. It provided a new experience to both our volunteers and the children.
Agriculture activities
Theroutine check up of vegetable plants were done by the volunteers. The plants were
watered and those need support were given. The bottles and pipe were refilled with water. Pest threat
were also checked by the volunteers. Coir net preparation for pea plants started.
World AIDS Rally
The world AIDS day was observed by the unit by joining the District level rally conducted by
health department at Mananthavadi. The rally was flagged of by Municipal chairman
Sri.V.K.Prabheesh. The seminar was inaugurated by P K asmath, District Panchayath Vice president.
Orientation Class
An orientation session for the existing volunteers were conducted. The Programme Officer
Mr. Abid Tharavattath described about the various activities of NSS and the activities to be carried
out in campus in coming days. The volunteers were given a broad idea about the annual 7 day special
camp also.
Chennai Relief Collection
When the Tamilnadu state capital flooded and the people were terribly suffered , the NSS unit
decided to give aid to the victims. As the initial step, as per the direction from state NSS cell a fund
collection was carried out in the campus. An amount of Rs 6040/- was paid to PC‟s account.
Energy Conservation Day
The National Energy Conservation Day was observed by the unit conducting many programs.
The energy conservation pledge was lead by the volunteer secretary Mr. Fawas K M and volunteers
took the pledge. A poster making competition was conducted for the first year students. The
exhibition posters were also conducted.
Three Day Orientation Camp
A three day orientation camp for the first year students were conducted from 15/12/2015 to
17/12/2015. The camp aimed to introduce the various activities of NSS , the opportunities in NSS and
the essentiality of team work. The day time camp was enjoyed by all the camp participants due to its
variety activities rather than sitting in the class rooms.
Vegetable Harvesting
The vegetable farming on terrace was successful and most of the ladies finger plants were
fruited. Hence it was decided to take the prime products for the seven day annual camp 2015.
Principal Dr.V.S. Anitha inaugurated the harvesting in presence of the PTA president Sri. Kannoli
Muhammed and vice president Sri. C. Anilkumar.
Annual Seven Day Special Camp (18/12/2015 to 25/12/2015)
The Annual Seven Day special Camp of the unit started at 2PM with registration of camp
participants. Programme Officer Sri. Abid Tharavattath gave instructions of the camp and the rules
and regulations to be followed. Following this the ice breaking session was held.
The camp was inaugurated by the PTA president Sri.Kannoli Muhammed in presence of the
Principal Dr.V.S. Anitha and PTA vice president Sri.C.Anil Kumar.As per the camp motto “Nalekkay
Mnnorukkam” a session by Kerala Suchithwa Mission was held. KSM Wayanad district co-ordinator
Sri.Anoop lead the session. Education sessions on „Personality Development‟ by personality trainer
Mr.Sunil M.S , „Opportunities in NSS‟ by Sulfeekar Ali (NACT convener), „Drug Abuse‟ by
Sri.Mathew , Asst Sub Inspector , Mananthavady etc were also held in various days.
Various activities were conducted during the camp period. As part of the camp the staff
quarters and premises were cleaned for making a vegetable garden. The saplings planted in last year
were “found out” through this cleaning and were given protection for further growth. The wick
irrigation project going on in the campus was reviewed by the volunteers. The existing terrace
farming was renovated by the volunteers as per this review. It was observed that the waste
management system is not properly working in many houses . Hence a survey of waste management
was conducted among the neighbouring people.
The main work of the camp was the Data Entry process of Energy Conservation Survey of
Malappuram District. The survey conducted in Malappuram district was a pilot project in association
with KSEB. NSS volunteers from different cells were engaged to collect the data. The data entry
process was given to NSS technical cell units in different districts. About 3000 data were entered
online by the camp members during our camp days.
The camp was visited by different personalities. Sri.Samba Siva Rao IAS , Sub collector
Mananthavadi was the one among them. He interacted with the students very feely and volunteers
cleared their doubts about civil service examination preparation . The state Programme Co-ordinator
Sri. Abdul Jabbar Ahammed also visited the camp. He also motivated the students to do more
activities and there by to become one of the proud units of India under the Indira Gandhi NSS
National Award winning Programme Officer Mr.Abid Tharavattath.
There was cultural programs of the students in all days to stage the talents of our volunteers.
A wonderful X‟mas carol was also conducted by the camp members on the X‟mas eve. Almost all the
houses near the college was visited by the students as part of carol under the leadership of Christamas
Papa.
A field visit to Kuruva Island was also conducted as part of the camp. Volunteers relaxed
from their routine works and activities and enjoyed the camp days by playing different games at
Kruva Island.
SHOTS FROM ANNUAL SPECIAL CAMP 2015
Annual 7Day Camp Evaluation
The evaluation of the camp and its activities were conducted immediately after re opening of
the college. All the participants remarked it as a wonderful experience. The activities and group living
outside the home and hostel realised a lot of things to be followed in life. Most of the participants
were first time and they remarked their change in ability of staging a program.
New Year Celebration
Since there was no students union in force NSS was entrusted to celebrate the new year in the
campus. NSS celebrated the new year with the participation of whole staff and students of the college.
Principal Dr.V.S.Anitha cut the cake in presence of department heads. The NSS dress bank also was
launched on the same day. Some funny games and cultural activities also was conducted.
Waste Management Survey
A waste management survey was conducted in the adopted village Godavary Colony in
association with the Paristhithikam 2015 project of Kerala State Climate change & Environment
department. Volunteer secretaries Fawas K M and Sreeshna C lead the survey.
Energy Conservation Survey Data Entry
The data entry work of the energy conservation survey conducted in Malappuram district was
carried out by our volunteers. About 5000 consumers data was uploaded to the prescribed site
Vegetable Garden Caring works
The roof top vegetable garden was cared by the volunteers in a routine way. The pea plants
were grown to yield products and ladies fingers were also to cut. Volunteers plucked the vegetables
and handed over to principal Dr. V S. Anitha as a token of love and support towards our activities.
Dress collection to Dress Bank
Through the survey conducted in adopted village Godavary tribal colony we realised that
many people need dress for their daily use. Hence in new year day the dress bank under NSS was
launched and begane to collect dress from staff and students. A mass collection was conducted in
campus in two days.
National Voters Day Observation
The National Voters day was observed by the unit with all its dignity. Programme Officer Sri.
Abid Tharavattath explained the necessity of the observation of this day. Volunteer secretary
Mr.Fawas K M lead the pledge and the volunteers took the pledge unanimously.
Republic Day Celebration
The 67th Republic Day of the country was celebrated by the unit auspiciously. Principal in
charge Dr.C.Sreekumar hoisted the National flag and delivered the message. Accounts officer
Sri,Chandrakumar K K , Programme Officer Sri. Abid Tharavattath and volunteer secretary Mr.Favas
K addressed the gathering. It was very successful in terms of students and staff participation.
NSS Orientation Camp
A one day orientation camp for all the volunteers was conducted in the college. Street play
training on various social issues , elocution on various current issues , patriotic songs competition etc
were conducted. Programme officer Sri.Abid Tharavattath , RRC co-ordinator Sri.V.Krishnaprasad ,
and Mr.Favas K M lead the camp. Smt.Jyothi T addressed the students.
“Snehapoorvvam Sahapadikk”
The Kerala Social Security Mission introduced a new project to help the financially backward
students by rising a fund through students. As per the direction from authorities our NSS unit also
conducted a fund rising programme in the campus. An amount of Rs 14140/- ( Rupees Fourteen
Thousand One Hundred and Forty Only) was collected and paid to the respective authority.
HIV Positive Speaking
In association with the Red Ribbon Club of the college the unit organised an HIV awareness
class for the whole students of the college. Smt. Thresia K J , a native of Thavinjal Gramapanchayath
delivered the positive speech in which she explained her struggles to live in this society.
“Visha Rahitha Vishu “ – Organic Farming Class
As part of promoting the organic farming among students and public we introduced a slogan
“Visha Rahitha Vishu “ under the Paristhithikam project funded by Kerala State Environment &
Climate Change. A class on organic farming was took by Sri.K.Raveendran Nair , Panamaram.
State Camp Experience Sharing
A meeting of the unit was called for sharing the experiences of various state camps attended
by our volunteers. It also discussed the recently coming programs like GENSIS inter district
workshop , Natural Camp at Tholpetty, National Integration Camp and N-DART state level
workshop that we are going to host.
N-EYES - Seeding the Vegetables
As part of “Visha Rahitha Vishu" organic farming unit conducted an additional skill
development program of preparing the seeds. Volunteers were trained about putting seed in trays for
growing and grow bag filling methods.The ingradients to be added were also taught.Sri.K.Raveendran
Nair , Panamaram lead the session.
Farewell to NI Camp Participant
In the history of NSS GEC Wayanad unit one of its volunteer got selection for a National
level Camp . Kumari Sreeshna C was selected for attending the National Integration Camp at
Belagavi , Karnataka along with Kerala contingents from various other colleges . The unit gave her a
warm sent off and wished the best performance in the camp.
Campus Cleaning
The main premises of the campus was cleaned by NSS volunteers on account of the
forthcoming technical fest and the state level N-DART workshop. The plastic wastes were removed
separately and existing points of waste burning were re located.
Nature Camp – 19th
to 21st February 2016
A nature camp was allotted by Forest and Wildlife department of Kerala for the selected NSS
volunteers from our college. The camp was at Begoor of Tholpetty range in Wayanad Wildlife
Sanctuary. There were classes about forest and a trucking through the forest. Asst Forest Officer
Sri.Baijunadh and beat forest officer Sri. Noufal lead the camp activities. The camp was a new
experience to majority.
Well Cleaning in Tribal Colony
On the last day of the nature camp all the members decided to do some social activity and
discussed the same with Asst Forest Officer Sri,Baijunadh. The nearby Kollimoola tribal colony
members were suffering from water scarcity and as part of water conservation activity it was decided
to clean and deepen their well. Four concrete rings were additionally laid in the well.Volunteers
visited the colony and carried out the work with the help of forest department authorities. Even girls
were also dared to get down into the well to clean the mud. Volunteers also conducted programs for
the children of the colony.
Street Play on Gender Equality
As part of the GENSIS project volunteers organised street plays in the campus on 24th
February and at near by places like Thalappuzha town , Kuzhinilam , Mananthavadi Gandhi Park and
Bus stand on 27th February. The street play promoting gender equality was widely appreciated by the
common public. The play was written and directed by the NSS volunteer Abdul Vasih K A
N-EYES - Potting Mixture preparation
As part of organic farming promotion through supply of filled grow bags to nearby houses ,
the volunteers made the potting mixture by mixing soil , cowdung , supermeal and an organic soil
nutrient. The prepared mixture is to be filled in grow bags and to be supplied to near by houses.
“Thiruth” – Manuscript
The first trimonthly manuscript of the college NSS unit named “Thiruth” was published by
NSS Technical Cell State Programme Co-ordinator Sri.Abdul Jabbar Ahammed. The artistic output of
the volunteers and other students in the manuscript was widely appreciated by the PTA president and
Principal.
“Adukkalaththottam”
In order to aware the common people about organic farming and importance of poison less
vegetables the unit introduced “Adukkalathottam” in 20 houses near the college with 5 growbags each
under the “Harithasree” project of the unit.
Checkdam construction
The college needs about 20000 litres of water per day for its normal function. The reliable
source for this need is the river flowing nearby which also get dry in summer. As per the direction
from the college authorities the unit started constructing a temporary checkdam for catering the
immediate water needs of the college.
State/National Level Camps Participation
1.Young Energy Auditors Camp – 22nd to 24th January 2016
A state level workshop for training volunteers as energy auditors was held at M A College of
Engineering , Kothamanagalam, Eranakulam. Municipal Chairperson Smt.Manju Siju inaugurated the
workshop. Mr. Binshid Ummer , S4 EEE and Kumari Manjusha N P , S4 ECE represented our college
in the workshop.
2. GENSIS State Level Workshop – 29th to 31st January
A state level workshop GENSIS was conducted by NSS Technical Cell in association with
the Social Justice Directorate of Kerala on gender equality at KMCT Women‟s Engineering College
Kozhikode. Mr. Abdul Vasih K A and Henna Varghese represented our unit in the workshop along
with the programme officer cum GENSIS project in charge Sri.Abid Tharavattath.Due to the overall
performance Abdul Vasih was selected as the GENSIS student co-ordinator of Wayanad District.
3.GENSIS Inter District Camp – 13th & 14th Feb 2016
An inter district camp on gender equality – GENSIS was held at Govt. Polytechnic College ,
Thottada , Kannur. Ten volunteers from the unit attended the camp along with programme officer and
GENSIS Wayanad district co-ordinator Abdul Vasih K A. Members of the team got appreciation in
various activities.
4. National Integration Camp - 23/2/16 to 29/2/2016
For first time in the history of NSS GEC Wayanad Kumari Sreeshna C attended the
National Integration Camp at Belagavi , Karnataka along with Kerala contingents from various other
colleges .The team performed very well in the camp
5. N-DART State Level Workshop 4th to 6th March 2016
The prestigious N-DART workshop jointly conducted by NSS Technical cell and Directorate
of Youth Affairs was conducted at our college. Principal Dr.V.S.Anitha inaugurated the camp in
presence of state programme co-ordinator Sri.Abdul Jabbar Ahammed and other dignitaries.
Volunteers from Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Wayanad were participated in the workshop.
Academy for Mountaneering and Adventure Sports (AMAS) Thiruvananthapuram was training team.
The rope items were carried out at Pazhassi Park and spot items in college campus. All the volunteers
enjoyed the camp and was a new experience to new bees of our college.
6. GENSIS Mega Event – 7th and 8th March 2016
The closing ceremony of the GENSIS project was held at LBS Institute of Technology for
Women , Thiruvananthapuram. There was a pledge against parity as part of Women‟s day observation
at Manaveeyam Veedhi on midnight of 7/2/2016. Our street play team won the second prize in
Street play contest and Abdul Vasih K A became the best performer .
7. Volunteer Secretaries Meet – 23rd to 25th March
The state level volunteer secretaries meet was held at PRS College of Engineering ,
Neyyatinkara , Thiruvananthapuram. The volunteer secretaries of the unit Mr. Favas K M and Kumari
Chithra J represented the unit in the meet.
Some News Reports
Conclusion
National Service Scheme is a social movement of students. So its main field of activity is the
society itself. All the programs conducted by this team will be related to society in some manner.
Since the organisers are a group of students they will need support from many individuals ,
institutions , associations and other similar bodies who render their service to society. During the year
2015-16 we had got a lot of support from various nook and corner of the society. We express our
