ObjectivesThisreportpresentsperiodlifetablesbyage, race, and sex for the United States based on agespecific death rates in2005.The tables presented are based on a newly revised method ology. For comparability, all life tables from the year 2000 forwardhave been reestimated using the revised methodology and arepresented in the TechnicalNotessection.

MethodsDatausedtopreparethe2005lifetablesare2005finalmortalitystatistics,July1,2005populationestimatesbasedonthe2000decennial census, and 2005 Medicare data for ages 66100. Themethodsusedtoestimatemortalityforages065werethesameasthose used in annual life tables from 1997 through 2004 (1). Themethodologytoestimatemortalityforthepopulationaged66andoverwasrevisedinthreeways:Medicaredatawereusedtosupplementvitalstatisticsandcensusdatastartingatage66rather than85,aswasdonefrom1997through2004;probabilitiesofdeathbasedoncurrentMedicare data rather than rates of change of probabilities of deathbasedonnoncurrentMedicaredatawereused;andthesmoothingandextrapolationoftheprobabilitiesofdeathforages66andoverwereperformedusinganonlinearleastsquaresmodelratherthanalinearmodeloftherateofchangeoftheprobabilitiesofdeathforages85andover(13).

ResultsIn2005,theoverallexpectationoflifeatbirthwas77.4years,representingadeclineof0.1yearsfromlifeexpectancyin2004.From 2004 to 2005, life expectancy at birth remained the same formales(74.9),females(79.9),thewhitepopulation(77.9),whitemales(75.4), white females (80.4), the black population (72.8), and blackmales(69.3).Lifeexpectancyatbirthincreasedforblackfemales(from76.0to76.1).Lifeexpectancyestimatesbasedontherevisedmeth odologyareslightlylowerthanthosebasedonthepreviousmethod ology. For 2005, life expectancy at birth based on the revisedmethodologywas lowerby0.4years for the totalpopulation. Keywords: lifeexpectancycsurvivalcdeath ratescrace

IntroductionThere are two types of life tablesthe cohort (or generation)

andtheperiod(orcurrent).Thecohortlifetablepresentsthemortalityexperience of a particular birth cohort, all persons born in the year1900, for example, from the moment of birth through consecutiveages in successive calendar years. Based on agespecific deathrates observed through consecutive calendar years, the cohort lifetable reflects themortalityexperienceofanactualcohort frombirthuntilno livesremain in thegroup.Toprepare justasinglecompletecohort life table requires data over many years. It is usually notfeasible to construct cohort life tables entirely on the basis ofobserved data for real cohorts due to data unavailability or incom pleteness(4).Forexample,alifetablerepresentationofthemortalityexperienceofacohortofpersonsbornin1970wouldrequiretheuseofdataprojectiontechniquestoestimatedeathsintothefuture(5,6).

Unlikethecohortlifetable, theperiodlifetabledoesnotrepresentthemortalityexperienceofanactualbirthcohort.Rather, theperiodlifetablepresentswhatwouldhappentoahypothetical(orsynthetic)cohortifitexperiencedthroughoutitsentirelifethemortalityconditionsofaparticulartimeperiod.Thus,forexample,aperiodlifetablefor2005assumes a hypothetical cohort subject throughout its lifetime to theagespecificdeathratesprevailing for theactualpopulation in2005.Theperiodlifetablemaythusbecharacterizedasrenderingasnap shotofcurrentmortalityexperience, andshowsthelongrangeimpli cationsofasetofagespecificdeath rates thatprevailed inagivenyear.Inthisreportthetermlifetablerefersonlytotheperiodlifetableandnot to thecohort life table.

Tables19showcomplete life tablesby race (whiteandblack)and sex for 2005. TablesA and B summarize life expectancy andsurvival by age, race, and sex. Life expectancy at birth for 2005representstheaveragenumberofyearsthatagroupofinfantswouldlive if the infantswere toexperience throughout life theagespecificdeath ratesprevailing in2005. In2005, lifeexpectancyatbirthwas77.4 years, decreasing by 0.1 years from 77.5 years in 2004. Thisdecrease is not typical of the average annual changes that haveoccurredduringthe last30years,but it isnotuncommoneitherandis mainly due to random variation from one year to the next.Throughout the past century, the trend in U.S. life expectancy wasone of gradual improvement and this trend has continued into thenewcentury (12).

Thedifferenceinlifeexpectancybetweenthesexeswas5.0yearsin2005,which isthesameas that in2004.From1900to1975,thedifference in life expectancy between the sexes increased from 2.0yearsto7.8years.Theincreasinggapduringtheseyearsisattributedtoincreasesinmalemortalityduetoischemicheartdiseaseandlungcancer,bothofwhichincreasedlargelyastheresultofmensearlyandwidespread adoption of cigarette smoking (14,15). Since 1979, thedifferenceinlifeexpectancybetweenthesexeshasnarrowedfrom7.8yearsto5.0years,reflectingproportionatelygreaterincreasesinlungcancer mortality for women than for men and proportionately largerdecreases inheartdiseasemortalityamongmen(14,15).

males(69.3years).From2004to2005,lifeexpectancyincreased0.1years for black females (from 76.0 in 2004 to 76.1 in 2005). Lifeexpectancy remained at 69.3 years for black males. Black malesexperiencedanunprecedenteddecline in lifeexpectancyeveryyearfor the period 19841989 (16), but annual increases in the years19901992and19942004.Lifeexpectancyin2005forwhitemales(75.4years)andwhitefemales(80.4years)didnotchangefrom2004.Overall,gainsinlifeexpectancybetween1980and2005were5.5yearsforblackmales,4.7yearsforwhitemales,3.6yearsforblackfemales,and2.3years forwhite females(Table12).

    Effectsofrevisionof life tablemethodologyonlifeexpectancy

The revised methodology employed to estimate the 2005 lifetables presented in this report resulted in lower estimates of lifeexpectancyatbirthandallotheragesforallgroupsincomparisontolife expectancy estimates based on the previous methodology usedby theCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventions(CDC)NationalCenter for Health Statistics (NCHS) (1). TableC presents a com parison of life expectancy based on both the previous and newlyrevised methodology for selected ages. Life expectancy at birthbased on the revised methodology was lower by 0.4 years for thetotalpopulation,0.3yearsformales,0.5yearsforfemales,0.4yearsforthewhitepopulation,0.3yearsforwhitemales,0.4yearsforwhitefemales,0.4yearsfortheblackpopulation,0.2yearsforblackmales,and0.4years forblack females.Similarly, lifeexpectancybasedontherevisedmethodologywas lower inabsolute termsandbysimilarmagnitudesatages65,85,and100andover. Inrelative terms, thepercentage change in life expectancy between the previous andrevised methods was greatest for the oldest age groups, especiallyages 100 and over. For example, for the total population thepercentage change in life expectancy at age 100 and over was15percent in comparison to 0.5percent at birth. Similar differenceswere seen for all other groups (TableC). The same patterns wereobserved in all years for which the life tables were revised (seeAppendix).
