j’Amey Bevan

A system built on collaboration and strategyBy: j’Amey Bevan- Chair, Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry TrainingAlberta’s apprenticeship and industry training system is developed with industry, for industry. All system stakeholders-government, industry and educators-work collaboratively to develop a highly skilled, educated and competitive trades workforce, for both current and future industry demand. Although current economic conditions have had a significant impact on the trades, both in Alberta and nationally, we are working strategically to ensure we will have a competent future workforce. In addition to the challenges facing apprentices and employers as a result of the recent economic downturn, we are mindful that a large segment of the current workforce is rapidly approaching retirement. We risk losing decades of knowledge, skills and experience when these trades professionals retire. Apprenticeship and industry training stakeholders, including industry and training providers, all have a vital role in overcoming these challenges by respectively attracting, hiring, training and mentoring apprentices. Only by working together can we ensure the future success of our skilled trades community.

BIOGRAPHY j’Amey Bevan: For over 19 years Ms.Bevan has worked in the industrial construction and maintenance industry. She holds a trade certificate with an Interprovincial Standards Red Seal endorsement in the Boilermaker trade, an Achievement in Business Competencies Program (Blue Seal) certificate and a Masters degree of Arts in Leadership through Royal Roads University. j’Amey Bevan began her term as Chair of the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board in May 2016. She was the Director of the Boilermaker Training Trust funds for many years and has served on multiple boards and committees to enhance and advocate for continuous learning, supportive work environments and trade mastery. Ms. Bevan recognizes that apprenticeship is the foundation on which many careers and economic stability is built and therefore it is there that she has chosen to direct the bulk of her passion and dedication.

Development and use of mathematical tools to model arc welding By: Adrian P. Gerlich- Associate Professor, University of WaterlooFor several decades, one of the major demands has been the need to develop welding procedure specifications for a vast range of joint designs and materials required in various industries. In order to address this, many standards have been published with pre-qualified weld procedure specifications, however there still remains a need for welding engineers to develop new procedures. Sometimes these can be modified from previous experiences on similar joints, although this may not be possible for a new welding engineer. Instead, these procedures are often developed through costly trial and error. This presentation will review the development of a wide range of mathematical tools that are available to help guide welding procedure design to determine a suitable window of parameters, ranging from fundamental Rosenthal theory through to high fidelity numerical modeling and mobile apps. The limitations and requirements to using these tools both for education, and in the field will be discussed.

BIOGRAPHY Adrian P. Gerlich: Adrian Gerlich obtained his BASc and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. His thesis focused on Friction Stir welding, and involved determining the underlying mechanisms during weld formation, and characterization of microstructures using electron microscopy. He took up a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta at the end of 2007 shortly after completing his PhD, and focused on research related to Friction Stir welding, wear resistant overlay welding, and accumulative roll bonding. He has been an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo since 2012, and to date has published over 40 journal papers, and 20 conference papers.

Patricio Mendez

Science of the Welding Arc By: Patricio Mendez- Weldco and Industry Chair in Welding and Joining; and Director of Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining, University of Alberta

This presentation will discuss the laws of nature governing of two very familiar welding parameters: Voltage and Current. What we call “Voltage” during weld-ing is in reality the combination of many voltages. Voltage loss is not proportional through the arc, with the largest fraction of voltage drop concentrated at the electrode surface and the plate surface. Understanding these voltages will help answer the questions such as “why DCEP in GTAW can melt the tungsten?”, “why AC can result in higher deposition rate in SAW and GMAW?”, “how does polarity affect penetration?”, “why 6010 works with DCEP and 6011 with AC?”

BIOGRAPHY Patricio Mendez: Prof Mendez’s teachings and research focus on physics and mathematics of welding and materials processing, including heat transfer, magnetohydrodynamics, arc plasma, thermodynamics, and kinetics. Applications include wear protection for mining, and oil extraction, alloy development, procedure development, new welding processes such as laser cladding, casting, solidification, and direct metal additive manufacturing using semi-solid processing. Before joining the University of Alberta in January 2009, he taught and researched at the Colorado School of Mines. Before that, he was a consulting engineer at Exponent Inc. In 1995 Dr. Mendez co-founded Semi-Solid Technologies Inc. in Cambridge, MA. Prof. Mendez holds a Ph.D. and a M.S. degree in Materials Engineering MIT, and a Mechanical Engineer degree from the University of Buenos Aires.

Tran Mah-Paulson

Maintaining our Pipeline Infrastructure By: Tran Mah-Paulson, President and CEO, Young Pipeliners Association of Canada (YPAC)

Pipelines are significant to Canada for ensuring our secure energy and economic needs, but we must ensure we protect the environment by keeping the product in the pipe. Over time, pipelines may require either repair or maintenance because of factors such as third party damage or corrosion to prevent leaks and improve pipeline reliability. Repair of in-service pipelines, potentially transporting hazardous products, using welding is a unique field that requires a good technical understanding of welding and materials, along with highly qualified welders who are up for the challenge. When done right, it can be rewarding – when done wrong, it can be devastating.

BIOGRAPHY Tran Mah-Paulson: Tran Mah-Paulson is a senior welding engineer with T.D. Williamson, in Edmonton, Alberta, where he has been involved in the global development of the company’s welding services program throughout the world. He is also involved with the development of welding procedures and the qualification of welders, with a specialty in maintenance and repair welding. He is an ABSA Welding Examiner, a CWB Level II Inspector, a PMI Project Management Professional, and an APEGA Professional Engineer. Involved with the Pipeline Research Council International, Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA), CEPA Foundation, Canadian Gas Association, and Canadian Standards Association Group, Tran is an avid pipeliner. The president of the Young Pipeliners Association of Canada (YPAC), Mah-Paulson is a member of the ASME Pipeline Systems Division Extended Executive Committee and a past member of the American Welding Society – Alberta Section. He received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Alberta.

Stringers vs. Weave: The effect of heat input on properties and why you should care about the heat affected zoneBy: Stephen Kenny- Metallurgy Instructor, SAIT

Some inspectors require stringers, while others require weave. Some technical documents, such as the B-pressure syllabus, have made a change to allow the cap pass to be either stringer or weave where only weave was permitted before. Why was that change made? Does it really matter which technique you use? Yes. There are many reasons why a welder might choose one or the other, includ-ing position, size of the weld bead or increased productivity, but one aspect that is less well understood is the impact on mechanical properties such as strength and ductility. This presentation will look at the mechanical property differences be-tween stringer and weave beads, when and why you might choose one over the other depending on your requirements, and will include a brief look into the weld and heat affected zone microstructure to explain the differences between the two techniques. welders from Golden Star Gold Mine in a variety of processes.

BIOGRAPHY Stephen Kenny: Stephen Kenny, P. Eng. holds a B.Sc. in Materials Engineering from the University of Alberta. His primary experience comes from working as the Welding Research Engineer for EVRAZ North America where he oversaw the development of improved welding techniques for pipeline welding, as well as assisting EVRAZ mills with weld failure analysis and quality assurance. Stephen now works as a Metallurgy Instructor in the Welding Engineering Technology (WET) program at SAIT.

Welding Procedure Fundamentals - What do students need to know?By: Josh Brewster, Academic Chair- Welding Engineering Technology/Non-Destructive Testing, SAITWelding is used every day to manufacture critical products such as pressure vessels, piping, and pipelines. Welded components that do not meet technical requirements are expensive, time consuming, and potentially dangerous. In order to control welding as a manufacturing process, welding procedures are used to prescribe and limit specific variables that will ultimately affect the welded product in-service. Welding procedures must also address all of the specific requirements of the applicable construction Code or Standard. Unfortunately, the abundance of technical information present on welding procedures often creates uncertainty and confusion for welders. This presentation is de-signed to provide an overview of the structure, purpose, qualification, and use of a welding procedure. There will be a strong emphasis on communication between the technical personnel responsible for writing and qualifying the welding procedure, and the welders responsible for applying the welding process during manufacturing.

BIOGRAPHY Josh Brewster: Josh Brewster, CET, RSE is a licensed Pressure Welder, Welding Inspector, Welding Examiner, In-Service Pressure Vessel Inspector, and Welding Engineering Technologist with over nine years of experience in the field of welding. Josh was an instructor within the Welding Engineering Technology Program at SAIT, where he taught Codes and Standards, Robotics, Pressure Vessel Construction, and Failure Mitigation. He is now the Academic Chair of both the Welding Engineering Technology and Non-Destructive Testing Programs at SAIT.

The Rise of Additive Manufacturing in Alberta: Encouraging Unconventional SolutionsBy: Tonya Wolfe, PhD PEng- Senior Metallurgical Engineer, InnoTech AlbertaAdditive manufacturing (AM) is a process whereby a component is built up layer by layer from a digital 3D drawing, and is commonly known as 3D printing. Although additive manufacturing has been around for some time, the proliferation of the “do-it-yourself maker craze” has made 3D printing a tool readily accessible by all. In order to accelerate and facilitate innovation in design and manufacturing here in Alberta, an industrial manufacturing demonstration facility is required. The initiative is centered around supporting local companies in evaluating AM processes for their manufacturing applications. Initial focus will be on industrial manufacturing for theresource industry and will then branch out to other sectors as dictated by industry. The end goal is to house 8-10 3D printers (including a PTA system and robotic welding system adapted for AM) and support companies from concept stage through to post processing and testing. A major component of the initiative is to support skilled labour development in the province to ensure the successful long-term adoption of AM. Therefore, InnoTech Alberta will work in close collaboration with post-secondary institutions to ensure effective mechanisms are be in place for post-secondary students to gain hands-on experience with AM processes and equipment.

BIOGRAPHY Tonya Wolfe: Dr Tonya Wolfe is a senior metallurgical engineer at InnoTech Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Her areas of expertise include welding of overlays, wear resistant materials, metallurgical characterization, process design, and infrared thermography. Pressure Welding Regulations – a review of the past and a look-ahead to the future By: Matthew Yarmuch- President, MattCo Engineering Solutions Inc. For the past several years, various industry and government committees have collaborated to modernize and streamline requirements for the training and certification of welders in Alberta. In 2014, the Alberta Apprenticeship course outline for the Welder and Wire Process Operator trades was modernized to emphasize training for both wire-feed processes and manual welding. In parallel, the Pressure Welders Regulation was amended to address various industry concerns regarding the certification of pressure welders, welding examiners and associated trades (such as ‘fitters’) involved in pressure equipment fabrication. The regula-tion enhancements affected the certification processes for Grade B and C welders, including apprentice welders, and also introduced the Pressure Tack Welder and Welding Examiner in Training certification programs. A new review cycle of the regulations has been initiated, and new options for the regulations of welders are under discussion. The paper will review these past changes and discuss potential changes in the future.
