SCRIP REMINDER

SCRIP puts your regular shopping dollars to work supporting your parish and school with over fifty retailers ….. grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, movie theaters, spas and more!

SCRIP cards are available for purchase in the school office and after Mass twice per month ….. next up, the weekend of November 3rd/4th and 17th/18th.

Thank you for supporting your parish and school!

Veterans Day is Next Sunday: Each year our nation commemorates Veterans’ Day, and this year it lands on a Sunday. This day marks the armistice signed between the Allies (Britain, France, and the US) and Germany, signaling the end of World War I. In our nation, this day was set aside to honor military veterans of all wars, not just World War I. This year is a special occasion because next Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of the “war to end all wars.” To mark the occasion, our parish will hold a ceremony just prior to the beginning of the 8:30 AM Mass. There will be men in our parish who served in the military that will be present. We will honor them, the 91 men who served in World War I from our parish, and all who have served our country. The last time this happened was during the anniversary year of the parish – November 11, 2001. If you able to come to 8:30, consider coming at that time. Blessed Art Here Next Weekend: The organization, Blessed Art, will be at Nativity of Mary next weekend. Many of you may remember that their mission is not only to sell products of Christian merchants from the Holy Land, but also they remind us of the plight of our brothers and sisters in the faith in the Holy Land. The number of Christians is continually dwindling, and those Christians who remain need our financial and prayerful support. As having been to the Holy Land twice now, I can personally speak of the importance of supporting our fellow Christians. They are a needed presence, not just to keep the holy places going, but also to be a family of peace in a region ripped apart by war. Please consider supporting the Catholic community in the Holy Land by coming down to the Fellowship Hall after the Masses for refreshments and also to view (and maybe purchase) the beautiful religious articles. Saints Corner: Recently, someone won the Mega Millions lottery, which totaled over a 1 billion dollars. What would a person do with all that money? In the case of this week’s saint, he walked away from riches. St. Leonard of Noblac was born in the 6th century to a noble family in France. Leonard decided to become a hermit for Jesus. After a period of time, he went around the countryside preaching the Gospel to the people. Leonard became known for his holiness, miracles, and his work among prisoners. He encouraged those prisoners to truly reform their lives, and many of them did. His work, just like the work of St. Martin de Porres, shows that the Church wishes all to come to the heart of Jesus. Sainthood is a process, not a flash of lightning. The work of the Church is to bring people to Jesus, despite our weaknesses and shortcomings. That is why the Church was founded. Have a blessed week!

Next Ministry Schedule

We are in the process of building the next Ministry Schedule. The next schedule will go from 11/25/18thru 03/06/19.

Now is a great time to indicated any dates you are not available to minister, or if you would like to add or subtract a Ministry.

Please go to our Ministry Website to indicate your unavaila-bility or contact Bob in the Liturgy office at 752-7861.

Attention: Lectors The WORKBOOK for lectors is now available for the next liturgical year, in the church vestibule. As a gentle reminder; it is important that you prepare your reading carefully, so that you are not simply reading, but actually proclaiming the text. Being prayerful with the reading and “living with it” for several days in advance can help to familiarize you with the reading and make it your own. Thank you so much for being a part of this important ministry.

Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, 'He is One and there is no other than he.'" And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." - Mk 12:32, 34ab

************************************************************** "You are not far from the kingdom of God." What does it mean to be close to God's kingdom? In today's Gospel, Jesus is in a dialogue with teachers of the law. They know well the Law of Moses, with its complex codes, expectations, and punish-ments. What will Jesus say? "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength ... You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus effortlessly distills all the books of law into two commands. The simplicity of the Gospel message doesn't mean it's easy to follow. Far from it! The simplicity of the Gospel indicates its totality. Anything that requires the passions of our heart, the choice of our soul, the reason in our mind, or the strength of our body - all of this ought to be animated by love. As you can imagine, that means pretty much everything! The love of God and love of neighbor is meant to flow into our entire lives. The Gospel can appear complicated because life is complicat-ed. Not every outcast is easy to love. We lack the knowledge or compassion to heal everyone who suffers. Personal sacrifice is not always noticed or valued. In the face of the unknown, fear can be easier than faith. Life's circumstances can seem like obstacles to God's love, not opportunities. And yet Jesus' command still stands. As you reflect this week, examine those areas where it's easy to love. Thank God for them! But take some time to consider the people and circum-stances that challenge you. Ask God to show you what it means to love there. How is He inviting you to enlarge your heart, strengthen your soul, open your mind, and persevere in your strength? How is He inviting you to love?

The shortened days and early evenings of November invite us to seek light and warmth and open our hearts to reflection. Our second-Monday-of-the-month Taize’ Prayer experience will be on Monday, November 12 at 7:00 PM. As always, our time together will offer a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and refresh our spirits. Come and bask in the light of candles and the warmth of friendship, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, attend to God’s message in Scripture, and listen in silence for God’s voice in your heart.
