News & Notes

School News: Merry Christmas from St. Mary students and staff! We celebrated with Christmas programs as well as band and strings concerts! Thank you to everyone who showed up to watch our really fun programs. Throughout the Advent Season, the school community did a fantastic job raising items for our community including baby items, canned fruits and veggies, and pasta items. The middle school grades each adopted a family from ECHO and bought close to $1000 in gifts! Additionally, the school community helped raise hundreds of dollars in support of Isaac, who at age 3 was diagnosed with high risk Stage IV Neuroblasto-ma. Giving was certainly a part of the Advent Season this year.

SCRIP: Thank you so much to all our parishioners who help support our SCRIP program. In the recent masses we have been selling over $10,000 in product which results in hundreds of dollars coming back to the school. Your support is extremely appreciated! Thank you for making 2018 our most successful SCRIP year yet!

SCRIP REMINDER

SCRIP cards are available for purchase in the school office and after Mass twice per month ….. next up, the weekend of January 5th/6th and 19th/20th..

Thank you for supporting your parish and school!

A New Year’s Prayer

May God make your year a happy one! Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain, But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;

Not by making your path easy, But by making you sturdy to travel any path;

Not by taking hardships from you, But by taking fear from your heart;

Not by granting you unbroken sunshine, But by keeping your face bright,

even in the shadows; Not by making your life always pleasant,

But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,

and by making you anxious to be there to help. God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you

for the year ahead.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man. - Lk 2:51-52

************************************************************** "After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers." As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, this Gospel exposes us to a strange tension. While this family is one we can look to for an example, they are not quite the same family unit as everyone else. There is an otherness to Jesus, something profound. And yet, perhaps on second thought, are our families so different? When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in the temple, "they were astonished." But at what? Mary's response is surprised. They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching in a place for respected teachers. They're not astonished that their son has captured the attention of the wisest men of the time period. They're astonished at his seemingly disobedient behavior! "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." All our children have an "otherness" about them, something that makes them unique and different. They are distinctly not "me." What will our own children become? What temple will they wander off to? Who will they astound?

Would You Like A Pastoral Visit?

REMINDER: If you, a family member or someone you

know is confined or hospitalized and would benefit from a

pastoral visit, please contact your parish office and let them

know. Staff does not always know of hospital admissions for

a variety of reasons and often has no way of knowing of other

situations in which a parish contact would be beneficial.

Incense Alert! Incense will be used at the 4:30 and 10:30 Masses during Advent. As always, the 8:30 AM Sunday Mass is incense free. We will use incense through Sunday, January 6, which is the Epiphany of the Lord.

to all who made our Christmas services so special this year.

The entire decorating committee once again ensured the

church was beautiful. Their hard work and eye for detail

was apparent. All those who helped in ministry positions

during our liturgies; your service is appreciated.

The members of our Choirs were exceptional by presenting

lovely prelude music prior to the 6 pm Mass on Christmas

Eve and the 10 am Mass on Christmas Day. They then

wonderfully lead the congregation in song and prayer

during the service. They are an example of “true stewards

of Christ” to share so much of their time and talent with us.

Finally, it wouldn’t have been a St. Mary's Christmas

without our fantastic Young Voices choir. The kids worked

very hard and did a great job. A SPECIAL THANK YOU to

the choir’s fine director, Laura Schuler, and, pianist, Ann

Allen. And thanks to the parents who supported these fine

young men and women.

For today in the city of David a savior has been born for

you who is Christ and Lord.
