Dear Parents, Parish Members, Teachers and Staff, We hope that your first month back to school has been a productive one! The halls have been bustling. It’s been wonderful to welcome so many new faces and a joy to visit with all of our familiar friends too! As we look forward to facing new challenges, we are pleased to be tasked with growing the faith, talents, and academic excellence of each our students. The St. Mary School Board is an advisory body to the pastor and parish council whose purpose is the advancement of the mission and goals of St. Mary School. Membership on the school board consists of registered members of the parish, school staff as well as parents of students who attend St. Mary Parish School. Applications are approved by a simple majority of the present board members. The School Board is now accepting applications for the 2019-2022 term. We currently have three vacancies to fill. Our meetings are held in the conference room of the school office, one Tuesday of each month, the months of Septem-ber through May. Additional details will be determined once full membership is obtained and availability of each member determined. An application form is attached to this letter, and can also be accessed by visiting the school website - http://stmaryschoolwi.com/parent-resources/ We ask that all applications be completed online or returned to the school office by 10/18/2019. Applications will be discussed and voting will commence as of the October 22, 2019 meeting at 6 pm. We thank you in advance for your interest and enthusiasm, as we enter the 2019-2020 school year. Sincerely, The St. Mary School Board Fr. Robert Butz Jennifer Hussli Curtis Macek Dr. Kim Ehrhardt Dalila Jacque Dennis McDougall Lynsey Dostal (exiting) Jeremiah Johnson Seena Stelter

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'" - Lk 17:9-10

************************************************************ “When you have done all you have been commanded, say ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” The metaphor in the story could seem harsh to us today. A servant has worked hard all day, and rather than receiving a much-needed respite, the master commands an additional task. Jesus, however, is appearing to their sensibilities. This was a hierarchical society in which everyone had a place. His listeners would know this. No servant would presume a reward for good deeds.

It’s important to remember that we do have a place at God’s table. But we don’t “earn” it. Dining with the Lord at the heavenly wedding feast requires surrender. It requires deep faith in God and His promises. It also requires commitment. The kingdom takes work! There are fields to plow and initiatives to prepare. There are sheep to tend to and family to care for. There are people waiting for our yes to generous service. When we serve dinner at a homeless shelter, we are waiting on the table of Christ. When we visit an ill relative, we’re imitating the Good Samaritan. We’re visiting Jesus! We’re growing his kingdom of life and love.

The Gospel today reminds us to check our motives. Are we serving because we’re seeking a reward? Or because we have faith that this is who we’re meant to serve? That is, is this where we’re meant to be? The Gospel reminds us that this faith can do powerful things! “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” But, ultimately, we’re not the ones doing the deeds. We’re not the ones “earning” the grace. Faith, and the good we do for others, is a gift.

What’s Happening

As we settle into the comfort of fall routines, we look forward to a return to a “time apart” at St. Mary’s that is at once familiar and new. Our second-Monday-of-the-month Taize’ Prayer experience will be on Monday, October 14 at 7:00 PM. As always, our time together will offer a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and refresh our spirits. Come and bask in the light of candles, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, attend to God’s message in Scripture, and listen in silence for God’s voice.
