Chapel Candles-Week of June 24, 2018 Intentions of St. Veronica Baptism Committee
Today we celebrate the nativity of St. John the
Baptist. The circumstances of his conception are
also mysterious, but plausible since it occurred by
natural means unlike the Incarnation. John’s life in
the womb also shows us that the gift of life in the
womb is substantially active and is capable of
communicating with the outside world as seen
when Jesus, in His mother’s womb, caused St. John
to leap. Some Church Fathers felt that this is where
St. John became an adopted son of God and was
remitted of original sin.
St. John was rather forceful in getting his points
across. St. Bede the Venerable tells us St. John’s
persecutors had demanded not that he should deny
Christ, but only that he should keep silent about the
truth. The truth hurts and no one wants to face up
to it. We are slowly approaching a time when we
will not be arrested for saying the truth, but will be
sued for it.
As of last week we have collected $69,000 toward
our earmark air conditioner account. At this rate, it
will take about four years before we can afford a
new system. I think it is a safe bet that for each
year we wait, the cost for a new system will go up
about ten percent. I hope with the last repair we
will get another year out of the system. Should the
AC unexpectedly fail during the summer months, we
would have to have Mass in the gym. As I have
explained our systems are getting old and we have
been advised that the gym heat ex-changers are
also in need of replacement, which heat and cool
the gym, The cost is about 50,000.00. I regret that
I have to give you this bad news, but, this is your
parish and these are some of the things we are
faced with and working to address, as best as we
can.
This week we will be spending about $10,000 to fill
in the large pot holes and add two speed
bumps. This should make it a little safer for all and
the Religious Education children who meet during
the dark hours in the fall and winter. It should offer
a little more protection for our church goers and our
school children.
Fr. Euk
"First take the log out of your own eye"
Everybody is a critic, but nobody wants to be judged
or condemned. Then why is judgementalism so
rampant, even among Christians? "Thinking the
best of other people" is necessary if we wish to grow
in love. And kindliness in judgment is nothing less
that a sacred duty. The Rabbis warned people: "He
who judges his neighbor favorably will be judged fa-
vorably by God." How easy it is to misjudge and how
difficult it is to be impartial in judgment. Our judg-
ment of others is usually “off the mark” because we
can’t see inside the person, or we don’t have access
to all the facts, or we are swayed by instinct and un-
reasoning reactions to people. It is easier to find
fault in others than in oneself.
Jesus states a heavenly principle we can stake our
lives on: what you give to others (and how you treat
others) will return to you. The Lord knows our faults
and he sees all, even the imperfections and sins of
the heart which we cannot recognize in our-
selves. Like a gentle father and a skillful doctor he
patiently draws us to his seat of mercy and removes
the cancer of sin which inhabits our hearts. Do you
trust in God’s mercy and grace? Ask the Lord to
flood your heart with his loving-kindness and mercy
that you may only have room for charity and forbear-
ance towards your neighbor.
Please Note: There is no Healing Mass during the
Summer Months. The Next Healing Mass is sched-
uled for Friday, September 7th.
