Every Pope since the Second Vatican Council has taught that the mission and purpose of the Church is to evangelize, to spread the Good News as taught by Jesus Christ. Pope John Paul II issued a call for a New Evangelization directed especially but not exclusively to already baptized people who do not live the faith as Jesus and his apostles clearly laid it out in the scriptures. This call led to the development of numerous new movements, often spearheaded by the laity, to facilitate evangelization including Opus Dei, Cursillo, the Charismatic Renewal, Neo-Catechumenate, Christ Renews His Parish, and many others. The ALPHA Course was begun in England in the late Seventies but blossomed even more in the 1990’s in the Anglican Church. From there it has spread throughout the world and is being used as a tool for evangelization in various churches including the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Francis is positively disposed towards it along with many high placed leaders of the church including the editor of the Catholic Catechism, Cardinal Schoenborn of Vienna. The United States Bishops have featured it on their website as among the top ten tools for evangelization. There are ten sessions featuring 14 inspiring video presentations which focus on the absolutely basic teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Each session begins with a meal and concludes with conversations at table following each video. At St. Andrew’s the nearly four hundred people who have already taken the course have experienced a remarkable growth in their connection with Christ and his church. ALPHA is a Greek word which means beginning and is intended to be followed up by ongoing opportunities to deepen and increase one’s faith. ALPHA is open to anyone who has questions (even doubts) about the church for whom Jesus laid down his life on the cross. It is especially for people who have been hoping to find a way to make a new beginning in the way they live their faith. We will embark on our fourth ALPHA course on January 9th at 6:30pm in the Joyce Center. Bring a friend or other family member. See you there.

CHRISTMAS BASKETS DISTRIBUTED Families 142 Adults 349 Children 177

Last week during COFFEE & DONUTS, a member of our St. Vincent de Paul Team made it known to some of our parishioners that she was worried about a family that she had visited that week.

She told of a mom with three kids who had nothing, that is to say, almost nothing. No furniture, no way to pay all their bills, and her kids were all sleeping on the floor. After hearing the story, some of the parishioners took up a collection right there at the table. This got the ball rolling. Those same parishioners went and bought THREE BRAND NEW MATTRESSES. Way to go St. Andrew family, that is how you go from maintenance to mission.

Stewardship of Treasure

Sacrificial Giving With the New Year fast approaching it is time for each of us to renew our commitment to support the works of Christ and his Church through Sacrificial Giving. This approach to giving is distinguished from all others because it is inspired by Sacred Scripture. Did you know that Jesus addressed the topics of money, riches, and wealth more than any other topic? Yet, many Catholics think that “being truly spiritual” and “the use of money” are largely unrelated. Nothing could be further from the truth. Few things have led people down the path of spiritual ruin than their failure to exercise proper care of all of God gifts—materal and spiritual.

This year, we are asking you to first evaluate your giving to the church over this past year. Did you give too much? Could you have given more? Do you know what percentage of your income you are presently giving? After considering these questions, make a new decision as to what percentage you will direct towards the support of your parish and all its good works and put it into practice beginning New Year’s weekend or soon thereafter. If you haven’t been using sacrificial giving envelopes, please consider doing so as it will make you more accountable. If you have to be absent from church from time to time because of illness or travel or caring for a loved one, why not consider Online giving through our parish app or website. Or, how about automatic bank drafts. This may make you more faithful in your giving and provide you with a sense of having become a more faithful steward.

The Bottom Line: Let’s all do our best to make the primary motivation for our giving be our gratitude for all God gives to us. No one can ask for more than that.
