Follow me, said Jesus, and I willmake youfishers of men. Thatswhat our work as a church is allabout how we follow Jesus, andhow we share his grace with others, through evangelism and service.

Weve done a good job of those things at this church, Ibelieve. You can see some of our facts and figures forthe past year on page 7.

We do have both challenges and opportunities ahead. Ibelieve these fall into two broad categories.

First, we are in good shape financially. To ensure thatthis continues, we need to create a plan for long-termfinancial sustainability, including three parts:

We need to create a plan to pay down our debt on ourchurch building, which is now about $616,000.

We need to plan for future expansion of our sanctuaryand building out the upstairs in our current building.

We need to develop stewardship among our youngermembers in particular, ensuring that we are not tooheavily dependent on a few donors.

Senior Warden Emeritus Mark Dobbins has agreed tochair a committee to create this long-term financial plan.

Second, we have a gospel mandate to grow as Jesus said,we need to be fishers of men. We need to tell the good newsof Jesus to people in our community so that we can continueto grow. We need to make a plan for this growth, includingevangelism and marketing plans, and paying specialattention to leadership structures. At average Sundayattendance of around 200, we are at a size where churchesoften plateau or decline. To grow to the next size church,we need to act like the next size church, including:

Creating leadership structures that can sustain a largercongregation.

Building quality in our programs, which are a big partof the reason people join larger churches.

    Staffing for growth.

Continuing to improve our excellent newcomerwelcoming and incorporation systems.

Devising ways to identify members gifts and talentsand encourage them to exercise their gifts.

Finding strategies to create community byencouraging connections between members of thechurch.

Our vestry, other leaders, and members this year will beundergoing a learning and planning process to figure outhow to meet these challenges. It will be an exciting year atNativity!

    In Christ,Susan

Page 4 Waynes WorldThank you Nativity for making my

Ordination Service such a fun and

fulfilling experience. I am humbled by

the outpouring of your time, your

talents and your selves to make, not

only the service itself come off, but forthese last four years where you have

nurtured me and fed me all along the

    way.

You might not realize it but this 4-year mark for me at

Nativity far exceeds the time I spent as a Baptist minister in

southern Illinois (only 2 years and 2 months). We have

called ourselves a mission congregation that has grown to a

full-fledged and recognized church in the Diocese of

Arizona, but let us never lose sight of who we are as

pilgrims on a journey together. This journey is unfailingly

toward union with the Divine and everything we are doin

at Nativity contributes to make advances in that historic

trek. Ordinations are very clear that, although they may

signify the end of one thing (the reaching to grasp a

particular place), they most impactfully point toward the

beginning of something so much greater. Thank you forbeing in partnership with me as we go forward together. W

in the church all manifest a particular facet of the Divine

reality while at the same time our foibles remind us of ho

far we have to go. Let us celebrate both. Thank you agai

    and again and again.

The Adult Choir is seeking new

members! If you enjoy making musicin a group, being involved in aministry that brings a lot ofsatisfaction and is always visibleduring our worship, consider joining

us. We are a very energetic and fungroup of people who meet to rehearseevery Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Wehave exciting plans for this season -on Saturday, April 12th, we are going

to perform a piece called "Olivet to Calvary", anextremely dramatic and beautiful version of Christ'sPassion for soloists, woodwind quartet and choir. We arealso going to learn a variety of anthems from differentmusical traditions: from classical to gospel. If you areinterested in joining us, please come to any of ourrehearsals on Wednesdays, or talk to me after the service.

This month the Adult Choir is going to shine insome beautiful anthems: for the Presentation of Jesus inthe Temple Sunday we will sing Kenneth Nichols' versionof "Song of Simeon"; on the following Sundays you will

hear Gilbert Martin's "Lord, Lead Me, Lord" quoting thefamous hymn by Samuel Wesley; and Maurice Durufle's"Ubi caritas". These are wonderful pieces of contemporaryand classical Christian music that we are all excited toshare with you.

This month we are installing the humidity control

system in our grand piano - a necessity in the Arizonaclimate, completely invisible from the outside. It is vitalfor the piano to stay in tune, and a perfect way to preserveour wonderful new instrument!

Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 23rd at4 p.m.! Two wonderful musicians: Levon Zarasian, whoplays in the Phoenix Symphony violin section, and apianist Peter Gharibian, both of Armenian origin, willperform music by Kreisler, Mozart, Beethoven, andSarasate. Their new CD "Armenian Music Treasures" willbe available to purchase after the concert. This is going tobe a real treat, so don't forget to bring all your musicloving friends!

Pa g e 6 NATIV ITY FACTS A ND F IGU RES 201 3Here are some of the facts and figures Pastor Susan shared with the congregation at the annual meeting on

Jan. 26. Nativity has some things to be truly proud of!

Average Sunday attendance increased from 171 in 2012 to 208 in 2013, a 22% increase. Total pledges also increased by 22%. We had 15 baptisms and 7 confirmation/reception/reaffirmations. We increased our number of worship services each week from one to three. Music programs add

greatly to our worship services, with beautiful music from classical to jazz/gospel. In addition, a

number of fine concerts have allowed us to reach out to members of our community and invite them to

experience what Nativity has to offer. Childrens and Youth Ministries:

o 61 children from age 3 to grade 5 either registered for Sunday school or attended regularly

    without registering.

o 21 students registered for junior and senior high youth group; 9 students went on our Mission

Week 2013; 11 students are registered for Mission Trip 2014; 10 students are participating in

    teen confirmation class.

Adult Education programs are growing, including Wednesday night ABCDs of Faith, ChurchNext

online learning, Book Club, and Movie Night. Sunday morning Power Bible Study attendance has

swelled to about 20-25. We offer a number of after-school and summer community education programs for children and youth,

working with providers such as Desert Foothills Theater. We are also providing tutoring space for

teachers and students at Pinnacle Peak Elementary. Outreach and Community Service:

o We work with 18 different outreach programs in the Valley, in the

    United States, and internationally.

o We sent mission trips to Navajoland and to Veracruz, Mexico.

o We started an important new outreach project, Santa Maria FoodBank, in partnership with an Episcopal church on the west side of

    Phoenix.

o We gave significant amounts of money away to organizations

helping those in need, as well as to individuals in need of assistance. We supported Dr. Wayne Whitney through his ordination, first as a deacon,

then as a priest, in a terrific inspiring ordination service just last month!

Urgent - Our Soldiers Need Our Help

The mission for U.S. Troops in Afghanistan is ending next December. Because of the draw down of troops, thecommissaries and REC centers are already shutting down. Soldiers used to receive 3 hot meals per day, nowthey are getting MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). These backup field food packets have become their staple diet.Even basics, like socks, are rationed to two pairs a month. Our soldiers are in desperate need for basic suppliesnow more than ever. This has forced Packages from Home to change their holiday boxes. At Christmas timethey used to send extras, like Christmas lights and ornaments, but now they have cut the fluff and only aresending what the soldiers need to survive.

PfH has sent out an urgent request and we hope that Nativity members will answer the call. From this Sundayuntil Feb. 14th we will be collecting donations and specific items for immediate shipment to our soldiersoverseas.

    Snacks for Sunday School

Thank you to Ginny Myrick, Jen Goins, Kara Erickson and Kelly Alley for bringing the great kid friendly food for thechildren to eat while the Annual Meeting was taking place! We had a lovely time with all the kids while the adultstook care of business!

A reminder that although parents are usual volunteers to bring snack for the Sunday School, any parishioner whowould like to sign up for a Sunday is welcome! Our focus is to get the children directly from church into theclassrooms so that teachers have as much time possible with the children. Having a snack in the classroom inhibits adelayed start from children stopping at the hospitality table on their way to class! Additionally, we can then offer morehealthy options to the children.

    Snack schedule:

As the new year is getting underway, it seems a good time to remind everyone what our children and family formationoptions are and when they meet!

9:30 Children's Chapelis a church service specifically oriented for children ages 4 - 2nd grade. We followthe structure of the adult service using words that children can understand and study the Gospel being used in the Adultservice. Some times there are crafts or drama activities to reinforce the Gospel lesson and sometimes Ilona comes in toteach the children a new song to sing in Church! Children begin the service with their parents in the Sanctuary and afterthe invocation the celebrant calls the children up for a blessing. We meet at the front by the altar and one of the childrenwill carry a cross for the rest to follow to our chapel area. At the Peace, the children rejoin their families for communionand the rest of the service.
