There is no doubt about it, in recent years, terms such as “natural”, “plant-based”,“organic” and “vegetable” have become firmly established in our everyday vocabu-lary, most commonly in the Personal Care market. Evonik spotted this trend early on. More than 84 percent of our raw materials and active ingredients provided to the cos-metic industry are made from plant-sourced and natural starting materials. Examples are fats and oils, natural fatty acids or sugar compounds including sucrose and sorbitol considering a responsible use of resources with respect to sustainability and human foot requirements. Therefore Evonik Goldschmidt has developed several tech-nologies to ensure most effective use of

these important sources. The business unit Consumer Specialties produces the nature-identical ceramide and phytosphingosine active ingredient group, using biofermen-tation, processes and techniques, that con-serve resources and are safe and environ-mentally sound. Evonik also uses cutting-edge biotechnological production pro-cesses that use natural enzymes to produce high-quality ester oils, which can be used in a variety of cosmetic products. These processes reduce energy use and emissions by up to 75 percent and result in high-quality products having exceptional purity. Our natural, nature-identical or renewable raw materials, active ingredients and inno-vative, environmentally friendly production

processes, as well as the biodegradability of hair and body care products, has also been honored by independent institutions and organizations. For example, the fol-lowing 53 products of our portfolio for the cosmetic industry have already been certi-fied by Ecocert so far. Ecocert is a leading independent international environmental organization based in France. It is currently the largest environmental control and cer-tification organization in Europe and it works in 80 different countries all over the world. Ecocert follows ISO Guide 65 (EN 45011).
