Mayor’s messageWe are naturally unique

The Gold Coast is one of the most biodiverse places in Australia. We have an extensive range of unique and precious natural landscapes and wildlife habitats, from our hinterland ranges to our coasts and wetlands.

The NaturallyGC program encourages the local community and visitors alike to connect, conserve and explore our natural areas through more than 900 free and low cost nature-based activities and environmentally themed events.

There are many ways you can get involved: help plant native trees; become a citizen scientist and contribute to the monitoring of our waterways; go on a guided bushwalk and explore our conservation areas; learn about our flora and fauna; pick up tips for your home garden; immerse yourself in indigenous culture or get the kids into the green and away from the screens plus a whole lot more.

We recognise that our native wildlife and natural landscapes are a critical asset, essential to the future environmental, social and economic sustainability of the Gold Coast.

Explore how we are working to protect these areas and how you can play your part by joining this wonderful program.

As Mayor I am proud to support the Naturally Gold Coast program in helping to deliver a range of conservation initiatives across the City.

TOM TATE MAYOR

ENVIRO WARRIOR Patrick Brabant

The NaturallyGC program is a leading environmental program on the Gold Coast.

I am honoured to be one of its ambassadors and to be involved in a program like this.

The NaturallyGC program is a must for every Gold Coast resident. They put on hundreds of events for the community including Koala tree planting days, guided bush walks and everything in between.

These events are a golden opportunity to get back to nature and connect with the amazing outdoors that are right on our doorsteps.

It’s also a great opportunity to give back to the community, nature and meet like-minded people.

I am looking forward to attending some of the events myself and posting about them on my blog.

W patsendangeredanimals.com

WILDLIFE WARRIOR Jasmine Rasmussen

It’s vital for the residents and visitors of the Gold Coast to dedicate some time to getting back to nature and appreciating what we are lucky to have on our doorstep. They can do all of this and more with the NaturallyGC program.

I’m passionate about the power our youth holds by playing an active part and over the years I have been a part of some great local organisations including;

• Wildcare Australia • Humpbacks and Highrises • Currumbin Wildlife Hospital • Griffith University shark research

Being able to appreciate the ecosystems of the Gold Coast through NaturallyGC has helped me to recognise that I want to be a voice for the native flora and fauna that we co-exist with. I’m currently working towards starting my own research project into koala toxicology at Griffith University and look forward to being involved with NaturallyGC.

Summary of activitiesOur Gold Coast natural areas The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s most biodiverse cities. It includes internationally-acclaimed areas such as the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests in the southwest and the Ramsar Convention-listed coastal wetlands of southern Moreton Bay in the northeast.

One of the largest upland subtropical rainforest remnants in the world is situated within the Border Ranges Biodiversity Hotspot (one of only 15 biodiversity hotspots in Australia).

In addition to City-managed land, Gold Coast residents and visitors have access to more than 39,000 hectares of State-managed land. This includes Hinze Dam (Advancetown Lake), conservation parks such as South Stradbroke Island and Pine Ridge, marine parks such as Moreton Bay and national parks such as Springbrook National Park, Nerang National Park, Tamborine National Park and Lamington National Park.

The City manages and protects our natural areas by:

• undertaking ecological restoration and maintenance of City managed natural areas• encouraging hands on community involvement through the Beaches to Bushland Landcare,

BeachCare and NaturallyGC programs• supporting private landholders through Land for Wildlife and the Conservation

Partnerships program• developing strategies (Our Natural City Strategy), plans and programs that help us to enhance

the city’s biodiversity• empowering residents to take action, whether big or small, to ensure the long-term survival of

the koala population with the Koala Friends Program.

Discover what we’re doing to protect our local environment and explore how you can play an active part in protecting, preserving and connecting to our natural areas.

Story of our country garden

Australian plants provided resources which sustained Indigenous Australians for thousands of years.

The story of our country landscape relates to a small part of the intimate knowledge and relationships Aboriginal Australians had with certain species of plants. This landscape exists to help conserve some of the Indigenous heritage of the Gold Coast. This journey of the Yugambeh language groups starts on the coast through plantings representing wetlands, heathlands, coastal headlands and enters littoral rainforest. It then merges with subtropical rainforest as the path passes through volcanic rock mounds symbolising a montane landscape and the rising of the rivers.

Yugambeh Museum

The Yugambeh Museum, Language and Heritage Research Centre aims to record and promote the traditional knowledge of our region, especially the Yugambeh language which was spoken throughout South East Queensland.

We work with and bring the community together through many initiatives centred around cultural and educational exchange, so that future generations have the opportunity to embrace our language, hear our stories and truly connect with their Indigenous legacy as a relevant part of their today and tomorrow.

Beyond our home of the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim, we also work as ‘one voice’ and collaborate with other communities throughout the state, to assist with the preservation and revitalisation of their own languages and traditions to ensure their ongoing inclusion in today’s cultural landscape.

Nature Play QLD

Nature Play QLD inspires children’s outdoor play, learning and love of nature. It is founded on the understanding that unstructured play outdoors is fundamental to a full and healthy childhood. Nature Play increases the time children spend in unstructured play in nature by providing resources, information, events and activity ideas for adults to support their children’s outdoor play.

Nature Play QLD Passport

The City of Gold Coast has partnered with Nature Play QLD to create the Gold Coast Passport to an Amazing Childhood. The program is designed to encourage kids and their families to visit the Gold Coast’s iconic parks and places, and do more day-to-day nature play activities such as climb a tree, make a sand sculpture, build a cubby or camp under the stars. There are loads of fun outdoor missions available online, allowing kids to find an interesting mission, and then leave the computer behind to go and do it. For additional motivation, they can collect virtual points for completing each outdoor activity to build avatars and earn prizes.

There is also a physical Nature Play Passport which can be used to track progress. The passport has 11 missions to take you all across the Gold Coast, plus blank pages for ‘choose your own’ missions, stickers, suggestions for great outdoor activities and a list of 15 things every child should do before they’re 12. Parents, get your kids started today!

Collect a free copy of the Gold Coast Passport to an Amazing Childhood from your local City library or contact the City of Gold Coast.

Koala friends program

The City, in partnership with Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Wildcare Australia, has developed a koala friends program. The koala friends program forms a component of the newly endorsed citywide Koala Conservation Plan and helps inform and empower residents to take action, whether big or small, to ensure the long-term survival of the koala population across the city. Koala friends members will learn about koalas and take part in koala conservation initiatives, receive email updates about the local koala population and be invited to koala friends members-only events. As a ‘koala friend’ you will play a vital role in the preservation of the koala population.

Tackle Bin Project

Every year in Australia, thousands of birds and other wildlife are injured or killed when they encounter fishing tackle that was carelessly dropped on the ground instead of being disposed of safely in a rubbish bin. Tackle bins offer a handy solution for unwanted fishing line and tackle, as well as increasing awareness of the need for safe disposal of unwanted fishing line and hooks. The Tackle Bin Project Gold Coast was initiated in March 2017, with the introduction of 12 bins at popular land based fishing locations. By December,2018 we had collected 54km of fishing line and over 4000 fishing hooks! We are looking to expand the project in 2019, so check out our website below where you can find out more about being involved through volunteering as one of our bin buddies!

Protect our natural areasThere are many things we can do to help preserve the Gold Coast’s amazing natural areas.

For more information visit cityofgoldcoast.com.au/namu

Help protect our natural areas

Below are some helpful tips to assist you in protecting our natural surroundings.

• Keep to formed tracks when bushwalking, trail running, horse riding and mountain biking.

• Remember to take your rubbish away with you when visiting our natural areas or use the bins provided.

• Limit fertilisers in your garden.

• Dispose of garden waste responsibly. Never dump garden clippings or aquarium plants in the bush, in waterways or on roadsides.

• Plant local native species in your garden.

• Control environmental weeds in your garden and prevent them from escaping your backyard.

• Have your domestic animals micro-chipped and ensure they stay within your property or in designated and signed areas.

• Report illegal rubbish dumping.

• Report sightings of pest animals.

• Report illegal activity in our conservation areas.

• Be stormwater responsible and consider the rubbish and pollutants that come from your own backyard.

• Educate your family, friends and neighbours on how they can also help.

• Don’t litter. Discard your rubbish appropriately. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

• Join a Bushcare, Landcare or BeachCare group and help care for your environment.

• Private landholders with more than one hectare of land may be eligible to obtain free advice on weed management through the City’s Land for Wildlife scheme.

Contact

Environmental weeds

Environmental weeds are the second biggest threat to our natural environment. You can obtain a free copy of the City’s Environmental Weeds of the Gold Coast booklet by phoning 07 5667 5972 or download at cityofgoldcoast/environmentalweeds

Download the City of Gold Coast app

Reporting illegal dumping, an abandoned vehicle, a pothole or a water leak is now easier and faster with the help of the City’s mobile phone app. You can submit a photo, which along with its GPS location, is immediately sent to us. Once the issue has been reviewed (during business hours), we can arrange for the necessary action to be taken. The app is available for iOS and Android.

Responsible gardening

It is important when considering plants for your garden to choose the correct plant species for your area. Sourcing locally grown plants that are suited to the vegetation and soil type of your area will ensure a healthier, stronger plant. You may also want to consider planting a wide range of plant types such as vines, groundcovers, shrubs and trees to create different fauna habitats and food sources for native animals that use your garden and add colour and texture to various parts of the garden.

Whether you’re looking to plant your own private urban native oasis or undertake landscape- scale bush regeneration projects, you can download the free GroNative app developed by Griffith University, Natura Pacific and the Queensland Government. It uses postcode geo-location and tailor-made gardening styles to allow you to hand-pick a native planting palette that will flourish in the chosen area. Find our more by downloading the GroNative app.

W cityofgoldcoast.com.au/nativegardening

Planting a garden with native plants can have many positive benefits and outcomes:

• Once established, only minimal garden maintenance is required.• Native gardens require less water. They attract native birds, butterflies and frogs.• They provide a food source and habitat for local fauna.• A variety of garden styles can still be created e.g. formal, informal and native edible gardens.• Insecticides and fungicides are not needed as native plants are adapted to the local conditions.• Land containing native bush is aesthetically attractive which can increase its real estate value.• Native land can assist in connecting existing bushland pockets, creating a wildlife corridor.

You can download a plant selection guide and backyard biodiversity booklets which provide information about the local native plants for your garden and how you can support our native animals by creating habitat for local species such as native bees and frogs.
