The Year in Review 2016 was another strong year for Nature Camp and the Nature Camp Foundation due to the support of the Nature Camp Community – campers, staff, parents, alumni, board members, foundations, garden clubs and other community organizations. The Nature Camp Foundation contributed to Nature Camp in the following key areas in 2016:

• Financial and In-Kind support for facilities improvements • Established the Gus Deeds Memorial Scholarship Account and the Craig Stuart

Scholarship Account • Provided the equivalent of 7 full scholarships to Nature Campers • Began the process of updating and renovating the Educational Building

The Nature Camp Foundation provided $28,134.00 in direct financial support to Nature Camp for capital equipment, and materials used at Service Weekends for capital improvements in 2016. The NCF also provided $6589.00 in direct scholarship support.

The Nature Camp Foundation recruited, fed, and coordinated the efforts of volunteers at two Service Weekends in 2016: May 20-22 and September 16-18. Principal projects at these weekends comprised replacing floor joists under the BTM, replacing roof shingles on the Caretakers house and the Canteen, creating new benches for the classrooms by the creek, painting the Museum, replacing siding and treating many of the buildings with carbolineum, and many more smaller projects. 142 individuals attended one or more Service Weekends in 2016. The work completed by volunteers saves Camp tens of thousands of dollars each year. And, we all manage to have a great time during Service Weekends as well.

Using funds donated to the Gus Deeds Memorial Fund, the Nature Camp Foundation transferred $31,789.00 to establish the Gus Deeds Memorial Scholarship Account. The NCF also established the Stuart Craig Memorial Scholarship Account with donated funds of $13,325.00. Each of these scholarship accounts will provide a full and half scholarship respectively each year to deserving campers.

The NCF provided the equivalent of 7 full camper scholarships, including the Gus Deeds and Craig Stuart scholarships. These contributions, combined with those of Garden Clubs and other generous scholarship providers, ensure that youth from all backgrounds have a high quality, meaningful Nature Camp experience. Of the 343 youth who came to Nature Camp in 2016, 36% received some form of financial assistance.

All of these activities are undertaken to ensure that Camp continues to offer quality environmental education to youth and adults. Camp continues to thrive due to these contributions. Camper enrollment continues to exceed expectations for both youth and adult sessions. Adult session had an attendance in 2016 of 32 attendees.

In 2016, the Nature Camp Foundation continued to learn and utilize the new constituent management system, ETapestry, to better support the Foundation in staying in touch with members of the Nature Camp community. The benefits of this new system are very visible: individuals can now update their contact info on the website; we are alerting our base about upcoming events through email blasts, online voting for board positions is currently in place, and individuals can now sign up for email communications and opt out of print publications.

NCF investments followed the market, experiencing gains in 2016. At year end, the Legacy Account, a fund supporting the long-term operation and mission of Nature Camp, held $438,908, up 10% from 2015. The Scholarship Accounts, designed to provide a long-term source of financial assistance to campers, include the following: Deeds Memorial Scholarship at $33,760.00, Craig Memorial Scholarship at $14,147 and the NCF Scholarship Fund at $82,776. The third and most active NCF account is the Operating Account, closing out the year at $86,798.00. The NCF was the recipient of two significant gifts, a $10,000 bequest from Sidney Coulling’s estate, and a $30,000 gift from the Layne family that is being used to revitalize and renovate the Nature Camp Education Building. The Museum in the Education Building was renamed the Mary Jane Gannaway Layne Museum during the fall Service Weekend.

Nature Camp continues to be blessed with strong Nature Camp, Inc. and Nature Camp Foundation leadership. Nature Camp, Inc. President, Amy Kasdorf Gonzalez and Executive Director of Nature Camp, Flip Coulling, continue to provide dedicated, sound leadership to Nature Camp. At the conclusion of 2016, Alia Anderson, Kajsa Svarfar and Ana Edwards stepped down from their respective board positions. We are grateful for their service. We are also delighted to welcome their 2017 replacements: Adam Rotche, Joe Garvin and Nina Chew Anderson.

Respectfully, Annie White President, Nature Camp Foundation
