in this issue...People live at the top of most pyramids in the animal kingdom. Humans control the future of the entire eco-system. Unfortunately, many of us know very little about the world in which we live. Our only interaction with other parts of the ecosys-tem happens in zoos and in school. Sometimes, our en-vironment forces us to pay more attention to how we are treating the planet by staging revolts against our ir-responsibility. But, that atten-tion fades quickly once the immediate situation resolves. I hops to teach people more about the world in which we live. If we are able to live peacably with each other as well as with our cohabi-tors, plants and anilmals alike, our own expderience is enriched. Otherwise, na-ture may very well decide humans are the invasive species causing trouble in the system. Hopefully, our species will be treated more kindly if that day comes than we treat those parts of nature we dont like.

With more than ten years of experience in personnel management, uncountable bylines and published articles, experience supervising reporters and writers, and a track record of improving systems of operation at several organizations, I could bring a lot to the table at The Nature Conservancy.

In my most recent position as Vendor & Volunteer Manager with Street Sense, I successfully oversaw a team of more than 35 volunteers and interns responsible for the production of a biweekly print publication covering issues important to people experiencing homelessness and poverty with a monthly paid distribution of more than 30,000 copies. Additionally, our organization posted items online through a blog and social media on a daily basis.

Since leaving Street Sense, I have worked to gain an increased understanding of skills essential in the new media environment. I have experience in web design-including html, css, Javascript and php. The Big ?When collectors become poachers, is anyone reallly watching?

Starting September 1, 2013, the World Wildlife Fund premieres a new web series exploring wildlife crime and the global

poaching crisis. Many well-known animals suffer population declines each year at the hands of money-seekers hoping to cash in on their hunting abilities. While some poach-ers focus on big name species such as ele-phants, big cats, rhinos, and large fish, many smaller animals face possible extinction with less large-scale attention paid to their plight.

Butterflies natural beauty has long attracted collectors interests. Although many collec-tors limit their activity to plentiful species or to specimens derived from captive popula-tions raised specifically as future specimens, greed and pride drive some enthusiasts to seek species on the brink of extinction. In some cases, poachers receive acclaim from the scientific community even after their unethical behavior is exposed.

Thomas Kral spends much of his times in the hardwood forests and marshes of southern Florida chasing the most elusive and rare butterflies on the planet. As recently as 2012, Kral bragged openly about two of his prized possessions: fully intact specimens of the Schaus Swallowtail and the Nickerbean Blue butterflies.

He might be the only person in the United States to see both butterflies in the wild. His specimens offer proof of his conquest.

In the wild, both the Schaus Swallowtail and Nickerbean Blue cling to survival. Both have suffered dramatic declines in their natural habitats due to deforestation, land development, and mosquito control.

The Schaus Swallowtail first received protection from the federal government in 1984. In 2012, officials counted only 41

live specimens living wildly. Kral claims his trophy was collected prior to the federal ban, although he was once required to forfeit it as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors. The government returned the specimen after Kral com-pleted the terms of the plea deal.

The Nickerbean Blue has only recently received protection as an endangered species after US Fish and Wildlife officials noted a marked drop in the population. Kral keeps his speci-men displayed prominently in his study. In an intersection between scientists and poachers, Kral is thought to be the first person to find the Nickerbean Blue in the United States. Previously, the species only inhabited Cuba and the Ba-hamas possibly coming to south Florida during a hurricane.

While butterfly poaching does not always garner the same international attention as the poaching of larger animals, conservationists believe poaching of any kind demonstrates a lack of ecosystem understanding. According to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, butterflies pollinate more plants than any other animal on the planet expect bees. While habi-tat loss and pesticide usage cause the most damage to butterfly populations, poaching by collectors, either for personal use or for sale to others, ranks 3rd.

Prized TrophyRare species, like the Nickerbean Blue (Cyclar-gus Ammon), challenge collectors ethically and legally. Some collectors pay thousands of dollars for a single, intact specimen. With only a few dozen sightings each year, each capture pushes the species closer to permanent loss.

Local Flavor

Red Admirals migrate from south Texas into northern areas of the United States up to twice each year. Their larvae feed on nettles. Adults prefer the butterfly bushs sweet nectar.

Male Eastern Tiger Swallowtails frequently hang out in social circles. They are one of the most common butterflies in the eastern United States preferring the nectar of plants with red or pink flowers.

Sea GullsFoe or Friend?Icelandic study reveals gulls vital role in coastline development

After so-called Super Storm Sandy swept through the East Coast of the United States, whole ocean front communities were aban-doned in an instant. Where once walked thousands of tourists each day, only the occasional photogra-pher surveying the damage interrupted the sea gulls searching for food.

For now, the sea gulls rule the beaches doing what they have always seemed to have done: eat fish and poop everywhere. Soon enough, the people will come back and will again go to town hall meeting to discuss what to do about all of the sea gulls on the beaches making it impossible to find a parking spot.

A team of Icelandic scientists believes we should not be so quick to condemn sea gulls, claiming sea gull colonies promote coastline stability.

According to the scientists, the sea gulls migratory nature, as well as their feeding habits and digestive functions, deposit essential nutrients and other chemi-cals into often under-developed environment provid-ing plants the resources to survive. These plants, and their root systems, slow erosion on sandy beaches and aid in barrier island development.

The team conducted the study on which they based their findings on the relatively new North Atlantic island of Surtesy. The island rose from a volcanic eruption beneath the ocean in 1963. Biologists and botanists have flocked to the island ever since to study life cycles from their beginning.

Starting in July 2004, Dr. B.D. Sigurdsson from the Ag-ricultural University of Iceland and Dr. B. Magnusson from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History mea-

sured the ecosystem respiration rate, soil properties, and surface cover of vascular plants in several parts of the island differentiating between areas inside and outside an established sea gull colonys area.

According to the researchers findings, areas with higher concentrations of sea gull nests contain healthier soil and more vegetation. Their measure-ments show better soil respiration rates, lower pH lev-els, better balance between nitrogen and carbon, and significant reductions in soil temperatures within the sea gull colony. According to their research, the scientists have found no other significant source of nitrogen, an essential element for plant growth, on the island.

These findings come at an important time for con-servationists concerned with preserving migratory waterfowl habitats and populations. The sea gull, specifically, often receives negative at-tention for many reasons. Usually, this negative atten-tion comes from people concerned with recreational uses of the sea gulls natural habitat. However, recently, some conservationists have joined the anti-sea gull movement. They say displaced sea gulls are responsible for creating havoc with other species, most notably with whale calves in Argentina.

As a result of their study, Sigurdsson and Magnusson hope people will realize the vital role sea gulls play in their habitats. As ocean levels rise around the planet and coastlines are increasingly threatened by stron-ger storms, barrier islands and coastal marshes play an important role in protecting us from harm. Without the sea gull and its ability to transport vital nutrients, these vital protections would not exist.

Killing gulls without a permit violates laws in most western countries

In the United States, the Migratory Bird Act of 1918 prohibits killing, capturing, hunting, or taking of gulls, eggs or nests without a permit.

The city of Kunming, China hosts an annual sea gull festival in honor of a large gull colony at nearby Green Lake.
