b e t w e e n a p h i l o s o p h e r a n dam a n o f s c i e n c e ? However much d e f i n i t ek n o w l e d g e t h e l a t t e r m a y c o n t r i b u t e o n a s u b j e c t , i t i s a l w a y s o p e n

t o t h e f o r m e r t o c o m p l a i n t h a t t h e r e s e a r c h h a s n o t r e v e a l e d t h e

' i n n e r n a t u r e ' o f t h e p h e n o m e n a s t u d i e d . A p h i l o s o p h e r c o u l d t h u s

s w e e p away t h e w h o l e o f n e u r o l o g y b y s a y i n g , " But y o u h a v e n o t

t o l d u s w h a t i s t h e n e r v o u s s y s t e m " . One m i g h t h a v e t h o u g h t t h a t

i f p s y c h o - a n a l y s t s " h a v e d e m o n s t r a t e d b e y o n d d i s p u t e t h e i m m e n s e

i m p o r t a n c e " o f s o m e t h i n g , t h e y s u r e l y must h a v e t o l d u s s o m e t h i n g

a b o u t t h i s t h i n g , e v e n t h o u g h t h e y m a y h u m b l y a d m i t t h a t t h e y h a v e

v e r y m u c h more t o l e a r n a b o u t i t . I n a n e w b r a n c h o f s c i e n c e e x a c t

d e f i n i t i o n s a r e p o s t p o n e d a s l o n g a s p o s s i b l e u n t i l a c o n s i d e r a b l e b o d y

o f k n o w l e d g e h a s b e e n a c c u m u l a t e d , t h e r e a s o n b e i n g t h a t o b s e r v a t i o n

a n d i n v e s t i g a t i o n a r e f o u n d t o b e more p r o f i t a b l e o c c u p a t i o n s t h a n

I n s p i t e o f t h i s g e n e r a l c o n s i d e r a t i o n , h o w e v e r , a n a t t e m p t m a yb e m a d e t o meet t h e w i s h e s o f t h o s e wh o f e e l t h e n e e d o f a d e f i n i t i o no f d e s i r e . I t a k e i t t h a t t h e word h a s t wo d i s t i n c t c o n n o t a t i o n s ,

w h i c h I s h a l l v e n t u r e t o d e s i g n a t e a s t h e ' s u p e r n a t u r a l ' and t h e

' n a t u r a l i s t i c ' r e s p e c t i v e l y . I n t h e f o r m e r s e n s e t h e word r e f e r s t o a
