PL AY WRIGHT ’S NOTE

The writing of the play was made possible by a commission from the Manhattan Theatre Club and a fellowship through the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. It was further developed with assistance from Urban Stages (NYC), Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, Shenandoah International Playwrights, High Desert Play Development/New Mexico State University, and Austin Script Works. My thanks to all for their support during the writing of this play.

DIRECTOR ’S NOTE

We are in the midst of another political season (we seem to always be in the midst of a political season, don’t we) and we seem more polarized as a society than ever before in our lifetimes. Compromise is a dirty word for many, and far from respecting the other’s point of view that’s different than our own, commentators and others brand those that disagree with them as traitors and liars. We seem as intractable in our camps of belief as it is possible to be. How does a pluralistic democracy hope to survive rifts such as we seem to be enduring today? Neither I, nor this play has the full answer to that question, but it does pose the question in a witty, personal and respectful way and engages what was, perhaps the first skirmishing ground of the current culture wars – school science curriculum. Respect, a willingness and ability to listen, and an assumption that the other is not an idiot all seem to be preconditions for finding the ability to hold opposing points of view and still live, work and study together. That’s what this play asks us to look at again: simple truths so easily forgotten. We hope you have fun along the journey and see that as always, the theatre tells us that relationships matter more than ideas. People are more important than principles.
