Happy New Year!Well, 2013 has arrived, and for many of us that means we are

embracing new beginnings. (Sounds better than committing to New Year’s resolutions, right?) January in Wisconsin is prob-ably the perfect time to distract ourselves with missions of self-improvement. If you are seeking a healthier lifestyle in the New Year, you are certainly in the right place! What I’ve learned from this magazine’s helpful monthly content is this: If you are serious about making some changes in your life, get support, be realistic, keep an open mind, and don’t let yourself get discouraged!

Our country is kicking off 2013 by celebrating National Blood Donors Awareness Month. The American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) encourages you to learn more about the urgent need for blood and to become a regular donor. Consider these American Red Cross statistics: 1.) Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood! 2.) Five million patients receive blood in the U.S. in a year! 3.) One donation can save the lives of up to three people! I use exclamation points because these are quite impactful realities. If you are considering making a difference by donating this New Year, please know that it is safe, simple and appreciated more than you know! Find a donation location near you by visit-ing www.aabb.org.

Our authors have some great ideas to share with all of us who are in the continuous pursuit of a healthy mind, body and spirit. Doug Brown presents the facts and evidence that proves Tai Chi is not only good for us, but a pleasure to boot! Jack Erb shares his advice to the 55+ crowd about choosing supplements. Laura Schuch encourages us to get out of our comfort zones and try some new exercise/activity options in the New Year. And, of course, there are many more, so enjoy!

Best wishes to all of you who are embracing a new beginning for yourselves. May this be a year of success for you!

In health and happiness,

you wouldn’t think that this snarled, ugly little root would be good for much of anything, but inside that grungy skin is

an entire medicine chest of chemical compounds that have been shown to help digestion, reduce nausea and even protect the heart.

Ginger is a jack-of-all-trades for stomach ailments, but it’s especially good at relieving pain, since the gingerol it contains helps stop intestinal contractions. You can drink it as a tea or in capsule form, but chewing a slice of raw ginger also works. With the upcoming winter months, ginger in tea with honey will keep you warm all over.

If you have episodes of the excruciating head pain known as cluster headaches, you can make an analgesic tea by adding one teaspoon each of dried feverfew, lemon balm and ginger to a cup of hot water. Steep for ten minutes, strain out the herbs and sip. It will keep migraines away also because ginger root helps keep

blood vessels from dilating and pressing against sensitive nerves. Ginger appears to have mild antibacterial properties that may

help prevent infection. The next time you get a cut or scrape that may become infected, start loading your recipes with ginger for a little extra protection.

Ginger spread on meat is used in the third world countries to kill the parasites that may be in their meats.

The pungent aroma of ginger comes from dozens of power-ful chemicals that strengthen immunity, increase healing circulation and kill germs that can cause sinus infections.

Ginger in any form, including ginger tea, ginger candy and fresh ginger, dampens the vestibular impulses in the brain that make you nauseated. In fact, studies have shown that ginger is superior to dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) when it comes to relieving nausea related to motion sickness. It may help also when you are pregnant, but consult with your doctor first.

To help ease back pain, mix equal parts of ginger, chamo-mile and peppermint. Use one teaspoon of the mixture per one cup of boiling water and steep, covered, for ten minutes. Strain and drink a cup three to four times per day.

Add one teaspoon of grated raw ginger to a cup of boiling water, steep for ten to fifteen minutes, strain and add honey, agave or stevia for a tea to eliminate athlete’s foot. One can also soak their feet in leftover tea (before adding sweetener) before bed.

Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb that can take the edge off arthritis pain, along with body aches and pains.

In flu season, and to help you from vomiting, avoid drinking water or other fluids with salt or sugar

because they’ll come back up. Instead, sip clear, sweetened liquids like ginger

tea or natural ginger ale.The oil of ginger is similar to the

capsaicin in peppers and can clear your stuffy nose. Ginger also allevi-

ates the “gas” from foods. Eating ginger with foods raises your body tempera-

ture and your metabolism, so you burn calories for fuel rather

than store them as fat, along with speeding up your digestion.

Overeating from the holidays can be helped by munching on two to four ginger snaps to soothe

your stomach.

The notion that one type of dog or cat food is all your pet needs for a lifetime is thankfully fading into the past. We are learning that just like humans need a wide variety of foods

in our diets to maintain health, so do our pets. Feeding a variety of foods to your dog or cat does not have to be difficult. Rotation simply means that you will have at least three or four foods that your pet does well with and rotate those foods from time to time. Here are some helpful facts and tips about a rotation diet.

A rotation diet can be done whether you are feeding dry, canned or raw foods, or a combination of those food types. If you are feeding dry food (with water added), you might try an occasional meal of

canned food or raw food. Canned or raw foods are less processed and may supply your pet with more naturally derived nutrients.

Rotating foods with different protein sources may help your pet avoid building up food intolerance or allergies. For example, if your current food contains mostly chicken, you will want to offer foods with a different meat such as duck, fish or venison.

You do not have to stay within one brand of food. By varying the brands, you are also varying vegetables, grains, botanicals, and vitamin and mineral sources too.

We have learned from holistic veterinarians that rotating at least every three bags or every three months is a good first goal. Rotat-ing more frequently is even more desirable making a finicky cat or dog more interested in a wider selection of foods and less likely to loose interest.

Introduce a new food slowly. Begin with adding 10% of the new food to just 90% of the serving size of the regular food. Keep the mix at the same proportion for a couple of days. Increase the new food and decrease the old food by 10% every couple of days while watching for stomach upset, stool firmness or other signs that your pet is not doing well with the new food. If upset does occur, return to the old food and try another selection. No matter how “high-quality” a food is, not every food is right for your dog or cat.

Once you have your pet on the new food, it should be no trouble switching among the foods your cat or dog is used to. Try a few new foods to give your pet many options. This may come in handy when the pet supply store is out of a type you feed or when a company changes a food formula.

Your young puppy or kitten will benefit by being exposed to different flavors and textures during critical developmental stages. Your older dog or cat will keep an interest in the food bowl, asking, “What’s new today?”

We often hear that variety is the spice of life. Remember that this is true for your pets too! We are fortunate these days to have many good quality food choices in dry, canned and raw foods so we can share that variety with our animal companions!

Ah, supplements. Every day on TV I’m pitched this supple-ment and that supplement, all of which are sure to make my life better and healthier.

I confess, it is a problem for all of us. Let’s just take a look at this industry first. The dietary supple-

ment industry is, for the most part, unregulated. (Hmmm? That could be a problem right there!) While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does watch it closely, it has virtually no power to oversee or enforce unless medical claims are being made, such as “this supplement cures cancer” or “this supplement cures heart disease.” These statements are not allowed in that industry. This is not my biggest concern, however.

Labeling and truth in packaging are my biggest concerns. Many “so called” supplements are jobbed out to manufacturers who may or may not include the correct herbs in their supplements. And if the correct herb is used, it may not be the correct part of the plant or may be of inferior quality.

While supplements come in all shapes and sizes, and each of us has our own particular needs; there are some things that each of us can benefit from. However, one must do their research in order to select the appropriate and best-quality supplement, especially as we mature. A wise elder once told me, “after age 60, we must pay much closer attention to our health; spending as much as 30 percent of our time minding our bodies and listening to our aches and pains.” Very wise counsel, indeed.

Doctors and scientists tell us that our bodies change completely every seven years. I have found this to be true both for myself and my peers. I have always said, it’s not the years but the miles on the body that make the difference. Watch your peers as they age; once over 56, things start to change — dramatically for some, not as much for others. Why?

Heredity? Maybe. Diet? Maybe. Stress? Absolutely! Lifestyle? Yes!Around the mid-fifties, the body no longer produces the

enzymes in our digestive track to digest food as it did in younger years. Thus, we do not benefit from some of the nutrients in our food. So, at age 55 and beyond, we need to supplement with food enzymes and probiotics at the very least. Yes, we still need a multi-vitamin and a calcium magnesium supplement, too.

Probiotics have many benefits, including:

lOwer ChOleSTerOl. In one study, people with high cholesterol who were given probiotic-fortified yogurt had a 4.5 percent decrease in total cholesterol and a 7.5 percent decrease in LDL cholesterol (that’s the bad kind).

TreAT yeAST ANd UriNAry TrACT iNfeCTiONS. The vagina ecosystem can be thrown out of balance by a wide variety of outside factors, including spermicides, birth control pills and even just taking oral antibiotics. Probiotics can help restore a healthy balance of good bacteria to the vaginal environment.

relieve ANxieTy. In a study involving healthy but stressed individuals, participants were given specific strains of two probiot-ics (lactobacillus and bifidobacterium longum). At the end of the month, they showed fewer signs of anxiety and depression, and a greater ability to cope with everyday stress.

Keep that 55+-year-old body up to speed and running effi-ciently with supplements and lots of water; alkaline water if you can get it!

well, here we are at the turn of yet another new year. 2012 has come and gone, leaving us wanting a fresh, new start. For many of us, the turn of a new year marks a

starting point for some major life change. Yes, the resolution is upon us. With that said, what would your best guess be for the number one New Year’s resolution in our country? If you thought weight loss, you are absolutely correct, so please read on. First, let’s look at a few facts. Then let me help you lay down some steps on how to make your resolution your reality.

Did you know that more than 80 percent of all the people who lose weight regain the lost weight, and often a bit extra?

According to some studies, the relapse rate may even be as high as 95 percent. This tells me that a lot of people have lost weight but very few keep it off permanently. So we really don’t have a weight-loss problem, but rather a weight-relapse problem.

As we promise ourselves that this is going to be our year, we’re very ambitious. But like so many others, it’s not a well-thought-out plan. With no real road map in place, it’s like driving across the country in the middle of the night without headlights, expect-ing to reach your destination. That’s exactly why so many of us with good intentions watch our New Year’s resolutions fade as that high-octane enthusiasm slips into reality check.

With any good intention, you must have a well-thought-out plan on how you are going to reach your destination. Let’s lay the ground work and make it visual. This will ultimately become your map to success.

focus Set your goals and put them in writing. This will keep them in your mind, affirming daily a clearer picture of what your intentions are. I suggest making a vision board, which is basically a collage of images and writings that are visual reminders of what you’re striv-ing for. Visualization techniques are very powerful. I believe that if you don’t have a plotted vision board, how can you have a vision?

PrioritizeYou may have set goals, but where are they on your priority list? If this is not a top priority then it will soon fall off of your list. Simply put, make it your first priority.

SupportGoing it alone is tough with any endeavor. Getting people to rally behind you when the challenge gets hard will keep you on track. Find a fitness partner, a mentor or coach, family, friends, your spouse — any people you can count on for information and emotional support.

AccountabilityKeep score for your own accountability. Measurements, progress charts, weight records, and a food and training journal are all great self-accountability trackers. Also seek outside accountability from someone you trust that is in your camp. Reporting to someone with your results will keep the accountability factor honest.

PatienceThink short- and long-term realistic expectations. Weight loss comes in unpredictable spurts. Remember this going in, when you set up shop, so to speak. Average healthy weight loss is about 1 to 2 pounds per week. You will have big weeks, small weeks and weeks where seemingly nothing happens, at least according to the scale. So be patient and don’t throw in the towel at the first sign of a plateau. Stick to your plan; you will overcome.

PlanNotice how many times I have stressed planning and visualizing. In order to be successful at anything you must have a well-thought-out plan. There is no such thing as winging it to success. Again, get it on paper. Write down your eating and workout plans. Prioritize by setting up your weekly schedule. Take the time to do it for you.

“I don’t have time” or “I forgot” are excuses that ultimately keep you from your goal.

balanceYou absolutely must find balance. Don’t take your eating plan or your workouts to the extreme. Don’t live with the “all or nothing” rule. Remember, if you want this to last, it must be looked at as a marathon and not a sprint. Let the “I want it all” attitude go and instead shoot for slow and steady. Your patience will be well rewarded.

PersonalizeMake your nutrition and training program fit you and your needs. Make it adapt around your personality, lifestyle, schedule and disposition. This is the only way you will incorporate it into your lifestyle and make it a permanent placement.

There you have it: 8 simple steps to success. Apply them to any task you wish to accomplish. The results will speak for themselves.

Community Reinvestment Fund (CRF) Grants AvailableCooperative Principle #7: “Concern for Community” is the primary motivation for the CRF. Since 1992, Willy Street Co-op has awarded over $283,000 in grants that support a diverse array of projects in the areas of food, nutrition, health/well being, sustainable agriculture, cooperative education and social change. it’s January and chances are (unless you live in Tucson or Tampa), you are not getting outside as much as you were

a few short months ago. Going outside — being in nature — is one of the best ways to support our children and keep them

healthy. Where else can you get all of the following in one fell swoop: fresh air, exer-cise, inspiration, and appreciation and reverence for all things?

Nature is a healing balm because, as John Muir, author and early advocate of pres-ervation of wilderness, declares: “nature provides strength to body and soul.” This is especially true for children. At Waldorf Schools, the teachers regard rosy cheeks as a measure of good health.

what can you do outside in January?1. bUild wiTh SNOw. What could be

more fun than making igloos, snow forts, snow animals, bowling alleys or even snow villages?

2. wAlk yOUr dOG. If you don’t have a dog, ask a neighbor if you can walk his/hers!

3. feed The birdS. Make pine cone bird feeders: hunt for pine cones, spread peanut butter on them, dip them in bird

how do you keep your children healthy in winter? Go outside!.......................................................................by Vicki kingsbury

“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.”

seed, add a string around the top and then hang them from trees. The birds will enjoy the treat, and your children will enjoy watching the birds.

4. CreATe ObSTACle COUrSeS. Using snow, form walls to climb over, build tunnels to crawl through, dig holes to jump over and create stepping stones. Then climb, crawl, jump, step, roll and run through the course. Hold a mini Olympics!

5. MAke SNOw ANGelS. When everyone is tired from the Olympics (see above), lie down in the snow and create snow angels. Look at the sky above, and then identify what the cloud formations look like: snow angels, white dolphins, fluffy castles ... use your imaginations!

6. bUild A bONfire. Enjoy a winter picnic, and for dessert make s’mores.

7. PlAy GAMeS. Call some neighbors or friends, and have fun with the classics, such as Red Light, Green Light, Mother May I, Freeze Tag (how appropriate in winter!) or Red Rover.

8. TrACk ANiMAlS. When it snows, it’s easy and fun to find — and then try to identify — animal tracks.

9. Tell STOrieS. Find a beautiful spot to read a book, such as “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats. Or better yet, tell a story about when you were a child and what you enjoyed doing outside. Children love hearing about your own childhood adventures. What better way to warmly connect with your child!

All of these activities are easy, free and healthy. But dress warm so your children can truly enjoy these activities. A good rule of thumb for dressing your children is

three layers on the bottom and four layers on the top. What does this mean? Your child needs long underwear, pants and snow pants on the bottom, with an under-shirt, shirt, sweater and jacket on top. Then add a warm hat that completely covers the ears and a neck warmer (it stays on better than a scarf for active young children).

In a recent article published in the Guardian, George Monbiot says, “There is no substitute for what takes place outdoors; not least because the greatest joys of nature are unscripted.” If you want to help your child develop their imagination, bring them outside and watch what happens. In a natural environment, one almost feels it is the child’s true home.

In her famous essay The Ecology of Imag-ination in Childhood, Edith Cobb proposed that contact with nature stimulates

creativity. Reviewing the biographies of 300 “geniuses,” she exposed a common theme: intense experiences of the natural world in the middle age of childhood (between 5 and 12). Animals and plants, she contended, are among “figures of speech in the rhetoric of play ... which the genius in particular of later life seems to recall.”

So dress warm, go outside and live fully into nature’s offerings, which will help you and your child develop the capacity of strength to body and soul!

your digestive system contains more bacteria than all the cells in your body combined. One hundred trillion bacte-ria work to digest your food and also prevent disease. We

now know that the right bacteria can help treat over a hundred diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome, chronic diarrhea, yeast infections, immune problems and even allergies.

It all starts when a baby passes through the birth canal, where it picks up the correct bacteria to start culturing the intestinal system. When a cesarean section is performed, some infants have allergies, lowered immune response and poor microflora. Not good. A healthy digestive tract filters and eliminates a variety of

damaging substances, including “bad” bacteria, toxins, chemicals and other waste products. The good bacteria synthesize vitamins, allow nutrients to be absorbed and act in the beneficial process of anti-viral, antioxidant, antifungal and immune up-regulation.

If your gut could talk, it might say, “Listen up, we have 10 trillion soldiers that are working hard and we need good food.” Unfortu-nately, our modern diet is a real killer. Sugar or fructose, processed foods, antibiotics, chlorinated water and pesticides all decrease the amount of your good bacteria. As a result, bad bacteria like E. coli are able to flourish, causing dysentery, inflammation of the bowel wall and poor absorption of vital nutrients.

So how do we support the good bacteria? Traditionally, high bacterial foods like yogurt, fermented raw milk used to make non-commercial kefir, and even cheese curd have been used to help maintain good microflora. These support two of the main types of probiotics or beneficial bacteria strains in our colon: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus rhamnosus.

In addition to a good diet, we can support a healthy balance of our digestive bacteria with supplements. Although they might only contain a few specific strains of bacteria, each serving amounts up to 3 billion separate bacteria. This is the equivalent of over 10,000 cups of yogurt! There are many, many different powerful strains of probiotics that help our digestion and eliminate disease, and it is possible to target different conditions with the right probi-otic. There has been concern that most bacteria don’t survive our stomach acids very well, so it’s always good to find one that is enteric coated to release the microorganisms directly into your intestinal tract.

The future of natural cures by probiotic use is exciting. Studies linking the reduction of colon cancer and increased levels of immunoglobulins are promising, in addition to the known effects on intestinal inflammation. Eighty percent of our entire immune response is tied to the absorption and utilization of base nutri-ents that takes place in our intestinal tract. At a natural health care office such as ours, we can help you make the right decisions for a balanced approach to probiotic use.

is Tai Chi really good for me? What’s the evidence? In court, judges and juries make their decisions based

on facts and evidence, not guesses or gossip. Our personal healthcare decisions should be equally evidence-based. So what about Tai Chi? They say it’s good for us, but where’s the proof?

If we had asked that question just a few decades ago, we’d have found a lack of evidence. But since then, the health detectives have been hard at work. Around the globe, sleuths have searched for clues and tested hypotheses. Questions have been asked and answered. Studies have been published and scrutinized.

Is Tai Chi good for you? The staffs of Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School have examined the evidence and made their decisions. So, what’s their verdict?

Mayo Clinic reports that, “When learned correctly and performed regularly, Tai Chi can be a positive part of an overall approach to improving your health.” The benefits of Tai Chi include:

• Decreased stress and anxiety.• Increased aerobic capacity.• Increased energy and stamina. • Increased flexibility, balance and agility. • Increased muscle strength and definition.

Harvard Medical School Newsletter (May 2009) states, “When combined with standard treatment, Tai Chi appears to be helpful for several medical conditions.” They give some examples:

• ArThriTiS – Tai Chi reduced pain, improved mood and physical functioning, significantly improved flexibility and slowed the disease process.

• lOw bONe deNSiTy – A review of six controlled studies by Harvard researchers indicates that Tai Chi may be a safe and effective way to maintain bone density in postmeno-pausal women.

• breAST CANCer – A 2008 study at the University of Rochester, published in Medicine and Sport Science, found that quality of life and functional capacity (including aerobic capacity, muscular strength and flexibility) improved in women with breast cancer who did 12 weeks of Tai Chi.

• heArT diSeASe – Tai Chi significantly boosted exercise capacity, lowered blood pressure and improved levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin and C-reactive protein in people at high risk for heart disease.

• heArT fAilUre – A Harvard Medical School study revealed that 12 weeks of Tai Chi improved participants’

January tends to be the month that most people seriously assess their overall health. In fact, three of the top ten most common new Year’s

resolutions are health-related: 1) lose weight and get fit; 2) eat healthier and diet; and 3) be less stressed. Unfortunately, these are also three of the most broken promises we make to ourselves. Why the lack of follow-through? some blame lack of time or motivation, while others quickly lose hope and give up too soon. But if you ask dennis Kotnour of Healthy Inspirations in madison, he’ll tell you that most people lack the support necessary to succeed with these healthful efforts.

since dennis and his wife, mary Beth, launched their successful weight-loss program 10 years ago, they’ve helped members lose over 30,000 pounds! this unique, family-owned business has also helped members gain several things: self-confidence, energy and overall fitness, to name a few.

the Kotnours were really on the cutting edge of weight loss and wellness back in 2002, when they opened Healthy Inspirations. With the knowl-edge that optimal health is based on a combination of proper nutrition, effective exercise and sound mind/spirit, the couple saw the value in offering these resources for health seekers all under one roof. they also understood that “social support can help a person lose weight,” as the american psychological association reports.

today, more members of Healthy Inspirations than ever are benefiting from the support and convenience of this all-inclusive center. It is even recognized and recommended by doctors and nutritionists as a complete, healthy and lasting weight-loss solution!

But its members benefit in other ways than just losing weight. Kotnour sees countless members improve their health to the extent that some

medications are no longer necessary. “through life-style changes they are able to lower their cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels,” he points out. Just ask Kari Vike of Verona, who lowered her cholesterol level by over 90 points (down from 300+), lost over 25 pounds and eliminated all of her bothersome post-menopausal symptoms in a matter of months with the support of Healthy Inspirations.

“When I received my cholesterol level results, it was really a wake up call,” Vike recalls. “Combining the effects of my maturing age, menopause, poor diet and lack of exercise, my body had become a fat storing machine! and I wanted no part of being on statin drugs, as I had seen the negative effects on loved ones. From the moment I first walked in the door, everyone at Healthy Inspirations gave me hope that the program would be able to get me back on a healthy track. the lifestyle consultants are so understanding and supportive.”

the successful Healthy Inspirations program that has helped Vike and so many others combines the following services to help members on their journey to optimal health:

One-on-one cou nse li ngHealthy Inspirations’ lifestyle consultants are there for members every day to offer support, direction, motivation and expert guidance. their goal is to help every member lose weight the healthy way and achieve optimal results. With 25 years of collective weight-loss counseling experience, the long-term, dedicated staff understands the challenges of making the life-style changes necessary to be healthy and enjoy sharing their wisdom to

help members succeed. “We don’t have the high staff turnover that’s so common in this industry, so our members are able to develop a comfort level, a sense of trust with us,” explains Kotnour.

Persona lized nutrition pla nsmembers of Healthy Inspirations receive customized eating plans that incorporate grocery store foods as well as healthy cooking tips and deli-cious recipes. Food journals assist members with food choices, portion sizes and even healthier restaurant options. during one-on-one visits, life-style consultants can then review members’ journals for things like food choice, quantity and frequency, water intake and time of day (as there are better times of day to eat certain foods) and provide feedback on what’s working and not working.

Simple a nd e ffective exerciseWhile at the center, Healthy Inspirations’ members can make use of a 30-minute circuit that is proven to burn fat and build muscle. this exercise incorporates strength training and cardio for maximum benefit. there is also an extensive dVd library available for those who also want to try separate fitness classes on-site. members truly benefit from the sense of community that exists there. support doesn’t only come from staff, but other members as well. as Kotnour expains, “Weight loss doesn’t have to be private; people need support to be successful. members here make good friends with each other and are so supportive. It is a great thing to observe and be a part of.”

Relaxation se ssionssince stress directly affects your health and eating choices, Healthy Inspirations encourages members to take advantage

of relaxation sessions utilizing its shiatsu massage chair and Caribbean sun box. It’s a healthy 15-minute refresher that helps members reduce the stress in their day and negate some of the winter blues. the center also offers all-natural hormone creams that help alleviate stress and menopause symptoms. this was the answer for Vike, who was able to suppress her post-menopausal symptoms: daily hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue and hair loss.

Cellu lite redu ction treatments a nd fa cia lsalso available at Healthy Inspirations are synergie™ body and facial treatments. the body treat-ments have been approved by the Fda as a non-invasive way to reduce the appearance of cellulite and body measurements, while the facial treatments have been shown to tighten and tone the skin by improving circulation and

stimulating collagen. all services at Healthy Inspirations are performed by certified technicians and licensed aestheticians. members who enjoy success appreciate the opportunity to look as good as they feel.

“For our members, it is a way of life. some may have started out with short-term goals, but at some point everyone here is focused on improv-ing their lives, being the best they can be and feeling as good as they do now forever. they realize that they need to take more time for them-selves,” he says. Vike wholeheartedly concurs, “the last seven months of my life have been a learning experience of how to eat and live for the rest of my ‘healthy’ life.”

If you are looking to transform your life, why not make the time for your-self and schedule a free consultation and body composition analysis? Let 2013 be the year you leave excuses behind and get healthy. the individu-alized attention and support you’ll receive from Healthy Inspirations will help you succeed!

Saw palmetto is a fan-shaped palm that grows in the Southeastern United States. The berry of this palm

is used medicinally by herbalists. Saw palmetto contains vitamin A,

vitamin C and many minerals, including zinc, silicon, selenium and phosphorus. Saw palmetto is energetically warming and has volatile oils that contain alkaloids and saponins as active ingredients.

Saw palmetto berries help rebuild the endocrine system, so the berries can be beneficial for the prostate, thyroid and other glands. Another excellent use for saw palmetto is to build up strength and body

tissues. It can be used by body build-ers or those with general debility or wasting diseases. Saw palmetto has also been known to increase breast size in women.

Saw palmetto is one of the widely used phyto-therapeutic agents for (enlarged prostate) benign prostatic hyperplasia. Saw palmetto reduces pros-tate size by inhibiting the enzyme testos-terone-5-alpha-reductase from transform-ing healthy testosterone hormones into unhealthy DHT. ability to walk and quality of life. It also reduced blood levels of B-type natriuretic protein, an indicator of heart failure.

• hyPerTeNSiON – A review of 26 studies reported that in 85% of trials, Tai Chi lowered blood pressure (Preventive Cardiology, Spring 2008).

• PArkiNSON’S diSeASe – A Washington University School of Medicine study (Gait and Posture, October 2008) found that people with mild to moderately severe Parkinson’s disease showed improved balance, walking ability and overall well-being after 20 Tai Chi sessions.

• SleeP PrObleMS – In a UCLA study (Sleep, July 2008), sixteen weeks of Tai Chi improved the quality and duration of sleep signif-icantly more than standard sleep education.

• STrOke – In 136 stroke patients, 12 weeks of Tai Chi improved standing balance more than a general exercise

program (Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, January 2009).

That’s a pretty clear verdict! Tai Chi can improve overall well-being and atti-tude. It can help with better sleep and less stress. It can improve movement, flexibility and balance while it helps to strengthen the bones, the immune system and the cardiovascular system! Powerful medicine indeed!

Most importantly, doing Tai Chi is a pleasure! You may initially learn Tai Chi to improve your health, but soon you’ll notice that you feel better, happier and more alive during and after each Tai Chi session! You’ll continue because it feels good. So the verdict is in: Not only is Tai Chi powerful medicine, but also the kind of medicine you’ll enjoy taking!

here it is again … another new year. It’s the middle of winter, the holi-days (and their overindulgences)

are over and people everywhere have made New Year’s resolutions that hopefully will last longer than the month of January.

It’s easy to settle into nesting mode when it’s freezing and snowy outside; to just make excuses for why you’ll skip your workout today and do it “tomorrow” instead. Perhaps excuses come easily because you’re bored with your workout routine, and you have forgotten that there are LOTS of options for staying active that don’t necessarily require sweating away on an elliptical machine. Some of your options will include things that you’ve never tried before, but that you just might love and stick with, if you just get out of your comfort zone to try them.

Since Wisconsin is known for snow, why not take advantage of the climate instead of just wishing that summer would come back? Snowshoeing is one simple and relatively inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors. All you need are snowshoes (which are sold all over the place!) and appropriate warm clothing. You don’t even have to leave the city of Madison to snowshoe, unless you want to explore other areas. There are lots of trails right in town. Cross country skiing is also very inexpensive, since all you need are cross country skis and appropriate warm winter clothing. Again, there are many,

many trails right in the city, but you also have the choice to go to more rural areas with designated trails. Another option is ice skating. There are many well-maintained, free, outdoor places to skate in the Madison area. There are also indoor ice rinks that offer public skating at a very minimal cost. If you don’t have skates of your own, lots of places rent skates.

If being out in the cold is not appeal-ing to you, then there are some fun indoor things you can do that don’t involve using a cardio machine. Try a sport like racquet-ball or tennis (there are indoor places to play in town). Not into team sports? Perhaps dancing is more your style. If so, then you’re in luck because you can try everything from cardio-dance or ballroom dance classes to just plain shaking it out at a club. If you need some accountability, then signing up for a series of classes might be a good idea.

One of the most important keys to successfully living a healthy lifestyle is consistent exercise. It doesn’t matter so much WHAT you do (as long as you spend enough time at an appropriate intensity level for you and your goals); it matters that you exercise consistently. So be a little adventur-ous and find some activities that will provide enjoyment and fulfill your exercise needs. You’ll be much more likely to do them, and that is a recipe for success!

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us don’t understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a prac-ticing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical atten-tion. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind.

Dear Tina,Every year I make a New Year’s resolution to do something spec-tacular and a few weeks later it fades. I feel like a failure, give up and don’t address what I wanted to change until the next new year. This year, I am feeling worse than ever. I am not as physically healthy as I’d like to be, but my relationships are also suffering. I’m just not feeling like I know who I am anymore. I think (hope) my life will come together when I connect with myself again. What can I do to maintain my resolution this year of connecting with myself, losing weight and repairing struggling relationships?

Dear Losing my Resolutions,Well — you are not alone. It is rare to hear of someone maintain-ing their original New Year’s resolutions. In my experience this is nearly always due to the inner personalities we all hear chat-tering away in our heads. If you think this sounds crazy, then keep reading!

We all have parts of ourselves that seem to freeze in time when we develop beliefs about what life is all about. For example, a part of us might feel that all relationships cause pain, while

another part of us yearns for connection and knows that rela-tionships also bring joy. In many ways, both of these parts are correct, but when we get stuck in one belief and that part speaks louder than our other selves it can be really challenging to stick with a goal of any kind.

This is not a quick remedy, but the most effective way of solving these inner debates is to listen to the voices within. Listen to the battles. You may be surprised at what you discover about your inner self related to beliefs on physical health, weight, relationships, healing, and feeling replenished and joyful. There is a reason that a part of you may not want to achieve these seemingly healthy things. Intellectually, you may not understand why you would not choose health, but there may be a deeper reason or benefit that when unlocked can be unbelievably eye opening and life changing.

Tina, a Madison Intuitive Counselor and Energy Healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modali-ties of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyone’s natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

If you need help discovering your inner self or creating a dialogue, Tina sees clients individually, so you can work on this together. Good luck. You are not a failure!

it has been a month since my last visit with Michaela Torcaso at whitedoor, llc (formerly known as TIBIA IntuAction Insti-tute) and my first intuitive session. I can’t put a finger on it,

but friends have been telling me, “You seem different, you are more confident, you seem at ease, why is that?” I have, in fact, felt different since my first session, like the energy within me is flowing better.

Recently, at my second session, Michaela and I went into the same session room as last time, and I sat in the same comfy chair. We talked about what I had been experiencing since last session and how I was feeling that day. I told her that I had experienced a bit of a setback over the holidays. Michaela assured me it was part of the process of “waking up.” She asked if I was open to trying essential oils. I told her that I was game, as I had heard a great deal about them.

The brand whitedoor markets is Young Living, and all of its products are therapeutic grade and most are ingestible. She chose a combination referred to as Mood Elevating Protocol. We started with “Valor” on my wrists, then “Harmony” on my solar plexus, “Joy” over my heart and, finally, “White Angelica” just above my body in a space she referred to as my biofield. All four essential oil blends smelled great and quickly began to relax me. Michaela encouraged me to let go of being logical and to surrender. (You should know, for a control freak like me, surrendering was not something that came naturally!) The oils, along with her encour-agement, helped me to do that.

Soon I was feeling empowered, confident and focused. There was an emotional release as I felt the weight of the world lifting off my shoulders. Michaela said, “We all have the choice about how much we wish to suffer.” She was right! We have choices about how we react in many situations and how we relate to other people. My intuitive session helped me rediscover this. It isn’t about fixing or changing myself, or about modifying the behaviors of other people, as Michaela helped me rediscover.

I had always been “in tune” to aromatherapy, but I had never experienced something like this. How could just a drop or two of oil change the way I was feeling? Each essential oil that was applied topically had a purpose. Young Living’s essential oils deliver posi-tive benefits to the body through smell, direct absorption [what I

experienced] and normal digestive processes, and bring balance to all systems in the body. As a distributor, Michaela has access to over 400 different oils and products and also has the expertise to recom-mend the ones that will best suit each person’s needs.

Today, I am still feeling empowered, confident and focused. When I am feeling a bit out of sorts, I remember what I learned and experienced in my sessions and apply my essential oils. Thank you, Michaela and whitedoor!

New year’s resolutionsDoes your resolution list resemble a kid’s letter to Santa? You write down everything you want, hoping things will magically appear like presents under the tree?

There’s another way to create, manifest and achieve your goals in 2013: the Goal Matrix. Unlike New Year’s resolutions that are forgotten by the end of January, the Goal Matrix creates a plan of action to keep you on track throughout the year.

Step one: visualizationVisualizing is first step in the process of designing your Goal Matrix and the most vital to success. Describe in detail what you want to manifest this year — see it, feel it and hear it. You must become what it is that you want so there is no separation between you and your goal.

Write your goals in present time or past tense as if already mani-fested. Words have power. Every word, thought and emotion is an energetic wave that moves from your heart center to create your life experiences. Choose your words carefully, rewrite wimpy words and phrases (like I wish, I want, I will have and I’m going to have) into power statements (I am, I create and I live). Make your goals positive and powerful! I now live an abundant and healthy life. I am now happy, prosperous and joyful. I create harmony in my life and work.

Step two: list 5-10 specific actionsAfter visualizing your goal, write down five or ten specific actions you can take to support it. For instance, if you want to get more exercise, like daily walking, then the actions might include buying good walking shoes and making a list of exercise buddies to work out with.

Step three: what stops you?Evaluate your goal plan to identify any blocks. Cold weather might derail your daily walking exercise if you don’t like going outside when the temperatures drop. Create an alternative that keeps you

moving forward, such as walking at the mall or buying an exercise video to use at home.

Be honest with yourself. If you hate walking, but your goal is daily exercise, find a substitute you’d enjoy, such as swimming at the Y, practicing yoga or taking a dance class with friends.

Step four: 5-10 actions List five to ten things you can do now to achieve your goals in 2013. Select a starting date to take the first step toward completion. Set positive intentions and remember that your intention, atten-tion and expectation must be in alignment. If your intention is to get healthier this year and your attention is on watching hours of television, obviously it won’t work. Or, if your intention is to get healthier, your attention is on exercise and your expectation is that nothing will change for you, the goal is lost.

Step five: Celebrate success! How will you know you’ve succeeded? How do you recognize success? Do you hold off until a goal is complete? Or celebrate in increments along the way?

Enjoy your progress. Celebrate daily. Make it special and do something you’ve never done before. Use your birth date each month as a day to discover and experience something new and exciting.

Themes for the 2013Give your year and Goal Matrix a theme, including music. My theme for 2013 is joyful success! Celebrate yourself and the wonder that you are. And, make 2013 your best year ever!

Which of these fears do you have? These are the core fears of you holding yourself back from your potential and your dreams. The key step in moving beyond these fears is to begin to verbalize and name these fears; otherwise they operate unconsciously and keep you stuck.

Many times these fears are operating below the surface and you feel stuck, but you don’t know the exact root of the fear. When you have these fears it means you are operating from your conditioned self and not from your authentic self.

Your authentic self is rooted in faith, love and a desire for full expression of who you are and your potential. The more you line up with the love, power and faith of your authentic self, the more powerfully you will be able to manifest the sweetest, most magnif-icent visions for your life and your holistic business.

Yamuna Body rolling™ is a revolutionary ap-proach to health and fitness using balls designed exclusively for this practice. It consists of a series of routines using 6 to 10-inch balls. Unlike other ball exercises, YBr goes far beyond random move-ment and stretch. It allows you to work specific muscles in detail, to create suppleness in tight ar-eas and optimize range of motion. Yamuna Body rolling™ re-educates muscles and stimulates bone, creating positive, permanent changes in the body. the ball moves along muscles to stretch them, dislodge tension and discomfort, increase blood flow, and promote healing.

Lying over the ball, you literally roll your body out almost like dough, stretching and elongat-ing your muscles. the YBr routines follow spe-cific sequences that match the body’s own logic and order. starting where each muscle begins, at its origin, you roll toward where it attaches to the point called its insertion. Whether you’re young or old, a fitness buff or a couch potato, rolling with a YBr Ball can help you feel better, more vibrant, more alive! You’ll have a ball ton-ing, strengthening and realigning your body. Fee: $90. please pre-register. the Chakra House, 664 W. Washington ave., madison, 608.237.6128, www.thechakrahouse.com.
