Naturopaths Without Borders: Who we are, where we’re going.Naturopaths Without Borders is a non-profit organization (501c3 pending) and a registered trademark in the state of Arizona.
A History
Naturopaths Without Borders began as a weekly spanish language club, Club Médico, at Southwest College of Natural Medicine (SCNM) in Tempe, Arizona in 2004. The students were passionate about connecting to their patients and r e c o g n i z e d t h a t c u l t u r a l a n d language barriers may prevent them from reaching populations that would benefit from naturopathic medicine.
The dedicated students of Club M é d i c o h a v e s i n c e b e c o m e Naturopaths Without Borders (NWB). Under this new name NWB began reaching out to their community by o rgan i z ing loca l natu ropath ic outreach and education projects.
In 2006 projects expanded to inc lude in te r nat iona l med ica l brigades. In 5 years NWB has sent naturopathic students, doctors, and volunteers to support communities and organizations around the world. Our most well known brigade occurs at our monthly clinic in Puerto Penesco, Mexico, providing free medical care to patients who may otherwise go without.
The Future In 2010 NWB began an expansion project that sought to broaden invo lvement o f a l l Counc i l o f Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME) approved Naturopathic Medical Schools. Since the project’s inception active NWB chapters have been established at Bastyr University (2010), National College of Natural

SCNM, Tempe, AZ., USA
Known as the “Rocky Point Trip”, NWB volunteers continue to do great work with monthly medical brigades to Puerto Penesco, Mexico, just four hours south of Tempe, Arizona. In partnership with New Birth Mexican Mission, NWB has served thousands of patients through this project. On average NWB serves 30-50 patients per day, each month.
NWB-SCNM’s primary outreach is Rocky Point. In the past this chapter has focused on public health education, holding nutritional information booths at local elementary schools and nutrition presentations at the Phoenix area Juvenile Detention Facility.
NWB-SCNM continuously fundraises through their NWB Wrist Bands ($2).

BASTYR UNIVERSITY, Seattle, WA., USA
During their inaugural year (2010-11) NWB-Bastyr organized an outreach with MamaBaby Haiti, in Cap Haitien, Haiti, spending two weeks working with naturopathic doctors to provide naturopathic health care and midwifery services to men, women, and children. While in Haiti NWB-Bastyr worked with a local orphanage to create a community garden.
During this first year NWB-Bastyr partnered with Alternative Health Access Campaign (AHAC), a non-profit organization that seeks to provide naturopathic medical services to Seattle’s homeless.
This year, NWB-Bastyr wants to continue their work with AHAC and is partnering with Naturopathic Medicine for Global Health (NMGH) for a Spring brigade to Guatemala.

NCNM, Portland, OR., USA
NWB-NCNM is the newest student chapter. They have hit the ground running and have overwhelming interest and support from the students and faculty.
Currently they are looking to partner with a Portland-area organization to provide naturopathic medical services to Portland’s most in-need.
NWB-NCNM is partnering with Naturopathic Global Health (NMGH) to send 12 students to Guatemala in March. They are expected to send a naturopathic medical brigade to India in the summer of 2012, working with Nature Quest India to provide naturopathic and ayurvedic medical services to families in rural India.

Naturopathic Medicine (2011), and Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (2011). Each chapter stays true to the NWB mission by contributing to their local community as well as global health initiatives and brigades.
The enthusiasm and support for NWB experienced in 2011 has given new fire to the NWB cause and will strongly bring NWB into 2012. In 2012 NWB seeks to open our first permanent clinic where naturopathic doctors and volunteers will work to foster community through naturopathic medicine and sustainable resources.
Until this clinic is open to volunteers we encourage naturopathic doctors and students to check out www.ndwb.org for ways to get involved locally with your nearest chapter and internationally with any of our ongoing brigades.
Past to PresentA letter from Dr. Sean X. Hesler
Having spent years developing Naturopaths Without Borders as a fledgling SCNM student organization, I am ELATED that we have 4 new student chapters. There is a burning desire for global health at the Naturopathic colleges, and our model serves students with regular meetings about various global health topics, fundraising, local activities, and trips to bring Naturopathic Medicine where it's needed around the world. There is much to be done to serve the 7 billion people on this planet and we need all the help we can get!
