the Captain John smith Chesapeake national historic trail and Chesapeake Bay interpretive Buoy system401-267-9857 / The nation’s first water-based National Historic Trail, The John Smith Trail is administered by the Secretary of the Interior in coordination with the Chesapeake Gateways Network and Chesapeake Bay Program. A network of water routes that covers approximately 3,000 miles extends along parts of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, DC. In addition to tracking the routes Captain John Smith traveled by boat, the trail highlights the natural history of the Bay. For more information visit nps.gov/cajo.
Civil War trail757-441-1852 / (Maps are available at VisitNorfolk, 232 E. Main Street). Norfolk is a participant in the Virginia Civil War Trails program, an effort that links more than 200 Civil War sites located throughout Virginia. Visitors can trace Norfolk’s Civil War heritage by following the Civil War Trails around the City. Sites include Fort Norfolk, the historic Freemason Street District, and the West Point Memorial in West Point Cemetery – one of the South’s only commemorations of African-American veterans of the Civil War and Spanish American War. For more information call 1.888.CIVILWAR or visit civilwartrails.org.
Downtown norfolk Dog Walk (B-3) Located next door to 400 Granby Street, the Downtown Norfolk Dog Walk was opened in response to the city’s growing pet population. The miniature dog park was created for Downtown’s furry residents with the help of Marathon Development in partnership with the City of Norfolk and the Downtown Norfolk Council. With water on site and plenty of room to run in an enclosed area, Downtown’s dogs (and their humans) can enjoy the park every day from sunrise to sunset.
elizabeth river trail The 10.5 mile Elizabeth River Trail, which runs from Norfolk State University following the Elizabeth River northward to Terminal Boulevard, began with an abandoned railroad spur being transformed into a walking and bicycle trail. The Atlantic City Spur section of the trail neighbors the Midtown Tunnel and runs adjacent to Plum Point Park. The Trail can be accessed at various points along the Elizabeth River including Town Point Park, the end of Southampton Avenue near the Public Health Building, and at Claremont Avenue near Raleigh Avenue in West Ghent. The trail offers scenic views of the Elizabeth River and interpretive markers tell the history of the area and environment. For more information and a map of the complete trail, visit elizabethrivertrail.org.

aTTracTIons & enTerTaInmenTFort norfolk (C-1)801 Front Street – Fort Norfolk is the last remaining of 19 coastal forts authorized by President George Washington in 1794. It served the nation during the War of 1812 and American Civil War. The masonry walls and several buildings were constructed in 1810 in preparation for defense of the harbor during the War of 1812. It has been called the best preserved War of 1812 site in America. Admission is free and self-guided tours are allowed. Photo ID required. Visit historicforrest.com for more information.

Pagoda & oriental garden (C-3)Located on the waterfront in Freemason Harbor – The Marine Observation Tower, also known as the Taiwanese Pagoda, is the centerpiece for the tranquil garden. The tower was a 1989 gift to the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Norfolk honoring Taiwan’s trading ties with Virginia. The two-story pagoda, with Chinese architectural details and ornamentation, sits on the concrete foundation of an old molasses tank. It is a beautiful venue for weddings, receptions, and other events with catering provided by the popular waterfront restaurant. For more information visit pagodagarden.org.
the Plot (A-3) Located in the NEON District on Granby Street, The Plot is writing a new chapter for Downtown. This community gathering space is constructed of materials reclaimed from the site and other City sources and has been made possible thanks to countless volunteer hours and generous sponsors. The Plot celebrates the community effort to create a better Norfolk block by block. For more information or to book an event at The Plot, visit DowntownNorfolk.org.
Plum Point ParkLocated on five acres of land on Norfolk’s urban waterfront, Plum Point Park was created in collaboration with the Elizabeth River Project, a grassroots environmental organization, as a site for environmental restoration. TOWN POINT PARK DOWNTOWN NORFOLK, VA . WATERFRONT
town Point Park (D-3) Waterside Drive along the Elizabeth River - This beautiful waterfront park is anchored at both ends with attractive fountains. The TowneBank fountain is designed as an interactive fountain for kids of all ages! With a field of 28 water spray jets, reaching heights of 12ft, the fountain creates a fun atmosphere for water play, and the fountain plaza is complemented by lighting for evening programs. The North Gate fountain, located adjacent to the Decker Half Moone Center, features a Norfolk mermaid sculpture set within fountains of water, and surrounded by a seating wall for public enjoyment. A variety of public art elements are placed throughout the park, including the Armed Forces Memorial, the Homecoming statue, a restored 19th century cannon retrieved from the river, a large Navy anchor, and a new installation of tiled images capturing Norfolk’s military and maritime past. To view an event calendar for the Park, visit festevents.org.

mile markersDowntown Norfolk touts two “Zero Points,” also known as Mile Markers.
elizabeth river Waterway (D-3)In the middle of the Elizabeth River, just off Town Point Park is “Zero Point” on the famous Intercoastal Waterway. Cruising boaters often referred to as “Snow Birds” measure their transit to or from the warm Floridian waters using this reference.
MacArthur Memorial (C-4)The second “Zero Point” sits at the corner of Bank Street and City Hall Avenue and marks the place from which all distances to and from Norfolk are measured.
public artYou’ll find a variety of works of art throughout Downtown Norfolk and the NEON District. Some are boldly displayed on main thoroughfares while others are like a hidden jewel, quietly tucked away. Look for them. Many of the works can be viewed on the City of Norfolk’s public art website, norfolkpublicart.org. Find more details about each work on DowntownNorfolk.org.

A Message from the President Don’t you just love Downtown Norfolk? Not only are we the cultural center of the region, with stellar museums, the beautiful NEON District, and an ever-growing list of entertainment options, but we are also home to innovative concepts in shopping, education, and office space, including Selden Market’s retail incubator, NSU and ODU’s Innovation Centers, and plenty of new co-working spaces. Add to that our amazing restaurants and a breathtaking and accessible waterfront, and we’re pretty sure you’ll never want to leave.
With all of these amazing things to see and do, we thought you could use a little help finding it all. Each year, we print the Downtown Guide to do just that and to help you plan every visit to Downtown Norfolk.
Downtown Norfolk Council (DNC) was founded in 1979, and today we are proud to boast nearly 400 business and individual members with a vested interest in Downtown Norfolk. All DNC members receive a complimentary listing in this guide.
Whether you are visiting for the first time or are one of our many friends and residents, we hope you will find this guide to be a helpful resource in planning your time with us in Downtown Norfolk. We think you will quickly discover why we are so in love with the place!
Sincerely,
Mary B. Miller, President and CEO, Downtown Norfolk Council
