But theMainland State teams started toarrive in big lorries laden withsailing crafts from the day beforeon Thursday, and the unloadingwas the hive of the activity forthe day. On Friday morning, 15teams from the States and privateclubs registered their participationin the races, which included twointernational teams from Pattaya,Thailand and Singapore.
The total number of participantswere 166 vying in the three Classesof sailing which are Optimist,Windsurfing and Lasers. Ninesailors who represented PSC wereYeoh Lai Hoon, Sweet Star Moon,Mohd. Nasim, Hazim Ismail,Katherine Ong, Low Yee May,Ivan Low, Levy Cheang and MohdShah.
The first race was officially startedby YB Puan Lydia Ong at thestarting line in the sea. The windcondition was good, making foran exciting race for all participants,as evident from the way they werehandling their crafts against thestrong wind.
YB Puan Lydia Ong was verysupportive of the Regatta and hadassured that this Regatta shouldbe entered in the Annual StateEvents Calendar.
On the second day, with the winddropping, it was only possible tohave the 2nd race at around3.00pm when the wind finallypick up. The race finished justbefore the wind died down, andwith no more wind to sail backto the shore, the boats had to betowed.
On the third afternoon, all thesailors went out in the sea andwaited for the wind to blow, butwith no wind to start the race, the Race Officials called-off therace and the boats were towedto the shore.
That evening, at the ClosingCeremony, our Chief Minister,YAB Lim Guan Eng was presentat the invitation of the RegattaOrganizing Committee. In hisspeech, he stressed that aninternational event like oursshould have more internationalteams participating. He expressedhis wish to see at least 5international teams participatingat the Regatta next year. Prizesand medals were later presentedto all the winners of the two races.

12 I MAY/JUNE 2011
This year’s Patron’s Night, in conjunction with the TYT/PSC Golf Challengeheld on the same day, was themed “Old Shanghai”, but the competitionthat took place on the golf course was far from “old”!
President Dato Mahinder and members of the Committee first welcomedthe TYT and the Toh Puan at the Lobby area, pausing only for an officialphoto before Mrs Junie Cheah, wife of Vice President Allan Cheah, presented the bouquet of flowers to the Toh Puan. The evening wasalso graced by the newly arrived Indonesian Consul General and hiswife.
Once the dinner got started proper, the MC for the evening, Dato BoonlerSomchit got the whip cracking, and with his ubiquitous bald head, didnot fail to garner some laughter. The convivial mood continued throughoutthe evening amongst members and the TYT, fanned by the numerousChinese themed dance performances that reminded us of old China. The beautiful trio of singers from Chakora took turns to serenade theappreciative TYT and audience with their wide repertoire of English,Malay and Chinese songs. In particular, renditions of songs of Dato SitiNurhaliza elicited thunderous applause, prompting Dato Mahinder torequest for a Malay themed Patron’s Night next year.
Excitement was cleverly built up during the evening, first with theperformances and dances, then with a bit of lobbying for a fundraisingevent, followed by the announcement for the 5 best dressed ladies whoeach won a RM200 cash prize donated by Dato Mahinder. But the night’sbuzz of excitement (for the men at least) culminated in the announcementof the TYT/PSC golf challenge held earlier in the day.
A total of 78 players, headed respectively by TYT and Dato Mahinderbattled at each hole of the Mountain View Golf Resort for the covetedtrophy, and despite some very good individual results from the TYTteam members, the PSC team eventually managed to win by 34 points.Mr Steven Ooi, the organizing chairperson for the golf was delighted atthe results, and grinning from ear to ear, couldn’t resist teasing membersof the opposing team.
With the Golf Challenge and Patron’s Night being such a satisfying event, the TYT and Toh Puan took leave at 11.00pm, leaving the guests clutchingtheir lucky draw tickets in the hope of winning the grand prize of aSony videocamera donated by Club Treasurer, Mr Chan Kean Hin.

It was a truly enjoyable wine dinner with commendations from theattendees. Another wine dinner is in the pipeline featuring a guest chef, introducing a fresh and trendy wine dining experience.

DANCESPORT SECTION
I MAY/JUNE 2011 15
From Japan, we travelled to India, where Bollywood was well representedin a vibrant, colourful and rivetingperformance of the Belly Danceinstructor and her two back-up dancers.
The line dancers also played to thetheme of the evening, launching with‘Jai Ho’ from India, travelled to Chinawith ‘Semowah’, Thailand with ‘CuteThai Cha’, Korea with ‘Sorry, Sorry’,Japan with ‘Doors of Life’ and finally‘landed’ in Malaysia with ‘What UWaiting For’.
In between, everyone got up to dancethe perennial favourite ballroom dancessuch as the Cha cha, samba, and eventhe Taiwan Tango and Hong Kong Jive. The floor was full of beautiful andenergetic couples, and it was a sightto behold each time.
The DSS members are always gamefor theme dinners because it’s a greatopportunity to dress up, and this timewas no exception. The majority camein the ubiquitous Chinese cheongsamsand kebayas. But the best dressed ladyaward was given to Ms Chuah Li Sim,
who came in a delightful combinationof Indian Sari and Belly Dance outfitwith well-matched accessories.
The DSS Committee would like to saythat they have enjoyed organizing allthe theme dinners during the year. These would not have been possiblewithout the invaluable support of theDSS members and their friends. TheCommittee would like to record theirgratitude to all the members and hopethat the Section will continue to be alively and sociable facet of the PSC.
Dancing, in whatever style, is a formof expression. If you enjoy dancingyou will certainly be physically strongerand flexible, and may even lookyounger than your years. Anyone whois interested in moving to music shouldjoin the DSS.
As with all PSC functions, the F&B isthe sustenance factor; the Committeewould like to thank Keith and his team,Rahimi the décor artist, Ann, and GMEncik Abdul Rahman for their supportand participation.
The theme Mystical Orient came alive at thedinner and dance of the DanceSport Sectionon 2 April 2011. One hundred and thirtydiners filled the Multi-Purpose Hall, and theevening was graced by the Club PresidentDato Mahinder, as well as several MainCommittee members and their wives. In hisspeech, Dato Mahinder expressed delightto be present, although he lamented that itwas to be the last themed dinner organizedby the present DSS Committee. The Presidentand the Vice-President then very kindlycontributed to the ‘spirit’ of the party, forwhich we all cheered!
The MPH underwent a transformation forthat night, as it was so professionallydecorated with lanterns, yin-yang symbols, dragons and drapes. The entrance to thedance hall was framed by two stylizeddragons meeting in an arch, creating a trulyOriental ambience, and impressing all theguests who arrived.
Richard, the Chairman, kicked off the eveningwith a sweet rendition of ‘Within U Remain’amidst a fan dance by the Line Dance Divas. In keeping with the Oriental theme, therewere two dances performed by Japaneseladies; one was about the Sun GoddessAmaterasu who hid herself in a cave andplunged the world into darkness. The seconddance, called ‘Rising’ was performed to theShamisen music of the Yoshida Brothers, and the energetic modern interpretation ofboth music and dance enthralled theaudience. Many thanks to Emi Yamazaki,a.k.a Mrs KH Chan, our Club Treasurer’swife, who brought in the dancers for us.
he long awaited evening wasfinally here, as guests andcontestants from the PenangSports Club and Penang
Swimming Club were warmly greetedby the Karaoke Committee members.
The evening was well organized andthe contestants encountered littleproblems as they headed to the stageto impress the judges. Each contestantperformed their song marvelously: somedanced, some swayed, some emotionallyand some joyfully!
Our reigning champion and also theyoungest contestant, Ms Foo Xiao Qingave the other contestants a good runfor their money with a rendition ofBeyonce’s “Listen”.
Our Club Captain Lawrence Low, alsoa previous club champion, put his bestfoot forward with the song “My Way”.But unfortunately things didn’t turn outhis way as the best male and femalevocalist prizes were grabbed by Ms Jurinaand Dr Shankar, both from the PenangSports Club. Their songs were indeed
impressive, and both were deservingwinners.
A total of 12 contestants and 2 reservistson each side battled it out with sweatand tears. After two hours of competition, the results was finally revealed. On anindividual basis, we didn’t win the bestmale and female vocalist prizes, we didhowever, manage to win the BestShowmanship and Best Dressed Maletrophies. But with the final totals tallied,it was the talents of the PenangSwimming Club contestants that enabledus to keep the winning trophy!
The Sports Club Karaoke President good-naturedly ‘heckled’ us for ourperformances, and we responded withenthusiastic challenge for the final roundof interclub karaoke competition withSports Club to be held next year. Weare keen to make the grand trophy apermanent home in the Swimming Clubby winning for three years consecutively. So for those of you that did not comethis year, the event next year should notbe missed...
We’ll be practicing hard till then...
Now, we wish to apologise for thepostponement and announce that theAnnual Dinner and Dance will be nowbe held on 7 May 2011 at the MultiPurpose Hall, Level 14 at 7.00pm sharpinstead of 30 April 2011 due tounforeseen circumstances.
