President’sMessage

“Your Voice May Change the World - PSC”….

Firstly, thanks to those PSC Members who attended

the postponed AGM in July, and helping make the

AGM valid in accordance with our Club Rules. Many

of you will also have attended on the 26th June,

and to those who did, let me say that I empathise

with the frustration displayed by many members

on the day, and the fact that the AGM had to be

postponed, thus effectively putting the activities

of the Club back 3 weeks. The success of the July

AGM meant that decisions taken could be ratified, mistakes corrected and queries answered. Financial

Accounts for 2016 were approved, as were Budgets

for 2016-17, subject to some amendments. This is

what we wish for - “understand it, and get it done”.

Second, I would like to say it’s an honour to have

the opportunity to serve for another year as

your President. I am delighted in the confidence displayed by Club Members in myself and, most

importantly, the entire team of Committee

Members, as we constantly endeavour to meet

members’ expectations.

As we begin a new term, I take this opportunity

to remind everyone that in the forthcoming year,

we shall be focusing more on developing the Club

status, which has been stagnant for the past few

years. The development shall be from inside out,

with emphasis on strengthening, not just short

term, but also long term, both administration and

members’ facilities.

I would like to say it’s an honour to have the opportunity to serve for another year as your President.

We have a number of exciting programmes and events planned

for the coming term;

Club Administration

Concentrating on Club finances, Income and Expenditure.

Rules

• Amendments to eliminate ambiguity and misinterpretation.

• Renewal of Title for the Leasehold Land.

• Proposals for Planning and Development of Level 13.

• New Swimming Pool Project.

• New Facilities to increase revenue of the club.

• Stronger Maintenance, Security and Safety Teams.

• Introduction of “e-Technology” for Club Administration.

• Reviving Youth Categories.

Perhaps the most important component in the success of any

organization is its membership! PSC will continue to strive to

increase value for our membership in terms of creation of new

interests, thus helping cement members’ commitment to our Club.

It should be the mission of us all, not only as members of the

various committees, but as Club Members, to make every

individual feel comfortable and proud to be a part of our great

Club. For our part, as the Committee, we will continue to

maintain communication with members on all aspects. We aim

to continue increasing membership numbers and encouraging

those interested in becoming more involved in PSC to take the

next step. A major element in the future of our organization is

the dedication of volunteers, who are passionate about Club

affairs, and will assist in leading our Club into a new era.

Finally, on behalf of all members, I would like to express the

warmest welcome and thanks to Dato’ Seri Nazir Ariff Bin Mushir

Ariff, who has humbly accepted our invitation and appointment

as a Club Trustee. His abilities and experience will undoubtedly

bring added strength to our Club.

As I sign off here, I look forward to seeing and meeting numerous

members at the many Club and Section & Group Events this year.

Thank you.

Very truly yours,

Koay Lee, Kenny

President

The Nautilus l 3

Editor’s Note

I urge members to continue giving the Committee that support, so that we can move forward in solidarity.

Najieb AriffEditor

As we enter the second half of 2016, the recently

held 2016 AGM spells a new beginning for

the Committee, and allows us to continue,

uninterrupted, our work on behalf of the Club and

members. After a fragmented year, (due to the

controversy of the initial 2015 AGM), much of which

has been spent dealing with, what many consider,

inherited issues, the Committee has, to date,

managed to settle most of these issues and are

now well advanced in putting the Club back onto its

true path. A path of strength in unity and foresight.

Together, let’s “bury” the recent past and look

forward. As a member of the current Committee,

I offer a big “thank you” to all members, for the

support and encouragement received over the last

12, difficult, months. I urge members to continue giving the Committee that support, so that we can

move forward in solidarity.

Many Club Events are scheduled for this year. By the time you read this newsletter, our first Club Event, being the Mesra Raya Dinner, attended by the Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera, YB

Zairil Khir Johari, will have happened. For those

who attended, I trust that you had an enjoyable

evening, in support of what, I believe, is a worthy

cause. As a Club of some standing and reputation

in Penang, I believe that we should also, always see

ourselves and our Club as part of the community.

For future Club Events, please do check with PSC Reception for details.

Our Admin Office will also be sending SMS reminders to members.

Lastly, I would like to thank the Committee for

showing faith and confidence in appointing me as the Hon. Secretary for the term 2016-17, as well

as Editor of the Nautilus newsletter. This, my first “Editor’s Note”, should actually have reached you 3 weeks earlier. However, due to the unfortunate,

but necessary, postponement of the AGM from

26th June to 17th July, it was decided to defer

publication of this newsletter until after the AGM

“proper” on 17th July.

I hope that those who contribute articles, photos

etc to Nautilus will continue their support and that

the general membership will increasingly patronise

the Club.

“ We see our customers as invited guests to a party, and we are the host. It’s our job to make the customers experience a little bit better.

Johari Abdul JalilGeneral Manager

Warm greetings!

As some of you may already know, I was recently appointed General Manager of

Penang Swimming Club and I feel honoured to be given such an opportunity to

spearhead this prestigious club. My name is Johari, and I’m a Penangite, married

with 4 kids. I have been in the hospitality industry for almost 30 years and started as

a Busboy back in 1986 at Pan Pacific Resort Pangkor.

Through the years in the industry, I have been attached to Pan Pacific Group, Sheraton, Westin, Hilton, The Datai and my last position was as the General Manager

at Belum Rainforest Resort in Gerik, Perak.

I am here with a mission to ensure that all members will be given the best experience

at the club. To achieve this, I will ensure that all staff associates will be treated in a

professional manner and be well equipped with the proper tools, motivation and

training. I personally believe that “Happy Associates Will Lead to Happy Customers”.

To get all associates motivated and moving forward to achieve this, I will personally

help and look into the standard and quality of the service, food & beverage while

getting feedback from the members to further improve the members’ experience.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all our Muslim members and associates

“Selamat Hari Raya Aidil-Fitri”.

Thank you.

Club Happenings

On Sunday, 26th June 2016, at 10.28am (within the allotted time limit for

a quorum to be in situ), as Chairman/President, Mr. Kenny Koay Lee,

brought the Meeting to order, it was indicated to him that there could be a

discrepancy between the number of members registered for the AGM, and

those members “present in person” to actually form a quorum, as required

by Club Rule 33.

Although sufficient members had registered to form a quorum, the Chairman acknowledged the potential problem and requested the Club staff to

perform a “head count” of those members “present in person” in MPH (the

AGM venue).

At the conclusion of the “head count”, the staff reported that the number

“present in person” was some 31 short of the required quorum.

An as a matter of prudence, the Meeting is “adjourned” to a future date, (subsequently determined as 10.00am, Sunday 17th July 2016).

QUORUM DISCREPANCY LEADS TO POSTPONED CLUB AGM

The Chairman then stated, that as a matter of prudence, the

Meeting should be “adjourned” to a future date, (subsequently

determined as 10.00am, Sunday 17th July 2016). There then

followed several constructive and objective comments from

members from the floor, either agreeing with or questioning the decision to adjourn.

Finally, after those concerned members wishing to speak had

voiced their opinions, the Chairman re-iterated his decision to

adjourn, expressing his belief that it was the only and correct

course of action to follow.

The Nautilus l 9

Club Happenings

At 10.00am, it was announced that the required quorum had not been attained in

order to commence on time, and that, in accordance with Club Rule 33, there would

be a 30 minute delay, at which time, those eligible members present in person

would constitute a quorum.

At 10.30am, Chairman/President, Mr. Kenny Koay Lee, brought the Meeting to

order. His initial comments were a request for the members to conduct themselves

and partake in the meeting in a civilized and respectful manner befitting the Club. The Chairman then worked through the Agenda.

Minutes of the AGM – Held on 31st January 2016. Following discussion of one

required minor amendment the Minutes were confirmed by the members.

Following the required postponement on 26th June, the Club AGM took place on Sunday 17th July 2016.

style dinner of Malay cuisine was available, which included

such dishes as Ayam Masak Merah with Nasi Tomato, Kambing

and kueh delicacies.

When dinner was concluded, there was a break in the music

and dancing to allow for our President, Guest of Honour and

the approaching end of the function, and as the children left,

PASA Awards Ceremony

The PSC Swim Team recently participated in the most popular swim

meet in the Malaysian Swimming Calendar. This was the Second Leg of

the SportExcel/Milo/NSC/ASUM Junior Swimming Circuit.

This meet was held in Shah Alam over the weekend of 28th and 29th

of May 2016. As one of the smaller participating clubs, with only 23

swimmers, PSC achieved 4th position out of 34 nationwide clubs. This

position was obtained from both medal count and overall points gained

by the team.

From this Second Leg, we have 15 swimmers who have qualified for the Grand Final, which will be held in August.

The Head Coach – Tan Choo Heng – has introduced a new concept

of appointing a Team Captain for each meet. This is to enable and

encourage our swimmers to learn responsibility and interdependency

within the team. For Milo 2, our Team Captain was Lee Chia Chern, who

was given the responsibility of doing roll call and getting the team to

work together. Swimming is a unique sport in that swimmers compete

individually and as a team to win points. Every event that each swimmer competes in is important as points are contributed to the overall team

score, depending on the swimmers performance.

Much appreciation to our swimmers, Coaches, parents and committee

for a successful meet – it takes the hard work of many people to ensure

that our swim team continues to enjoy success. At the PASA Awards Ceremony, held on the 19th

of June 2016, Penang Swimming Club was awarded

trophies for the most points accumulated and most

gold medals won, out of all the swimming clubs

in Penang. We also had the following swimmers

awarded the “Best Swimmer in their Age Groups”:

• Yoo Zhi Qian

• Lee Chia Chern

• Clarissa Cheam

• Jesselyn Lim

• Jolene Lim

• Josh Duncan Kung At the 5th Asian Schools Swimming

Championships, held in Palembang,

Indonesia, 24th - 30th May 2016, Elynn Tan won bronze medals in both the 50m

and 100m freestyle. The Asia Swimming

Federation organizes this swim meet

and only the top swimmers from schools

in Asia are eligible to compete.

Congratulations to all our swimmers! Keep

training hard and perfecting the stroke!

With only 23 swimmers, PSC achieved 4th position out of 34 nationwide clubs in the Malaysian Swimming Calendar.

There are any number of good reasons to make the Plane(s)-

Bus-Banca trip to go diving at Malapascua: a lovely island thirty minutes by boat from the northern tip of Cebu in the

Philippines. One reason is, that in the six metre depth, the

rare and diminutive, but richly coloured Mandarinfish put on a nightly cabaret of dances above the coral, so to woo

the favours of the concubines. Another reason is the lovely

underwater coral gardens of Gato Island where White Tipped

Sharks lie resting in caves and Banded Sea Snakes abound.

There is the added attraction of Colggatam Island, looking

the picture-perfect vision of a tropical island, with white sand

and palm trees surrounded by a turquoise sea – whilst, below

this tranquil sea surface lies a “cliff-edge” that plunges far

deeper than we could ever explore. However, the best and

most exciting reason of all, and why we were awakening before

4am, at sea fully kitted before dawn and diving far off-shore

onto a mid-sea underwater shoal. There, to lie quietly in wait

at twenty-five metres depth. Waiting…..for the elusive oceanic Thresher Sharks to return from their overnight feeding. They

came, they stayed: we were elated.

Angling News

The first Onshore Fishing Competition for the new term commenced on the morning of 22nd May. 55 anglers came with

optimism and high expectations for good fishing, following the short break in angling activities, due to the end of the fiscal year. The day began with a calm sea and fine weather.

After an hour, as the tide changed, so did the weather. The sky

turned gloomy and the sea roared with a strong under-current.

For the latter part of the competition, anglers’ lines became

encrusted with baby mussels, as myriads of them drifted

shoreward, distracting the anglers. Many fishing lines became entangled, requiring them to be cut and replaced with new

ones.

Only 7 anglers managed to land a single fish (a record low yield in all the years of competition!)

Therefore, of the 19 prizes available, only 7 were awarded!

An Extraordinary General Meeting was called on 4th June 2016, for amendments to some of the Section Bye-Laws. The

meeting, scheduled to commence at 6.00pm was delayed until

7.00pm due to no quorum. 35 members signed the attendance

register for the EGM, and the required Bye-Law amendments were duly dealt with.

This year the 69th Annual Premier Knock-Out Inter-Club Team

Competition was held at the Youth & Sports Complex, near

Batu Uban, opposite USM, Penang. The event took place

over the 23rd & 24th April, with a total number of 9 teams

participating, which was one more than last year.

As experienced last year, there was initial difficulty in getting players to participate in this competitive event. However with

the help of our regular players, we managed to eventually

recruit some match play “rookies” to complete our team. The

team players representing our club consisted of Heng, Alvin

Lee, Jeffrey Peh, Victor Wong, Sunny Ng, Lim Thien Thien, Tan

Chee Keong and Donald Saik.

In the 1st Round we were again drawn against Chinese

Recreation Club – the Tournaments No 1 seeded team. This

was a tough draw, as CRC are a young but experienced team.

It came as no surprise that we lost to them, which resulted in us

being placed in Tier 2.

“ Although our Tennis Team performances this last year have not been all that would be desired, it has however been good exposure for some of the newer and less regular players to feel the competitive edge that accompanies match play.

There we up against Penang Sports Club “Black”,

and although we got off to a good start with Alvin &

Sunny winning the first point, we lost the remaining two matches, and therefore our chance to progress to the

“Plate Final”.

Darts News

T.N.C. Totally Surprise our Darters(Especially the Ladies !!!)

Another Away Match, and another early start for our Darters

on Sunday 8th May.

The sometimes scenic, though comparatively short trip to

Taiping, allowed us to arrive in good time for “brunch’, or for

the late risers….breakfast! With everyone having sampled

many of the food court delights and Taiping “specialities”, it

was onward to Taiping New Club (TNC) for our Match.

After driving into TNC Car Park, and surprising “security” with

our early arrival, our Darters disembarked. Those selected to

play took up residence in the Darts Room for much needed

practice, whilst non-players settled in at their’, now customary,

large corner table.

Eventually, the TNC Darters arrived, and after much backslapping and handshaking, the introductory speeches

began.

Having received prior hints from TNC that, being Mother’s Day,

special attention would be given to our female members, PSC

Darts Vice Captain, Michelle, was tasked with the formality of

exchanging mementos with the TNC officials.

Another surprise waiting to greet us, was the fact that TNC

had such a strong line up, that they were able to put two of

their most experienced and capable Darters (Ajit & Mogan)

into their “B” Team….An ominous sign !

The “A” and “B” Team Matches began, and with our usual

aplomb, both our Teams lost the opening Foursome. This was

followed by a break for high tea, and another surprise for our

ladies, being seated at a “Ladies Only” reserved table, with a

Mother’s Day cake as its centre piece.

Following high tea, and the resumption of the Match, it was

good news and bad news. As our “B” Team slid quickly and

inexorably further and further behind, recovery was visible

in the “A” Team. A Choo Singles victory, Choo & K C Kong

Doubles victory, and, most remarkable, from 1 leg down and

some 250 points behind in leg 2, Michelle managed to pull

off a “great escape” and record a 2 – 1 victory. Lady luck (on

Mother’s Day) was on our side…or so we thought! The sting

was in the TNC “tail”, and the last 3 matchups were loaded with

their best Darters. With Michelle, again performing heroics, in

her Doubles pairing with Michael, they managed to gain a

point in a 1 – 2 loss. Piao, in Singles faced the ever improving

and heavy scoring Sarat, and again managed to gain a hard

earned point in a 1 – 2 defeat. The final TNC pairing was their strongest yet, and they delivered the coup de grâce to our

chances by defeating our Doubles pairing of Piao & Tony 2 – 0.

So, a final result of TNC 9 - PSC 8. Close and unlucky, may be the surmised conclusion. However, the fact is, that without

sheer fight and determination by some of our Darters, we could have lost this Match by 10 – 5…..or even worse!

Our “B” team eventually succumbed to a 13 – 4 defeat, without

actually winning a single matchup. Despite this there were

some encouraging signs of improvement in certain players,

which may mean transfer to the “A” Team for our next Match.

An “A” Team that needs a shake up after three successive

defeats !

On behalf of our Darters, I thank our genial, courteous and

obliging hosts at TNC for the warm and comfortable hospitality

that they always afford us. I’m almost tempted to write that

“it’s a pleasure to lose to them”……………but I won’t !!

(Written in remembrance of K C Kong - who, I’m sure, would have wished us to keep things lighthearted & upbeat - he will be much missed)

After driving into TNC Car Park, and surprising “security” with our early arrival, our Darters disembarked.

Having received prior hints from TNC that, being Mother’s Day, special attention would be given to our female members, PSC Darts Vice Captain, Michelle, was tasked with the formality of exchanging mementos with the TNC officials.

Annual Dinner & Dance

Flashback:

Dance Sport News

Dance Sport Group

Fellowship Nite (Sunday, 19th June 2016)

The DanceSport Annual Dinner was re-branded as Fellowship

Nite and held at MPH II. As with previous annual dinners, this

function was free for all members of the DanceSport Group,

the one difference being, that this was a sit-down course

dinner.

About 90 members attended the function which began with

pre-dinner cocktails to break the ice for new members and

allow long standing members to renew old acquaintances.

DanceSport Chairman, Ang Lye Hin, gave a short, but warm,

welcoming speech, during which he introduced the newly

elected DSG Committee Members.

The Group volunteer Dance Coordinators then assumed

centre-stage to recount their experiences in their various

classes, as well as encouraging member’s attendance at such

classes. The Dance Coordinators are:-

• CHAN BOON HONG

• CHOO KEAN HIN• CHUAH LI SIM • IVEE LEE LAI HIANG• MA SHING YUAN• DATIN SRI MABEL TAY SIEW HWEI (representing Margaret Leong-Latin Solo Evening)

• STANLEY FONG KING HUN

Dinner was then served, while a strolling guitarist serenaded

the diners. The mixture of cocktails and camaraderie

generated such high spirits that the level and volume of

conversation increased, requiring the guitarist to equip himself

with a stage microphone. The DanceSport new members

were introduced during dinner, each being presented with a

“welcome token”. This was followed by party games and then

an impromptu singing session, performed by Richard Chung,

and then by Allan Aw, both accompanied by the guitarist.

As this function took place on ‘Father’s Day’, this gave

further cause for celebration. To commemorate, a “man-

size” cake was presented to the ‘fathers’, for a joint cake-

cutting ceremony, accompanied by the hit song from

yesteryear – “Oh My Papa”, which resulted in a sing-a-long

by the members.

This event succeeded due to the attendance of the members

and the organistion by Chairman Ang Lye Hin and the

DanceSport Committee. Members commented that perhaps it

should be considered on a bi-annual basis alternating between

an Annual Dinner and a Fellowship Nite. All good things must

come to an end, and diners went home happy that they had

re-connected with old friends and made new ones; exactly the

objective of the Fellowship Nite.

Aqua Zumba Sunset Pool Party By The Aerobics Group

Pilates With A Chair Workshop

ZUMBA...... even the word sounds exotic with its

Colombian roots. To those not in the know, Zumba

is a fitness program involving dance and aerobic moves. It’s quite easy to learn so they say, except

for people like me, with my two left feet. Some

moves are really insane! Hands going one side, legs

the other, and you’re moving forward and sideways

simultaneously. And here I am looking around,

everyone in the class is doing the same movements

in tune with the music.........except me..... so sad!

As if it’s not difficult enough already, the ladies wanted to have a class in the pool.....hence Aqua

Zumba was planned and “Zumba’ed” on Saturday

May 14. A group of 35 super fit ladies sashayed into the shallow end of our pool to the accompaniment of

loud Caribbean tunes thumping in the background.

Lisa, our Zumba instructor, was jumping, kicking and

swaying in a fine display of choreography. Oh ya, I forgot to mention, the instructor was at the pool

side on solid ground, and our 35 ladies were chest

deep in the pool, and exercising against the added

resistance from the water. Not so easy, eh!

When I saw the poster, ‘Pilates with Chair’, I thought

‘how tough can it be?’ A chair is for sitting on, so

I’ll sit through the whole session. No problem. And

so, on the 24th of May I went.......like a lamb to the

slaughter!

As I walked into Level One Aerobics Room, it

was like a meeting room minus the usual tables,

with just chairs. So, in exhaustive preparation, I

selected a sturdy chair making sure it wouldn’t fail

under my weight, (a light 82kg), and joined the 30+

participants.

So there I was, sitting comfortably on my sturdy

chair waiting to start, when the instructor called

for us to lay out the mats in front of the chairs.

Apprehension kicked in as I thought ‘something is

just not right..........!’

A group of 35 super fit ladies sashayed into the shallow end of our pool to the accompaniment of loud Caribbean tunes thumping in the background.

Of course some moves, like bending forward and

touching ones toes, were not so enthusiastically

performed by the ladies in the pool. I believe it

had something to do with the “I’ve just had my hair

done” syndrome. Then came the jumping moves,

which had to be the “afraidmyoldswimsuitwillfailme”

syndrome.

Nevertheless, other club members enjoyed the

music and the spectacle being presented! I was

later told, the regular swimmers found they could

swim faster following the beat of the music and

wondered whether music could be provided at the

pool in future..... mmmmmm?

After any exercise the appetite is strong, and the

buffet spread was cleared in record time. First to

go was the salad, quickly followed by the spaghetti.

I managed to “secrete away” 5 mini crème brulee

before it was cleared. As I did not exercise in the

pool, I had to “rationalize” with one lady that the 5

mini cups were only really equal to a normal crème

brulee portion! Hehehehe. Sometimes I amaze

myself with my spontaneity, when it comes to food!

Interested in keeping fit? Then, what better way than to join the Aerobics Group!

(Written by Mr. Boey Taik Hin)

After a few warm up stretches and bends, the

session progressed to the more ‘exhilarating’ moves

including, “planking” from the chair, high kicks while

sitting on the chair, and the killer move of moving

your leg from left to right side while sitting facing

the backrest with both hands doing a salute! Those

ladies with long legs, no problem, but for me, well, a

major problem! Sit-ups and crunches came next; my

mat was soaked with cold sweat!

Some poses seem to defy gravity as we lay sideways

on the seat whilst doing side bends.

After the class, some ladies said it was an interesting

session, and that we should have it on a regular basis!

As for me......I cannot look at a chair without a cold

tingle of fear running down my spine.

Formed in 1865, and established in its current

premises in the District of Claymore in 1866, this

is one of Singapore’s oldest and prominent social

clubs. The name “Tanglin” possibly originates from

the Saraca (Tanglin) Tree, and to mark the 125th

anniversary, a Tanglin Tree was planted in the Club

grounds.

Historically, a centre of social life for successful

Europeans in Singapore, with a Club ballroom that,

in the 1930’s, boasted the reputation of the finest dance floor on the island.

During WW2, and before the fall of Singapore,

the Club was used as a convalescent post for the

Malayan Armed Service and an evacuee centre.

The Japanese occupation caused it to be used

temporarily as a Japanese Officers club.

Remember to take your “Introduction Card” – available from PSC admin/reception – and to contact the Club in advance to make your reservation, be it food and/or accommodation.

PSC Affiliated Clubs: THE TANGLIN CLUB – SINGAPORE

In the 150+ years since it was established by “forty good men

and true”, The Tanglin Club has grown into a truly multinational

club with over 7000 members covering over 40 nationalities.

This Club has a deserved reputation of prestige and quality

with excellent facilities. Synonymous with The Annual Tanglin

Ball, squash and tennis, the Club also offers “something for

everybody” from Balut to Snooker, from banquet functions in

the Raffles Room to intimate dining in the Tavern & Fireplace, in an atmosphere of relaxation, grace and charm.

The Tanglin Club website is well worth a visit, and this may very

well convince you to spend some time at this Club, when you

next visit Singapore.

Always remember to take your “Introduction Card” – available

from PSC admin/reception – and to contact the Club in advance

to make your reservation, be it food and/or accommodation.
