IPv6 a Foundation for Innovation• Key building blocks• Robust foundation for the creation improved net-centric
products and services• Robust foundation to create and improve existing net-
centric products and services– Ubiquitous Communications – need for a uniform
communications protocol that supports mobility and can handle a large number of devices
– VoIP/Multimedia Services - access content requires global access
– Social Networks require an Internet that is flexible and secure – Sensor Networks (e.g. monitoring systems) requires a flexible
platform that supports mobility, ad-hoc networking, security and a large number of simple devices.
– Product communities of interest require an infrastructure where all things can be connected and can rely on the network for that function

IPv6 Business Advantage• There is NO IPv6 business case. IPv6 is the new Internet Protocol
layer 3 plumbing for the Next Generation Networks (NGN) Internet evolution.
• But there is an IPv6 business “advantage” that will expand capability, which will enhance opportunity. A few of those below for discussion (there are others):– Use of globally routable addresses to expand network communications
beyond the view of private NAT'd networks. This cannot be easily done with IPv4.
– The option of true IP Layer end-to-end communications between two peers, without middle boxes or translation to foster new business innovation and growth.
– Seamless network connectivity for mobile clients (an emerging business opportunity). IPv6 enhancements to support stateless autoconfiguration and mobile IP roaming. This cannot be accommodated with IPv4 today.
– The cost of not deploying IPv6 could have significant impact on any business wanting to participate in the emerging NGN evolution

Global Mandates / Policy for IPv6• 3GPP mandated use of IPv6 for IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystems) 2000
– 3G IMS selected by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) as the Next Generation Networks (NGN) platform
• September 2000, the Japanese Prime Minister identified IPv6 as a critical part of the eJapan 2005 initiative.
• South Korean Government announced its support for IPv6 in Feb 2001• United States Department of Defense mandated the integration of IPv6 in
June 2003 to be ready by 2008. – In June 2005 the White House Office of Management (OMB) has set the
milestones that federal agencies must use IPv6 by June 2008 • European Space Agency declared its support to IPv6• Japanese Intelligent Transport System (ITS) project and the European
Car2Car consortium recommended exclusively use of IPv6 for its future Car2car applications
• Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-S) consortium decided to move to IPv6• Chinese government created and financially supports CNGI, an IPv6
backbone network designed to be the core of China’s Internet infrastructure • CENELEC has opted for IPv6 for the Smart home concept • GRID has adopted IPv6 in its Globus Toolkit 4• WIMAX forum relationship
