NAVAJO NATIONSCENIC BYWAYS
Experience a 4,500 foot elevation change as the flora and fauna shift from desert scrub to juniper, oak and aspens through the rosy colors of the Vermilion Cliffs. Cross the Navajo Bridge as it spans the Colorado River, which cuts through Marble Canyon. Watch for California condors, recently reintroduced to the area in an effort to raise their population.
Fredonia - Vermilion Cliffs Scenic Road Along Rt. 89A | Length: 82.0 mi
Though Navajo Mountain is not one of the four sacred mountains, the peak has been a sacred site to the Navajo, Hopi, Paiute, and other tribes since at least 8000 B.C. Along this byway you can see Lechee Rock, a 900-foot red butte, and Antelope Canyon, with its stunning striated layers of red rock.
Trail of the Ancients
This scenic road runs along Rt. 191 between the two little towns of Mexican Water at Rt. 160 and Many Farms, just north of Chinle, Arizona. It passes by striking buttes and mesas such as: Flat Mesa Rock, Round Rock (shown here), and Whale Rock. The land here resembles a dreamscape, or in some places the surface of Mars, with its red sandstone spires, giant buttes, and majestic stone mesas.
Tse’nikani (Flat Mesa Rock) Scenic Road Along Rt. 191 | Length: 48 miles
The Trail of the Ancients is a series of roads in the Four Corners area which represent the archaeological heartland of America. Chaco Canyon, at the center of these Trails, functioned as a ceremonial center for many ancient people between 850 and 1250 A.D. Visit other remarkable locations such as Shiprock, El Malpais National Monument, and El Morro National Monument.
Diné Biítah “Among the People” Scenic Road Along Rt. 12 & 64 | Length: 103 miles
Winding through the heart of Navajoland, from Window Rock (the Capitol of the Navajo Nation), to Canyon de Chelly National Monument, this road takes you to some of the most sacred spots in the Navajo Nation. Visit sites such as: the Navajo Code Talker Monument, Navajo Nation Museum, Zoo and Botanical Garden, St. Michael’s Historical Museum, and archaeological and historic spots in magnificent Canyon de Chelly.
Kayenta-Monument Valley Scenic Road Along Rt. 163 | Length: 27.7 mi
The landscape of Monument Valley may well be the most recognized of any stretch of geography in the United States. Featured in many famous films and photographs, the buttes and mesas are unmistakable rocky monoliths, with names such as Merrick Butte, The Mittens, Three Sisters, Totem Pole, and Yeibichei.
Naat’tsis’aan (Navajo Mountain) Scenic Road U.S. 98 | Length: 68 miles
Historic Route 66
This mythic road is populated with gorgeous shifting landscapes and pop iconography. Stop at a funky diner, take a snapshot with a dinosaur, or hang out on a corner in Winslow, Arizona with a statue of Don Henley and his shiny flat-bead Ford.
