NAVIGATING CHANGE
Rules to Create, Bend, and Maybe Break
Let’s Exercise Our CreativityLet’s draw a house, BUT
There are no “rules” about what the house ‘should’ look like.
You have 5 minutes…
How Did That Feel?
• Weird, right?
• Well when you don’t have rules….
That Exercise Was Us!• Our office was tiny relative to the
overall size of Temple-nine total full time staff
• Only two staff focused on employer relations
• It was a real “make it work” moment!
Meanwhile on Campus…• We weren’t trusted or seen as a valued
partner• Individual schools and colleges felt the
need to fill the vacuum• Results: eight other career services
functions with no University-wide coordination
So What Did We Do?
CHANGED EVERYTHING• Since March of 2014, we have:• Changed our reporting structure• Approved to hire nine more people,
completely overhaul our web site and create a new brand
• Charged with leading a campus wide career network
There’s a BIG but…• All of our ducks didn’t fall magically into
line• Recruiting policies were a particular
challenge, because…
There was NOTHING!

The Challenge Before Us
What Wasn’t Working
• No clear standards of approval
• No intentionality to recruiting activities
• No student accountability/education
Help us!
• NACE’s Principles and Standards helped us cover the basics
• More importantly, we needed to rebuild• Trust• Credibility• Value
Policy To Do’s• What to post/or not in our system, as well
as how to approve employers• A clear way to enforce student no shows
for On Campus Interviewing• Growing the amount of quality employers
on campus
Starting Our Journey Forward
Structure• Approving Employers and Positions• Especially those positions we were less than
excited about• Tabling on campus• Introducing standard On Campus
Interviewing practices-for the first time
Communication• Supporting and working with campus
partners
• Articulating our value online
What’s Ahead For Us?
Building Trust• Data
• Actions
• Communications
Growing Employer Relationships
• Finding the right employers for us• Representing ALL of Temple to all of the
region and beyond• Continuing to pave the way for smooth and
successful recruiting
Wish Us Luck!
