People’s Desire

Myanmar is home to various nationalraces, who have been living in unity andamity from time immemorial.

Learning experiences from theMyanmar history, Our Three Main NationalCauses – non-disintegration of the Union,non-disintegration of national consolidationand perpetuation of sovereignty – are thenational policy that all the citizens must upholdand safeguard as their ultimate desire.

With a nation or region with peace andstability prevailing, its political, economicand social conditions will be improving.

The State always prioritizes peace, stability and progress. It is also constantlystriving for the improvement of the economyand education of the national people. Asnational reconsolidation has been forged, therehave been more friendship and understandingamong the national brethren.

Paddy output is on the increase in theagriculture sector fundamental to the nationaleconomy. The State is manufacturingmachines and import-substitute items byestablishing industrial regions and zones. Thepeople are now enjoying fruits of developmentresulting from trading commodities.

Today, Myanmar is on the road todemocracy for building up a democraticnation. The making of the nation requires agigantic effort. All the national people aremarching towards the goal of democracyalong with already-achieved developmentfruits and national unity.

8 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Saturday, 13 November, 2010

The 2010 multiparty democracy generalelections have been completed successfully. Andthe Myanmar people have passed the fifth of theseven-step Road Map successfully.

The multiparty democracy general electionswere simultaneously held in States and Regionsnationwide on 7 November. All the polling stationsopened simultaneously at 6 am and the voters casttheir ballots earnestly. Election news was reportedon TV and in dailies and private journals. It washeartening to see that the people happily went topolling stations and cast their votes, enjoying thefirst ever voting right they got in 20 years.

The media featured the election imagescolourfully such as the polling station officer’sannouncement of the opening of polling stationsand the people lining up to vote, drawing up ballotpapers, choosing the candidates they liked insecret polling booths and putting their ballotpapers into the ballot boxes. When the time cameto close the polling stations in the evening, wefound arrangements were being made for thevoters assembling in the compound of pollingstations to be able to cast their votes before 4 pm.We also witnessed through media that in countingvotes after the closing of polling stations, voteswere being counted, checked and recorded in asystematic way in the presence of the pollingstation officers, responsible persons, members ofsubcommissions concerned, representativesappointed by Hluttaw candidates, the voters andthe observers.

Studying these facts, it can clearly be seenthat all necessary measures were taken in accordwith the election law and rules to ensure a freeand fair election as well as transparency and all-inclusiveness. Likewise, systematicarrangements were made in the media sector sothat the people could observe the real electionprocesses nationwide as if they were witnessingpersonally.

We saw ambassadors to Myanmar, chargesd’ affaires ai, resident representatives of UNagencies, members of Myanmar Foreign

Welcome and accept national victory cheerfully

Correspondents Club and journalists and reportersfrom local journals and magazines observing thecasting of the votes at the polling stations since themorning of the election day. All these arrangementswere made in order that both the nation and theinternational community could know the transparentand free and fair election of Myanmar, the activeparticipation of Myanmar people in electionprocesses, the expression of public desires and thesystematic election processes. In other words, wehave invited all to see to the acid test of theelections.

In so doing, authorities concerned with fullrespect invited all foreign diplomats and residentrepresentatives from UN agencies to observe the18 constituencies across the country. The USand EU diplomats refused to come with. Beforethe elections, there were various accusationsthat the elections would not be transparent, freeand fair without foreign observers. But again, the invitation was turned down. It was toodifficult to understand them.

In reality, the US and the EU are godfathersof democracy. Whatever place and whateverissue, they talk about democracy repeatedly. What’s more, they are always saying that theywant to see democracy flourishing in Myanmarand promote the democracy cause of Myanmar. In practice, they turned a blind eye to themultiparty general elections, the first steptowards democracy in Myanmar. It can beassumed that they failed to encourage thedemocracy cause and disrupt the systematicdemocratic process in Myanmar. It is sodisappointing.

To make matters worse, the statement ofPresident Obama was released from the WhiteHouse on the Myanmar election day. As usual, theymade one-sided accusations that the elections ofMyanmar would be window dressing. Besides, thestatements says that they will closely watchMyanmar in the post-election period by puttingpressure on and continuing engagements andsanctions against Myanmar. It is not strange that

western diplomats are making such accusationsbecause even the President himself of the worldpower is openly interfering in the internal affairsof other countries.

State Secretary Clinton also made astatement the same day, echoing her president’sstatement. Likewise, the committee of membersof parliament of European Union made astatement. It is crystal clear that the westernbloc is making attacks without any reason byslandering the Myanmar elections in whichthe person or party they favour did not takepart. They cannot see anything as long as theyare turning a blind eye to Myanmar’s purity, transparency, effort and success.

I would like to continue to say that thewestern diplomats not only received politicalparties and politicians frequently at theirembassies and residences but also visited theparty headquarters and the homes of thepoliticians. Moreover, they went to borderareas and held discussions with national raceparties and national race groups many times. They did not support the elections althoughthey took great interest in Myanmar’sdemocracy affairs. Their acts are not sensibleand reasonable.

Although the western diplomats failed torecognize the first step of Myanmardemocratization, diplomats of neighbouringcountries including ASEAN and other worldnations supported and recognized the aspirationsof Myanmar people for democratization byobserving the Myanmar democracy elections withfull of enthusiasm. They witnessed the realsituation of the elections. So all the diplomatswho observed the Myanmar elections praisedand recognized that Myanmar election wasfree and fair and it was held systematicallywith the massive participation of the entireMyanmar people who cast votes freely andactively in the elections and opened the door todemocracy in unison. Anyhow, we must begrateful to them for their support in the drivefor democratization process of the host country.

Despite the slanderous remarks onMyanmar elections by the western bloc, manyfriendly nations have witnessed the truth andmade a correct review. China, for example, welcomed Myanmar’s smooth multipartydemocracy general elections, saying that theelection was a vital part in its transition to anelected government, that smooth and successfulholding of the elections was a significant stepfor Myanmar, and that it is required torecognize and welcome the Myanmar elections.

Similarly, ASEAN welcomed theMyanmar elections. ASEAN Chair, Vietnam, issued a statement dated 8 November. Thestatement said ASEAN welcomes the (See page 9)

(from page 8)Myanmar elections held on 7 November as asignificant step ahead the implementation ofthe seven-step Road Map for Democracy.ASEAN encourages Myanmar to continue toaccelerate the process of national reconciliationand democratization for stability anddevelopment in the country. ASEAN alsostresses the need for Myanmar to continue towork together with ASEAN and the UN in thisprocess. ASEAN stands ready to assistMyanmar if required and in accordance withthe ASEAN Charter. It is obvious that theentire international community, a true friendwith correct view, stands on our side althoughthere were slanderous remarks made by thosewho did not want to rejoice at other’s success.

It is true that all Myanmar people are fullysatisfied with the elections. They enjoyed the rightto cast their votes freely in accord with their ownviews, convictions and wishes. They are lookingforwards to the time when names of representativesthey elected are announced. No one but theMyanmar people could understand how much theelections were free and fair and how systematicallyand truly they were held.

“When you don’t have it, you don’tmiss it. That’s what I say,” says thespunky 70-year-old grandmother, who’s as comfortable telling jokes atthe local pub as she is attending Masseach morning.

Technology isn’t really her thing. So, it’s a small miracle when Bassdrives, once a month, to her island’srural health center to sit down in frontof a wide-screen television. There, she and a handful of other islandersconnect by video conference with asimilar group in Charlevoix, Mich, atwo-hour ferry ride to the south andeast.

They chat. They laugh. They crytogether.

All of them have, or have had, cancer, Bass included. Hers startedwith a lump in her breast and has sincemetastasized to her bones, making hercancer treatable, but incurable, herdoctors tell her.

Fed officials voice concerns about bond buyingNEW YORK, 12 Nov— Three top Federal Reserve

officials on Monday voiced concerns about the centralbank's latest efforts to boost the economy, with onewarning the Fed's bond buying might need to be curbedto head-off inflation.

The remarks from Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, Dal-las Fed chief Richard Fisher and Thomas Hoenig of theKansas City Fed underscored the unease within the cen-tral bank about the decision to buy an additional $600billion in government debt. Last week's decision hassparked an unusually vocal public debate among Fedofficials and drawn the ire of many countries that saythe United States is deliberately pushing down the dol-lar.

Warsh raised the prospect that rising inflation riskscould prompt the central bank to scale back theprogramme even with unemployment still painfullyhigh.

“Policies should be altered if certain objectives aresatisfied, purported benefits disappoint, or potential risksthreaten to materialize,” Warsh said. “We haven't boughtourselves an eight month holiday. We bought ourselveseight months of hard work,” he said.—Internet

Mexican officials are preparing to remove the eight tigers andtwo jaguars kept by Jose Juarez Gil — or “Pepe Tiger” — saying theyare being kept in unsafe conditions, a charge denied by Juarez Gilwho says he loves the cats and lets them swim and run in his makeshiftanimal refuge on the road to Cancun’s Airport. He vowed onWednesday to fight their removal, saying he will appeal the latestseizure order. “Do you think I am going to just leave my whole lifebehind?” asked Juarez Gil. His surreal tale began in the 1980s, whenpolice started turning over to him tigers and jaguars seized from theprivate zoos of drug traffickers and other criminals. In the followingdecades, shopping malls and luxury apartments sprung up around hisland on the outskirts of Cancun, but he has stubbornly refused to giveup his animals or his property. Court appeals had allowed hisimprovised refuge to limp on, despite what authorities and US-basedgroups said were bad health and diet conditions for the big cats.
