INSG Meeting 6

Truth---Lateritic Nickel Ore Treating:
1 in Many Countries ---Most plants at mine sites
except: Japan, Ukraine, South Korea…
2 In China --- Plants far from mine sites
Products: Nickel Matte, NBM, NPI
No name( Ferro-Nickel? NPI? -----NBM)
Not counted as nickel metal production
Just mentioned in stainless steel statistics
Being called NPI sometimes

4 NBM Production in China

NBM Production in China:
* Produce 1 ton of NBM by smelting 7 Dry ton
(~10 metric ton) of lateritic nickel ore.
* Depends on Fe content.
* No requirement of P, S, Si and Mg for Ore.
Capacity of NBM Production in China:
* By 2015, capacity will be 10,000,000ton of
NBM, ~ 1,000,000ton of Ni metal.
Capacity of Stainless Steel in China:
* Capacity will be 110,000,000ton by 2015. 16

Water in Lateritic Nickel Ore:
Free moisture – 25%~40% (tested at 105ºC)
Fixed Water ---- 8%~10% (tested at 800ºC)
Normal non-ferrous metal trading condition:
FOB Price = F x LME x P x (1 – Moisture)
F = Factor for percentage of LME
P = Content of Ni in %
CFR Price = FOB Price + Freight
Trading in the Philippines and Indonesia:
CFR Price = [(F x LNE x P) + Freight ] x (1 – Moisture)
---- free water shipping cost paid by seller!!! 17

5 SOME TOPICS IN THE INDUSTRY

Import Calculation:
Import statistics in metric ton
Import Ni = Σ (Mi x Pi x 0.7) in ton
Customs tax charge by price
( Official data)
Transportation with problems:
The International Maritime Organization (IMO)
Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes
--- Rejection condition if moisture >35%
--- Some vessels are not controlled by IMO
Projects to reduce free moisture:
Cost, condition, …… 18

5 SOME TOPICS IN THE INDUSTRY

NBM good for stainless steel production:
NBM with Ni 6%~13% (<15%)
Good for 300 series stainless steel production
* Ni contents ~ 6%--9%:
* Examples: 1Cr18Ni5Mn8N or 0Cr21Ni6Mn9N
* if ore with Fe=13%, Ni=2.2%, then product
with ~85% of Fe and ~15% of Ni
* if ore with Fe=15%, Ni=2.0%, then product
with ~ 88%$ and ~11% of Ni
High recovery rate for Fe and Ni
(save resources of Fe and Ni)
No need to add iron for stainless steel production
(Save energy) 21
INSG Meeting
5 SOME TOPICS IN THE INDUSTRY

NBM production cost( per metric ton):
Electricity cost: 35 ~ 45%
Ore cost: ~ 35%
Other cost: 25 ~ 30%
Selling price: ~ 100% of Ni price, Fe for free
Excess capacity of NBM production:
Ni price --- balanced by market
Supply of ore --- uncertain
Stainless steel industry --- Economy ?
Policies in China --- Limited 22
