NC State English Department
Most students first become acquainted with the department in First-Year Writing courses, where they find focused, small-class instruction in composition and critical thinking. After the Freshman year, many students fulfill their General Humanities Requirement with an English class, others enroll in the various Professional Writing classes, while still others decide to major in English.
Undergraduate Courses
All courses carry three (3) hours of credit unless otherwise specified.
• English 100 Introduction to Academic Writing 200 literature class 300 Broad topics Ex: Early Twentieth-Century
Fiction, Screenwriting , and Intermediate Poetry Writing
400 Broad topics Ex: African-American Literature, Italian National Cinema, and Edit & Opin Writing
First-Year Writing Program
General Education Program (GEP) in Writing and Speaking, most NC State students will take either:
•(ENG 100) Introduction to Academic Writing•(ENG 101) Academic Writing and Research
writing courses in their first year, depending on the outcome of their self-assessment.
In the required first-year writing class, students are expected to write in a variety of genres that reflect the kinds of writing that are done in different academic disciplines.
Students are not expect to be familiar with these genres prior to taking the class:
Examples*annotated bibliographies * reviews of literature *research proposals *researched arguments * literary analyses
Ways to determine if you need first year writing
• You should complete the self-assessment--or-- • You are eligible to apply for exemption from the ENG 101 requirement by submitting a portfolio of your writing for faculty review--or--• You are exempt from ENG 101 based on the SAT, ACT, AP, or IB scores you submitted to NCSU

What I Have Learned
Taking this class has give me insight into what is to come when I go off to college.
I was able to learn that NC State has more to offer then I had thought before I did this project.
NC State has 12 different colleges representing all major academic disciplines such as: College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Veterinary Medicine College of Textiles College of Design College of Engineering
Criteria for Evaluation of Writing in English 100 and English 101
Regular Grading Scale and Grade Points
A grade of C- satisfies all "grade of C or better" prerequisites and other "C-wall" requirements.
A+ grades will contribute to the Grade Point Average up to a maximum of 4.000.
