Grape Varieties

The typs of grapes found in this state are as unique as the areas where they’re grown. Our diverse land-scapes include towering mountains, rolling hills and coastal plains, with soil as equally varied. This, combined with our mild winters, sets North Carolina up as an unrivaled wine destination that grows more major types of grapes than any other place on earth.

European Style (vitis vinifera)

Grapes of this traditional European species are reminiscent of those harvested in Europe and California. Wine examples include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier and Cabernet Franc.

Muscadines (vitis rotundifolia)

Native grapes of North Carolina, mus-cadines include the grape scupper-nong, which is usually green or bronz in color. Wines of these grapes are rich, full-flavored and very fruity. Pop-ular wine examples include Carlos, Magnolia, Nesbitt and Noble.

French-American Hybrids

Developed in France in the late 1800’s, these grapes are crosses between various vitis vinifera and native American species. They combine the disease resistance and winter hardiness of the American species with the classic flavors of the European vinifera species. Wine examples include Chambourcin, Seyval Blanc, Chardonel and Traminette.

Labrusca

Wines produced from grapes of this species, considered the American “bunch” grapes, offer intense, fruity flavors. Examples include Catawba, Concord, Delaware and Niagara.

Other Fruit Varieties

While the blends of grapes offer many great flavors, there are quite a few other fruits that offer a refreshing new taste. This includes wines vented from apples, blueberries, blackber-ries, peaches, plums, strawberries, cherries and honey.

The Mother Vine

Sip wine from the oldest culti-vated grapevine in America.

The Mothervine has been producing muscadine grapes — scuppernongs, to be exact — on what is now Roanoke Island since explorers first sighted it in 1584. In the following centuries, settlers planted cuttings from the vine to produce what are now more than 20 varieties that make both red and white wines. The 2-foot-thick trunk of the original vine winds along wood-en arbors that cover almost an acre of land.

The NC Quality Alliance is an initiative for the assurance of high quality NC Wines. Wines passing a rigorous sensory panel and lab analysis are able to display the ‘QA’ logo on their bottles so you know the wine you’re drinking is of high quality.
