Some Goings OnThe “Peace” in the sand is from Rachel Turnbow-Kieran and a great example of members photo art. Please keep up the great work everyone, and look through the rest of this issue for more wonderful photos.

Included in this issue are two photos from the months Pink Slipper Project donations. There were three but one seems to have slipped by without a photo. Thanks to Janice for running to the USPO and standing in line to mail the slippers and washcloths. And thanks to everyone who donates yarn, time and talents to help

You may have noticed a change in the way the ISS notices are posted on Facebook. The posts show times and altitude as well as the duration the ISS will be visible. Hopefully you’ll find it easy to read and I’d like some feedback as to your feelings on the posts.

Please know that you can tell me what direction you would like your character to go, and if you have story ideas that’s good too. Remember, you can’t do any major harm nor can you kill off another persons character.

Thanks for all the participation and keep up the great work!

“Did you know that the Black Falcon has several 20th and 21st century references? There was a comic book character, Marvel I believe, a super hero that fought with the Defenders and the Avengers.” Quentin was going on about all the Black Falcon comic book references. Halladay knew this would happen, ‘Quentin’s a comic book fanatic.’ Halladay thought. It was alright, Halladay didn’t mind as he was a history buff and knew references. He thought it was amusing that an ex-Q had an interest in 20th century comics.

“Of course there’s the bird from Australia.” Halladay added. “It’s called the Black Falcon, and it almost went extinct. It’s hard to believe that the people of that time were so careless with the worlds gifts. So careless.” Halladay shook his head and he walked. “It’s a beautiful black bird, big too. It has a wing span of about 100 cm. It’s considered a flying raptor.”

Quentin paused for a beat and then picked up his pace again.

“Do you think that the Utah Raptor and Australia’s flying raptor have anything to do with…” He paused.

Halladay picked up the thread. “I was just thinking that birds are descendants of dinosaurs. We have a tagged raptor and statue of a bird. Family members? Family that stretched out over millions and millions of years? Maybe we should be looking at avian descendants rather than something humanoid.”

“Well,” Quinten started, “dinosaurs were around for about 150,000,000 years all by there lonesome, then the bird descendants continue to this day, so can lets then extend

that family out to the Gorn or the Cardassians? The Gorn is a cold blooded reptiles, later dinosaurs were warm blooded.”

Halladay added, “Birds are warm blooded, maybe we need to exclude the Gorn, but there were those sitings other than Gnorts’ practical joke on Rox. Then there are the Aurelians which are a birdlike creature who have one of the largest and most comprehensive libraries of UFP history anywhere. Very peaceful, highly intelligent.” Halladay was running different species through his mind. “How about the dragons of Berengaria?”

The two men continued walking to the mess and kicking around ideas, but without proof all their suspicions were just words. Halladay thought, ‘Steve and I are going to be logging extra computer time.’ “Hey, Steve! We have some ideas to work on.” Steve Smith waved them over to his table.

“Ensign Sir, please.” Admiral T’Peira motioned for Sir to have a seat. “It seems that your talents have not gone unnoticed.” T’Peira took a seat behind her desk. “Lt. Commander Connie Smith is the ranking member of our medical division, and she has tapped you, Ensign, to take charge of Emergency Medical. You’ll be going on more away missions.” T’Peira leaned forward and spoke again. “Our upcoming mission to see if we can find the beings that so generously extended an invitation by way of a tagged raptor, to find them. I’m of the belief that you’ll be busy going through the Stargate.”

“Admiral, I appreciate Smith’s confidence and thank you for this opportunity. I’ll be pleased to take part in more away missions, especially through the Stargate.”

“Very well, report to Col Ral for briefing. Dismissed.”

Sir stood, nodded at the Admiral, and left her office. With the swooshing of the doors closing behind him Sir realized what an opportunity this was, and he steeled himself for what was to come. Emergency medicine could be tough, so as soon as he was finished with his briefing he was going to make sure he knew every species onboard.

******************

The crew of the USS Aarushi had put in a month of study time, while on rout to the destination planet, picking out Stargate addresses to try, working on the translation of the ‘tag’ from the raptor, and choosing a planet to orbit closer to the galactic center to try the gravity theory of Ensign Alyssa Clawson and Crewman Lenara Pren Rox. There was also the question had these dinosaurs evolved on Earth, or had they been transplanted here by another species?

As the ship approached the galactic center T’Peira gave the order for the ship to slow an enter orbit of a class M planet. “We’re close enough to give this a try.” T’Peira tapped a button on the arm of her chair and opened communication to the ship. “Attention crew of the USS Aarushi. This is your captain speaking. We’re entering orbit of a planet we feel will be both a safe distance from the galactic center but far enough in so that we’ll have the opportunity to test Ensign Clawson and Crewman Rox’s theory that the extra gravity of the black hole will allow us

to dial addresses on the Stargate that we’ve not been able to make contact with to date.” She paused, knowing that this was going to be dangerous to the away members. “Those of you assigned to the first away mission report to the gate room. Out.”

“Admiral, permission to leave the bridge.” Rear Admiral Quintessa looked to T’Peira. Quintessa was part of the first away mission.

“Permission granted, watch your back.” T’Peira told her old friend.

******************

“The Cytherians?” Fleet Captain Jeffery Beckstrom had made one of his sojourns to the bridge from engineering and was curious about where the Admiral had decided to park the ship.

“No,” T’Peira responded, “not that far, we don’t need anyplace exotic for our first try. And this is what you get for missing staff meetings.” T’Peira didn’t want to go too far too fast.

Beckstrom nodded, “You’re right we don’t want to ruffle the feathers of anyone from our future. And in my defense, I was out of commission. That vaccination Doc Smith gave me put me out! Wow!”

“That’s most unfortunate.” T’Peira then stood to look at the view screen, turned and spoke again. “Beckstrom, you have the bridge, I’ll be in the Gate room.”

With that the Admiral turned and disappeared through the doors into the turbo lift.

*****************

As the Admiral entered the Gate room she swept her eyes around and noticed the away team suited up and ready, Trebor Gnorts from Engineering was putting the finishing touches on the probe that was to be launched into the gate just as soon as the Admiral gave the go ahead.

“Everything satisfactory?” She spoke as her eyes swept the room again.

Each in their turn spoke to the CO and said, “Ready.”

“Very well then. Mr. Rox, enter the first address.” T’Peira nodded in the direction of the gate.

Crewman Lenara Pren Rox and Ensign Alyssa Clawson stood by the DHD that had been recovered from Caitlin’s home world. Rox entered the gate address they’d chosen from the list of those not yet successfully contacted. The gate came to life, noise seem to come from every inch of the walls of the shuttle bay where the gate was housed. Smoke formed in a ball at the front opening of the gate, then shot out across the room and fell back again to the gate, where a shimmering blue lake appeared vertically in front of the opening. The probe began its slow levitation forward and passed through the ‘lake’.

T’Peira and the rest of the crew in the gate room were a safe distance away watching a large screen, as the probe broke through on the other side and it was clear that this address was not habitable. Still, there was data to be retrieved and the probe went to work creating a star chart, then turned its attention to soil and landscapes. The away team stood ready even though it was clear they weren’t going to visit this planet. One could say that it was only this area of the planet that was uninhabitable, but the probe was unable to detect life molecules in the atmosphere. The view coming back was amazing and the team didn’t want to leave. It might take some time for Rox to find a class M planet for the team to pass through to, but the away team was not concerned about how long it took, they were willing to wait right here for a great deal of the day.

Two more addresses were dialed, two that they had never reached before, and both were similar to the first. They were dead worlds. Still, the exploration went just as Clawson and Rox had suggested it would. The slightly higher gravitational pull seemed to be giving them further reach with the gate.

Then it all broke loose. The red alert klaxon began and Beckstrom’s voice

Page 9: NCC-1642, STARFLEET, INC. CORRESPONDENCE SHIP...you’ll find it easy to read and I’d like some feedback as to your feelings on the posts. Please know that you can tell me what direction

came over the intercom. “Red alert, red alert, brace for impact!”

The crew throughout the ship was tossed aside as the USS Aarushi was hit!

T’Peira pulled herself to an intercom, hit the control button and with all the control she could muster contacted the bridge. “T’Peira here! Condition!”

“Not good Admiral! Three ships came out from behind the second moon, phasors blazing. They really got the drop on me. Sorry sir.” Beckstrom didn’t often take the captains chair because he was needed in engineering. ‘What a day to sit in the big seat.’ Beckstrom didn’t have time to ‘sigh’ after the thought. Shields were up, weapons were hot, returning fire, evasive maneuvers. ‘Thank the heavens around us that Vashi was covering for Clawson as pilot. They both have the instinct of warriors.’

“Man your battle stations.” T’Peira had not been informed of any hostilities in this area, and even though the Aarushi was far from home, she was in charted territory.

Ensign Sir was calculating the amount of injuries flooding into sick bay as he quick-stepped to his station, and Sir entered finding most of the medical staff injured. This area had taken one of the first hits. “Who’s in charge?” Sir asked of anyone listening over the red alert noise.

Connie Smith was picking herself up off the floor, holding her own broken arm. “That would be you. I’m out of service until you patch me up.”

Triage, have the walking wounded take care of themselves, scan for those that wont make it and attend to those that will. Connie knew it was a tough job, but no one gets into the medical field, especially in deep space, if they are weak at heart. Sir was running a regenerator over Connie’s arm until she stopped him. “A quick casting and I’ll be able to help out.” A quick cast it was, malleable and instant hardening. “Okay, let’s sort this out. More injured will be coming through those doors any minute.” ‘What I wouldn’t give for a hollo-doctor.’ Connie thought, but she knew she was a few years away from that luxury.

T’Peira entered the bridge and with one swift motion Beckstrom left the captain’s chair and T’Peira took over. “Report”. T’Peira stated with Vulcan calm that Beckstrom wished he’d feel.

“We took several hits before we got our shields up. Sorry about that.”

“Don’t apologize for what isn’t your fault. Condition now?”

“I’ve got the Aarushi hidden behind a moon of the third planet in this sector”. He gave the Admiral a rundown of what had been damaged and how long it would take for repairs.

T’Peira thought while Beckstrom spoke. ‘Very well, Stargate on hold. Find out who felt the Aarushi was a threat and why.’ T’Peira gave a mental ‘sigh’.
