INSIDE EVERY ISSUE DAWN DRUGE I feel like a bit like a roaming reporter this month so forgive me for jumping around during this month’s Presidential Notes: Lure Coursing - Kathy and I were invited to watch a lure coursing event which was held at the Solano County Junior College a few weeks ago. We had a great time watching the site hounds and some ter- riers chase down a white plastic bag with a mock tail tied to the end. I was surprised at how few people attended the event just the exhibitors themselves were there. Kathy and I had perfect seats, we were able to sit in our car and face the dogs as they came towards us chasing down the lure. I loved watching the larger breeds run full out with their ears flapping behind them and seeing the pure joy in their faces while they were allowed to run as they were bred to do. Very much like watching our dogs take to a cart or swim, it is so instinctive. The athleticism and speed was awesome to witness. One of the things we chatted about was watching the site hounds simply stop at the end of the race because the lure stopped moving. The site hounds just stood by the lure and waited for their owners to come and leash them. The Terriers being true Terriers were not going let the lure get away even it wasn’t moving. The Terriers wanted to get that lure and each other (don’t worry they were muzzled). I recom- mend if you ever get a chance to watch these athletes at a lure course event attend it for a few hours, it is fun and you too can cross this item off of my bucket list. Carting Seminar – NCNC’s first carting seminar was held earlier this month. We had a great turn out of beginners who attended Lori Littleford’s beginner’s session. Lori does a fantastic job getting the dogs handlers prepared to harness and hitch with a multitude of exercises. By the end of the seminar both Lori had all of the teams carting. Way to go Lori, yet another successful session! Marge Parsons and Rick Humphreys headed up the intermediate group. The intermediate group cov- ered, proper fit of the harness and hitch, right and left turns, backing up and tight turns. Thanks to Mar- ge and Rick this group left with tons of advice and were carting with greater confidence. John Pearson was the soul leader of the Test Prep session. John set up a very difficult mock maneu- vering course along with an obedience ring. John had 2 handlers and dogs he worked with. The han- dlers were given excellent coaching while attempting the very tight turns and close obstacles along with several intriguing distractions. I am hopeful we will see at least one of these teams enter and pass our upcoming draft test. Thanks to all of the volunteers who came to help make the seminar a success but most of all I would like to thank Walt Parsons for chairing the seminar and our instruc- tors, Marge Parsons, Lori Littleford, John Pearson and Rick Hum- phreys. We will be having our 2 nd seminar on February 11 th . I urge anyone who is interested in carting to enroll in the seminar and for those who simply are curi- ous please come and watch. WORKING DOG-FEBRUARY CARTING SEMINAR

BEGINNER’S RECAP FROM THE SEMINAR - BY LORI LITTLEFORD

BODY LANGUAGEYour dog will be looking at your body lan-guage for leadership and guidance so be sureyou are consistent. Stand up straight andmove with a purpose. Command with a firm, friendly tone and a period or exclamationpoint, never a question mark. Pick vocabularywhere one word equals one action. Decide toenforce each command BEFORE you give it.Reinforce command “X” by praising adding“good X”, Wonderful X”. Praise in a high pitch, happy voice. Initially treat attempts and moveto praising attempts and treating perfection.

CORRECT CARTING POSITIONThe use of heel in carting is discouraged because it willmess up your obedience heel and guarantee that theshafts jam into the back of your leg. Use a “with me” or“let’s go” or “hike”. Have several small treats in your lefthand, leash in your right. Use the treats to position yourdog at arm’s length equal to your pant seam or behindpant seam. Use about turns if your dog is not payingattention or blowing you off to bring them back into focuswith you. Praise your dog when he gets it right! Treatliberally (every 4-5 steps) during the movement. Eventu-ally add “stop”, or “halt”, or “whoa” command. Keep treat-ing during the movement but add a treat at the stop. Don’tlet them push your hand forward!

USE YOUR TRAINING SHAFTSStart with a PVC training shaft with or withoutthe handles removed. Two broom handlesalso work if you don’t have the shafts. Walkover the shafts to desensitize the dog. Oncehe’s comfortable walking over then stop withtwo feet in the shafts. Once he’s comfortableturn the shafts 90 degrees, remove the han-dles and get all four feet in. Next approach ata 90 or 180 degree angle and do a right turnor about turn so the dog ends up between theshafts.

HARNESSING YOUR DOGPlan to harness the same way every time, just like you’lldo at the test. “Get Dressed” for the collar and “Step” or“Paw” to step through are possible commands. There aredifferent types of harnesses that you can use. The Har-ness X-Back is what we use at the carting seminar. Thereis an excellent video on YouTube from Melissa Sharp ofNew Mexico Newfoundlands that goes over the basics. Each dog will need to be fit specifically, and it is up to thehandler to make sure the harness is fitted and sizedcorrectly. Dogs should NOT be allowed to play, jump, eliminate, or chew on their harness while in it. NCA alsohas a great page with an overview of draft work.

CORRECT CARTING POSITIONAfter harnessing your dog you can use a helper toprovide resistance so both you and your dog can learngood mechanics of pulling; allow the head to drop to allowgood body mechanics. After your dog is used to theweight and the noise add the training shafts. Two helpersare needed, one on the opposite side of the handler andone behind to carry the shafts. Walking together start offin a straight line until the dog gets used to the shafts thenadd wide, broad turns. Be prepared to “jackpot” your dogfor the moment when he is moving along nicely and easilywith you. Keep practicing!

Note: All dogs should be in proper condition priorto beginning draft work. The dog should be ableto handle 5-10x distance walking that you askhim to pull weight. Dogs under 1 year of age areencouraged to practice with no or little weight, unloaded carts or training wheels on HARDsurfaces only. Check with your breeder or vet ifyou have any concerns.

Hazel Jacoby, Treasurer

I had the privilege helping man the Health and Rescue and Educational booth at the Gold Gate Dog Show over this past weekend. Wefielded the usual questions with grace and I promise I did not roll my eyes when I was asked if the dogs were black Saint Bernards, swear! The best part of manning the booth was the view of our beautiful benching area. The booth was across from the bench whichallowed me to watch how the bench decorations brought everyone’s eye directly to the dogs. The decorations told the story of ourbreed with fishing nets, life rings, sea stars, and even the special flooring on the bench looked like a dock and the flooring on the flooritself looked like the sea. The pillars marking the entry into our benching area also looked like actual pillars one would see holding up areal dock. I was blown away and my description is not doing justice to all the care and consideration given to the decoration. Thanksfrom all of our club members to Summer Poris and Gina Bonnell for chairing the decoration of the bench. I know there were many oth-ers who assistance in this masterpiece and I want to also thank you for your time and effort, it was beautiful! Oh, did I mention NCNCbenching area won 1st place! MEETING NOTES FROM JANUARY 15TH GENERAL MEETINGNCNC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S MEETING:Called to order at 10:30 at Hazel Jacoby’s home in CastroValley. Present- Dawn Druge,Kevin Gallagher,Hazel Jacoby,JuneGibson,Lynne Baker, John Bonnell,Debbie Bridge,Rick Humphreys. No report from Pres,VP,Recording secretary, or directors,

Treasurer- Hazel reported the club has approximately $32,000.00. There is not much to report as it’s the beginning of the year.

Old Business- Hazel brought up the DMV renewals on the boats and trailers. She questioned to whom they should be sent. A discussionensued concerning the following: what we have and don’t have, trailers have a 5 yr, registration,of the three trailers we have one is theclub trailer, the others are boat trailers and we have two row boats. Linda Kennard has offered to take the boat/trailer from Pam Rubioand keep it at her home. Kevin will go to the DMV by the end of the month to finalize registration issues.

Corresponding secretary- June emailed NCA’s Charitable Trust and stated what NCNC will do for our donation. Previously it wasdecided that the club would have one item at our Regional raffle that all proceeds will go to Charitable Trust.

Website- Hazel would like to have her email as [email protected] She will also receive email addressed to the board.Michael needs to be informed of events, WD will send upcoming working events to him,all seminars will be on the website. A motionwas made (DB/KG) that all chairs are responsible for providing formation to the website and NewfsPaper,ie place ,event time, enrollmentform, need for volunteers etc. MSP UC

Picnic- Elisa and John Morozumi have reserved the Peppertree site at Vasona in San Jose for the June 15th picnic. Summer will workwith her on insurance issues. Elisa wanted to know what the charge should be, The boards discussion resulted in a motion (JG/JB) for2012 the picnic is free to all club members. The board approved to pay for park rental fee, meats and drinks. Budget will be up to $1000.Members will bring side dishes and be required to pre-register. UC

Dawn started a discussion on what is the purpose of Ways/Means for NCNC. It was felt it should support club functions,be a benefit tothe members, a source for logo items, educational and working items to encourage members to be active with their dogs. It was felt thatW/Ms chair would coordinate WD items, but not necessarily keep the equipment. Ways/Means in years past, function was to provideincome for the club /rescue. That is no longer a need. A modest profit is acceptable.

A motion (HJ/DB) The definition of Ways/Means- W/M’s consists of NCNC related logo apparel items and equipment to supporteducational and working activities. UCA second motion (HJ/KG) Working dog harness will be under the auspices of W/M’s UC

A motion was made (DB/RH) the Financial Policies and Procedures require if expenses exceed the budget the board must approve theexpense. UC

Education- Golden Gate Kennel club show is coming up last weekend in January, Lynne is seeking volunteers to work at the educationaltable.

Rick brought up a few items to clarify- Vouchers given to rescue families for seminars (one for draft and water), there is no income toWD. This is considered a donation by NCNC. Chairs of working dog events will sign all vouchers for that venue. His boat needs newoars. He will be speaking with the parks department this month for reservations for the fall water test and draft test.

An observer was injured at the draft seminar the previous day, tripping over shafts. A discussion took place concerning obtaininginformation about the incident and submitting to the board.MTA LB/KG UC at 11:59

GENERAL MEETING:Called to order at 13:00 a quorum was met. Minutes were approved as published WP/LL UC

Page 11: NCNCNEWFSPAPER on over to page 5 NEWFS PAPER

NCNC BOARD OF DIRECTORSMEETING NOTES FROM JANUARY 15TH GENERAL MEETING- CONTINUED

The board minutes were read and discussed. No report from Pres or VP

Treasurer- The end of year the club has $32.000. This is an increase of $2-$3000 a year. The working events have been successful andthe Regional was in the black.

Rescue- At the end of the year there were no dogs in rescue, at present time there are none.

Education-GG is in two weeks.

W/Ms- Debbie explained why the board made the motion that they did. Due to the internet we can’t compete for items, The fact that NH&Ris separate,NCNC doesn’t need to support them. The motion was for clarity, not to make decisions for W/Ms.There was discussion about desired items. Silk screening is very expensive which could make items more expensive than members arewilling to pay. Patty will look into items with the club logo.

Recognition- If any member would like to nominate someone for the Luise Parsons award send to Summer and the board.Summer asked to take the remaining VN Tapestries (paid for long ago) to the National and she would sell them in the consignment shop. There are approximately 200, she will take 50.A motion to sell them for $20 and $10 on the last day PJ/CB UC

New business- A motion was made JP/JG to write an incident report and have report forms available on the web,Pam Jackson started a discussion on why doing so is not in the best interest of the club. There is liability with a written report. A formshould not be on the website. An event report needs the event, date, time and people involv ed.The motion was amended by JP/LL that John Pearson will draft a report form. Motion passed UC.Issue will be discussed further at the February meeting.

Summer informed members that Golden Gate Kennel club would like NCNC to support a trophy at the dog show 2013. Because the showis an AKC event we can’t support the entry, however we can sponsor a trophy.Chairs of all events must contact Michael and Robin to put information on web and in Newfs Paper. This includes tests, seminars with thedates, times, place, registration form and the fact that people must pre register. There was discussion.

New board will pick an audit committee at the next meeting. Anyone interested contact the board,

SR seconded, There wasdiscussion on why NCNC shouldn’t do this,AKC sponsors health related issues in dogs, NCA has a considerable amount of moneycompared to NCNC etc. Pam Jackson called to stop discussion, a call for a vote on motion- donate $2000 to NCA donor advice fund.Motion failed. Lori Littleford /KG moved the club look at the amount of reserves the club has to be financially stable before we spend the
