All for each tinonee-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Principal – Karen Austin Term 4 Week 2 22 nd October, 2020 Hi Everyone, Last term, we had a parent survey from ‘Tell Them From Me’. The open, anonymous survey provides the opportunity for parents to provide feedback on school operations. I received one response. Thank you to the parent who completed the survey. Please let me hear your voice. It provides valuable information to assist in our forward planning. The survey closes tomorrow afternoon. Parent Survey link for our Tell Them from Me 2020 Survey http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/tinoneeps1 Intensive swimming will be commencing on 2 nd November. This is a great Lifeskill program which will help your child to become a better swimmer. The program is open to students in Years 2, 3 and 4 but is open to students in senior classes if you feel your child would benefit. Please remember to get notes and money in as soon as possible. Mrs Royan has been busily organising our Kinder Orientation for next year’s Kinders. Our first orientation day will be Wednesday 28 th October 9:00am to 11:00am. Parents are reminded that Kiss and Drop Zones will be in place. If you know of anyone who may not have been in contact with us yet, please let them know to contact the ladies in the office. Uncle Russ Saunders has completed a beautiful mural and it has been given a final protective coat. This is hanging next to our large fig tree in our playground. The mural will be the focal point of the yarning circle we are also installing. We can’t thank Uncle Russ enough for his exceptional knowledge and work on this project. I’m sure the students of Tinonee will benefit greatly from this for years to come. Please remember that my door is always open to students and parents/carers. If you have any concerns do not hesitate to either phone, email or call into the office and speak with me. I will endeavour to allay any areas of concern you or your child may be experiencing. School News

NSW Premier’s Debating Challenge 2020 Tinonee School participated in this year’s debating competition in a very different manner to the usual in person, face to face situation. The students debated against several teams from schools including Coopernook, Lake Cathie, Laurieton and all the way up to Aldavilla using Zoom meetings. The team took on the challenge, performed very professionally and finished a very creditable equal second in our zone. As the school will not progress to state finals, this term we have decided to do some introductory sessions for younger students to give them a taste of what debating is all about and to encourage participation in this traditional form of public speaking. Congratulations to Tessa (1st speaker), Leah (2nd speaker), Leighton and Darcey (3rd speakers) and Kody (4th speaker) on a wonderful effort in the 2020 competition.

Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Competition Several students who participate in the English Extension group each week placed entries in the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry competition last term. The optional theme was “We Used to Live There” or a different topic could be chosen if desired. Congratulations on a fine effort Emily, Nahlah, Leah, Rosie, Lily and Tessa. Certificates were presented to the students earlier this week. The NSW Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition Last term Tinonee School entered four students into the 2020 Multicultural Speaking Competition. After a selection process at school the following students were chosen to represent us; from Stage Three – Tyler and Tessa, and from Stage Two – Maggie and Madeline. The regional process for judging speakers in 2020 was altered to accommodate Covid restrictions and this meant sending a video of each speaker to the Arts Unit for adjudication. The unit was quite overwhelmed to receive over 2000 entries from around the state. Even though none of our speakers progressed to the state finals, we received very positive feedback from the adjudicator and our students can be very proud of their efforts. Tyler spoke about how we can learn from the past to prevent racism and judgement of people using Dr Karl as a great example, Tessa described ways of reversing racism through communication and building bridges between people, Maggie talked about the way in which words can hurt people and how we should not judge people and make them unhappy, and Madeline spoke about the famous girl from India who struggled against prejudice and was gravely injured. She pointed out the contrast between Malala’s experiences and her own positive experience at Tinonee School with multiculturalism, including activities such as working with Uncle Russ. Congratulations to all the students who tried out for the competition and especially those who represented us so well.

WORMS IN YEAR 6!!! Year 6 has got a worm farm and we are going to start composting and feeding our worms. We will be coming to classrooms at 10:45am each day to collect your food scraps from Crunch and Sip to feed to the worms. Our worms have been kindly donated by MidCoast Council. We greatly appreciate the donation. Oakley Worms like eating fruit scraps, vegetables, coffee grounds, egg shells and shredded paper. They also will eat citrus fruit skins, but only in small amounts. For example, mandarin and orange peel. We have put the worm farm at the back of our class room in the garden and we will make sure to water it daily and make sure the worms have a cold, damp environment. Brianna
