1. Feature Description, Integrity, Eligibility:

SITS# 32 DV

The feature, also known as Merryfield School, is a one room prairie school on a poured concrete basement. The hip roof of the main body, the pyramidal roof of the bell tower and gable roof of the entry are covered with wood shakes with metal capping, the peak capping has finials. There is a large red brick chimney on the west slope of the roof. The bell tower sits on the roof of the entry, the base is wood with four corner posts supporting the pyramidal roof. The openings are rounded at the top and there is a bell inside the tower as well as a flagpole on the peak. The entry roof is supported by three corbels, one at the peak and one each at the bottom edges of the roof over the entry door. The soffits are open. The building measures 32 1/2 feet east to west and 30 feet north to south with the entry measuring 12 feet north to south and 3 feet east to west.

There is a wide trim board on the exterior wall under the soffit on the peak end of the entry. The rest of the siding is 6 inch wood lap with metal corner caps. A concrete stoop leads to a 5 panel wood door with glass sidelights. Above the entry door is an opening that is boarded up. You step into a small landing, on the left side the stairway leads to the water filled basement and on the right side the steps lead up into the school room. All walls in this area are covered with beadboard. The school room has a mix of lathe and plaster and wallboard on the walls with picture railing trim. The ceiling has lathe and plaster. The floor is tongue and groove hardwood. The interior doors are varying sizes of 5 panel wood doors with narrow doors leading to the bathrooms. On the west wall there is a door in the south corner that leads into a kitchen. On the north half of the west wall there are two short coatroom hallways, on either side of a small counter for a wash basin, that lead into the bathrooms. There are 10 basement windows, all 2 pane glass, 4 south, 4 east and two north. On the northwest corner of the school building, there is a poured concrete cistern. Two down spouts hang on the east wall at either end and no sign of eaves troughs. There are five smaller double hung, multipane over single, windows - two either side of the entry and one on the north side near the west end - all to give light to the bathrooms and the kitchen. Three large double hung, multipane over single, windows are on the north wall and 5 similar windows on the east wall, all with framing and some glass. Blackboards run the entire length of the south wall and more on the west wall between the kitchen door and entry door. There is a basketball hoop on the south wall suggesting other uses for this building beyond use for a school. Light fixtures suggest electricity.
