Bruce McLaughlan, who played his collegiate rugby for Big Ten Champion Michigan State University, has adapted advanced training principles developed for elite athletes, including asymmetric resistance, Circular Strength Training and rapid active recovery techniques, to team sport. This "parallel pathways" approach helps to optimize each player’s athletic development, leading to subsequent improvement on the field. McLaughlan's rugby roots run deep: His father was an international, playing scrum half for Scotland and the British Army before becoming one of the founders of the Detroit Rugby Club. He passed his love of the game to his son, James, who also played at the collegiate level. His professional expertise lies in team-building and leadership. He maintains an international network of rugby professionals, sharing best practices in both sport and business.

A few years after college, a friend he met playing ran into a referee who used to officiate our college games and he was invited to a society meeting. His friend extended the invitation to him. They both thought it would be a great way to spend some time together and get back to being involved in rugby. And thus, his refereeing career started. After many years paying his dues and working his way up the ladder, he earned an opportunity to attend the national playoffs. After performing well, he was nominated in 2008 to the national referee focus panel and in 2010 was nominated to the National Panel. In September 2013, he was approached by Ed Todd and was asked if he would be interested in taking on the role as the Western Zone Development Manager. Marc welcomed the opportunity to become more involved in rugby at the managerial level. Since joining the high performance management team, he has presented at five national development camps and three LRO AGMs. His presentation style is to show referees the standard they want to achieve, and then draw out solutions as to how they can get the desired outcome. Within the past year, he has also taken on the responsibility for the USA Rugby communication equipment for match officials at national and international events.
