EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Overview

NEAD COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NPC, is a nonprofit organization with a dual mission: committed to

providing a platform for the inspiration and empowerment of a sustainable and progressive economic and

social development environment and to provide community development services that are constitutionally

sound and upholds the human rights of local communities. NEAD is the only organization in the Tafelsig area

in Mitchells Plain that provides registration education services for nonprofit organizations and small

businesses alike.

The notorious Tafelsig community is located in Mitchells Plain, part of the so-called Cape Flats of the Western

Cape. Ruled by different violent gangs such as the 26‟s, 27‟s 28‟s with more and more new gangs being

formed by young unemployed boys and girls, poverty is at the order of the day and children spend their days

scampering for food or collecting scrap to sell to be able to buy food instead of going to school. There is very

little if any official research about the problem but if conducted, research will confirm the high prevalence of

poverty, sexual violence, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse and HIV/AIDS in this neglected

community. Research will no doubt also expose lack of comprehensive programmes to address these social

problems as well as the absence of support services to persons whose lives are affected by these social

problems. By just visiting the local clinic, talking to community members and noticing the increasing number

of unfed children on the streets, it is clear that the Tafelsig community has reached point of complete apathy

where no one is willing to take charge and do something for themselves and the greater community. The

Cape Flats communities in the Western Cape of South Africa remains the most impoverished and vulnerable

group: job insecurity, cramped and poor housing conditions, isolation, illiteracy through early school

dropouts, play a role toward creating an environment that is susceptible to sexual violence, including drug

and alcohol abuse and HIV/AIDS. This contextual overview paints a bleak picture for youth in the community

and it is against this backdrop that the NEAD organization has started its youth leadership and job creation

programme in its aim to remove the barriers that restrict access to sustainable job opportunities for the

youth of Tafelsig.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF NEAD

NEAD offers a unique product and service. It is the only organization that provides registration education

services to nonprofits and small businesses in the area. NEAD has already started building a substantial

reputation as an organization that can deliver what it promises and aims to become the no 1 expert in

empowering communities to achieve their development dreams. Its social and economic missions make it

the only socially responsible organization in Tafelsig that builds its principles on providing community

development services that are constitutionally sound and upholds the human rights of local communities in

every aspect. The youth programmemes inspire young people to make better life decisions and touch many

aspects of their lives. To the youth participants, NEAD offers improved emotional well-being and the drive to

rise above their circumstances, provides a goal- oriented social structure (youth leadership development and

job creation), and helps improve self-esteem. An “I can do it” attitude pervades NEAD.

BUSINESS MODEL

The organization serves local communities in the Mitchells Plain area. The organization was founded to

address a number of challenges in the target community with a long-term vision to expand its work to other

local communities in South Africa. NEAD acknowledges the importance of building a support platform for

comprehensive community service delivery by co – creating various community based initiatives with other

sectors of industry:
