Oxoid – A brief history

• In mid 1800’s Mr. von Leibig concerned about malnutrition in Europe• Using left over cattle meat he began to produce a concentrated meat

extract for the masses.• Opened first factory in 1861, LEMCO Company registered in London in

1865. (Liebig Extract of Meat Company)• First LEMCO by-product was corned beef!• Second by-product for the English market was……..

Oxoid – A brief history

• In 1924, OXO Limited was formed to sell medical products to doctors

• In 1930 the famous OXO tower was built, the first form of advertising on the Thames.

• Outbreak of WW2 emphasised the importance of culture media for bacterial identification and treatment.

• In 1965 Oxoid was created as a sub of LEMCO.

• The company has since changed hands several times until in 2004 purchased by Fisher Scientific.

• Since merger of Thermo and Fisher, now part of ThermoFisher Scientific
