PRESIDENT’S LETTER
We had a very nice turnout at our September sectional in Allendale. I want to thank everyone who partici-
pated, but especially Marilyn Cavell and Susan Koster who worked so hard to ensure the success of the tourna-
ment.
I hope everyone is planning to attend the Reitman Team event on October 28. We would like to see some
more teams this year. If you haven't been to this event or even if you haven't played Swiss Teams before, this
looks to be a great time. Make your reservations and come play and enjoy the catered dinner largely subsi-
dized by the Unit.
We also have another sectional in Allendale scheduled for November 10-12, 2017. Lets make it a big suc-
cess!
Before you know it the Annual Dinner will be here on December 17 and my second term as President will
be coming to an end. I want thank all of the members who helped me and the Unit these past couple of years,
especially all of the Board members and committee members. Thank you. I'd also like to encourage more
people to participate. As a player you may not realize the amount of work required to keep all of the Unit
events coming, but we can always use another pair of hands. Even a couple hours a year assisting with one
event can really make a difference.
See you soon,
John Hogan

This ‘n That From Your District Director
I am pleased to report that our To-
ronto NABC was a success, with at-
tendance somewhat above estimates.
This is particularly welcome after dis-
appointing attendance in Orlando and
Kansas City. The tournament venue
received accolades for its spacious-
ness, lighting and accessibility, with
many food choices within walking
distance.
A number of new decisions were
made, including discontinuance of use
of the stop card and "skip bid" an-
nouncement, effective January 1
(although the requirement for the next
bidder to wait approximately ten sec-
onds remains); a reduction in fees paid
by the ACBL to the WBF; agreement
to work on restructure of the fall
NABC schedule to include a new
NABC knockout (which would apply
after San Diego); and a complete re-
write of the Code of Disciplinary
Regulations. Given the disappointing
attendance in Orlando last fall, the fall
2022 Orlando NABC was cancelled at
a cost of $80,000 and rescheduled for
Phoenix, Arizona.
Significant time was spent discuss-
ing Board interaction and procedures
to increase efficiency and effective-
ness. Joint task forces of the Board of
Directors and Board of Governors
have met extensively and reported on
many ideas focused on declining re-
gional attendance and greater involve-
ment with clubs and volunteers. CEO
Bahar Gidwani reported on his SWOT
(strengths, wins, opportunities and
threats) list demonstrating how effec-
tively he has "hit the ground running"
after 22 days in office. Earlier this
month, he had extensive phone con-
versations with directors, Board of
Governors' representatives, club man-
agers and other "stakeholders" - and
spent several hours meeting in person
with players in Toronto.
On the home front, we were
pleased with the 25 table increase over
last year at the Fairfield regional,
which would have been considerably
higher if not for a significant decline
in Sunday attendance. The revised
schedules and daily hospitality seem
to meet with the approval of our play-
ers, but we are still searching for ways
to reverse a general lower attendance
trend and we continue to seek more
volunteers for the many tasks neces-
sary to the success of the District and
our tournaments (please contact Dis-
trict President Debbie Wasik if you
are able to help).
Your district board is seeking op-
portunities to increase player involve-
ment and enjoyment of our game. Ef-
forts underway include the possibility
of non life master regionals, but we
can't undertake that and other initia-
tives without additional volunteers.
We thank you for your participation
and we look forward to seeing all of
you in Danbury.
