LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

For the Technical Program of the SEG International Exposition and Seventy-Third Annual Meeting in Dallas (October 26-31), 34 abstracts on the subject of near-surface geophysics (including geotechnical and environmental) were received before the deadline in April. These abstracts are being reviewed at the present time, and Vice-President Tom Dobecki and I will travel to the SEG Technical Meeting planning activities in Dallas May 21st to finish the job started in February when President-Elect Greg Baker went to the

first of the organizational meetings. This abstract response virtually assures us of being able to have four technical sessions as we did this past fall in Salt Lake City. While not surprised, I am delighted that our growing presence within the SEG membership was not ephemeral. With our paid membership up to 350 and our financial resources doubled by virtue of hosting last-year’s convention, we are postured for continued growth.

While on the subject of the upcoming convention, I want to inform all members who read this to seek out and inform geophysics students about our NSG Travel Grants that enable students to travel to the SEG Annual Meeting. I would hope that we can at least double the number of grants issued last year for travel to Salt Lake City. For information about our NSG Student Travel Grant Program (and much more information about NSG) go to our website at http://nsgs.seg.org/.

NEAR-SURFACE VIEWS

Near-Surface Views is created by the Near-Surface Geophysics Section of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists to convey information of common interest to people working in near-surface geophysics.

Past issues of the newsletter (in color) are available at http://nsgs.seg.org/.

To be effective, Near-Surface Views requires the contribution of information from a variety of sources. If you have an item to communicate to other members of the near-surface geophysics community, please send it to the Editor. All contributions are welcome. The Editor reserves the right to reject items that are felt to be too highly commercial or technically inappropriate.

ALL SUBMISSIONS SHOULD BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE EDITOR.

Submissions for the next newsletter should be sent by August 15th.

The NSG and EEGS are actively pursuing common areas of interest and cooperation. If any one has comments or ideas on areas of cooperation, please contact Steve Danbom at 713-937-7530 or [email protected].

Advances in Stratigraphic Analyses using GPR – Call for Papers – GSA’2003

Topical session Advances in Stratigraphic Analyses Using GPR (http://www.geosociety.org/meetings/2003/top12.htm#123) has been approved for the upcoming Geological Society of America Annual Meeting, November 2-5, 2003 in Seattle, WA

Session Description: The session (oral and poster) will cover a broad range of ground penetrating radar (GPR) studies related to stratigraphic analyses. Areas of study will include (but not limited to): (1) Hydrocarbon reservoir characterization, whether on actual reservoir rocks or analogs; (2) Environmental site characterization, where the development of facies models is used to make predictions on contaminant transport and/or fate; (3) Hydrogeophysics, including fracture characterization of aquifers; (4) Geological hazard analysis, including volcanogenic, seismic, or landslide related; and (5) Analyses of stratigraphic facies development, including aeolian, fluvial, glaciological, coastal (both lacustrine, and marine).

Along with the session, the organizers are currently setting the groundwork to convert the presented papers into a GSA Special Paper.

More information about the meeting is available online at: http://www.geosociety.org/meetings/2003/

Deadline for abstract submission is July 15, 2003. Abstract information and electronic submission can be completed online at http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2003AM/index.epl (Remember to submit via Topical Session 123)

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Gregory S. Baker, University at Buffalo, ([email protected]) or Harry M. Jol, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire ([email protected]).
