How do you demonstrate the board’scommitment to health and safety?

Many organisations struggle to translate health and safetyinto tangible actions and values by failing to ask the correctquestions from their management team or not reviewingsafety objectives and outcomes.

One way this is identified is by not challenging dialogueabout the development of safety therefore, not creatingsafety excellence throughout the organisation.

The boardroom sets the safety tone for any commercial settingHealth and safety at work applies to organisations of all sizes. It is thejob of senior managers to ensure health and safety remains at the topof the agenda, rolling out systems that are effectively implemented androbustly maintained. It’s about being able to demonstrate leadership ofhealth and safety governance and to ensure organisations maximisetheir performance and lead beyond mere compliance.

4 Steps to processing safety in the boardroomHealth and safety risk management is increasingly being seen as aboardroom governance function. Guidance from the Health and SafetyExecutive (HSE) and the Institute of Directors states that “the boardshould integrate health and safety into the main governance structures”.

1 A good process safety culture requires a positive, trusting and openenvironment.

2 There is no such thing as a perfect health and safety procedure, soyou should regularly and thoroughly evaluate your safety cultureand performance.

3 Communication is the basis of good business. If a process safetypolicy is important, let people know why.

4 Making profit is important, but safety is crucial. After all, a processwill be further delayed by an avoidable accident.

The HSE publishes annual statistics on health and safety in Great Britain. TheHealth and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain’s national regulator for workplacehealth and safety. The HSE aim to prevent work-related death, injury and ill healththrough regulatory actions that range from influencing behaviours across wholeindustry sectors through to targeted interventions on individual businesses.

Health and safety protections, and your duties to protect the health and safety ofpeople, will not change with Brexit. Whatever deal the UK leaves the EU with, or in theevent of no-deal, HSE’s approach to regulation is to preserve the UK’s high standardsin health and safety and to continue to protect people and the environment.

Health and safety statistics for 2018

If twenty-two and a half yearsin the forces taught meanything, it was about theimportance of preparation.Now as a trainer for RISK, I tryand explain that preparation isthe difference between successand failure in exams.Richard Parker – Warrant Officer ClassTwo (QMSI), Corps of Royal EngineersI served twenty two and a half years in theCorps of Royal Engineers, finishing mydistinguished career as a Warrant OfficerClass Two (QMSI). I finally left the army in1997 following my final tour as a PermanentStaff Instructor (PSI) with a Territorial ArmyRoyal Engineers Field Squadron (V).

The forces taught me to be prepared, soI prepared for Civvy StreetI think the thing which helped me most whencoming to terms with leaving the forces wasthat I knew exactly when my contract with themilitary would come to an end. UnderstandingI would be leaving meant I had to think aboutwhat I wanted to do after the army. I used thisto my advantage and prepared myself asmuch as I possibly could. I enrolled at acivilian college and gaining a managementand a teaching qualification which I knewwould be recognised in ‘Civvy Street’.

NEBOSH is one of the most respected andsought after qualifications for employers inthe health and safety sector. This canmean sacrificing time in the evening andweekends to study for your exams.

#2 – The cost of a NEBOSH qualificationNEBOSH qualifications are at the top end of thehealth and safety training courses scale. Thedanger is you think all course providers operatethe same way, but they don’t so choosecarefully and make sure you get the coursematerials within the course fees. Ask about theirpass rates and if they have a guaranteed passscheme. Saving a few pounds on the coursecosts could potentially limit your chances ofpassing if you choose the wrong provider.

#3 – The NEBOSH ExamYou will be required to take a number of writtenexams and a practical assignment. UnderstandingI would be leaving meant I had to think aboutwhat I wanted to do after the army. I used thisto my advantage and prepared myself asmuch as I possibly could. I enrolled at acivilian college and gaining a managementand a teaching qualification which I knewwould be recognised in ‘Civvy Street’.
