Children, they are the most honest speakingindividuals and they always amaze me with theirthoughts, actions, and crazy stories. A few weeks

ago, my daughter was going through her jackets and witha big smile pointed to one specific jacket and told me“That is my bull sale going coat.” It melted my heart andreminded me how my life is impacting her life. Our youngergenerations are the future for our Angus industry and I want to remind you that as amember you are helping us continue to educate, inform, and shape the industry forour younger generations. On the front cover you will see a little boy engaging withsome ranch mama cows. The hard work and passion of this little boys’ past/currentgenerations helped build this herd to show true Angus docility and the superiorquality this breed offers. This picture is worth a thousand words and I commend allour members on continuing to shape this industry for the future.

In September the Nebraska State Fair was held. Numbers were down this year, but the show still went on and was successful despite all the last-minute schedulechanges and COVID regulations. Premium money had been cut by the NebraskaState Fair to limit costs, so it was up to the breed Associations to cover prizes, awards, and premiums. The Association was able to provide Grand Championbanners and premium money to class winners. I want to thank those that donatedand competed this year in the Nebraska State Fair! It is you that helps keep this eventgoing for our future generations.

Following the State Fair, the Association held the annual Nebraska Angus Tour. The tour this year was an absolute success. Held in the Southwestern region ofNebraska with McCook as headquarters it allowed for lots of different opportunitiesand areas of agriculture to be explored. Check out pages 16-18 for a full photo recap. The Association and those who helped plan this event continue to get complimentson a very successful and memorable tour. Thank you to everyone that attended andhelped this year! We had all ages attend and it was great to see all the support for ourevent. Next year the tour is set to be held in the Northwestern/Panhandle region ofNebraska.

The event to round out the year for the Association will be the annual Meetingand Banquet. Information can be found on page 14. You will see that this year thereare some changes to the schedule. These changes were made to help accommodatethe speaker’s schedules, and help allow all adult and junior members to attend. TheAssociation is excited to provide to our members exceptional speakers including JoelCowley, President of Angus Genetics Inc., and Paul Dykstra, Assistant Director ofSupply Management & Analysis for Certified Angus Beef. Prior to the afternoonsession the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary will hold their annual meeting and groupactivity at Diva’s Floral shop located downtown Kearney starting at 11:00. Theyinvite all women Association members to join and have some fun making winterfloral arrangements and gain information on how they help shape our futureindustry for generations to come! For the evening banquet the Association will haveDirectory page auctions, crowning of the 2021 Nebraska Angus Queen, presentationof Producer of the Year, Heifer Scholarship winner recognitions, and the NebraskaJunior Angus Association semen auction. We look forward to this event this year forour members in Kearney and hope you all can come!

As I have stated throughout this column, we are shaping our industry for ouryounger generations. A while back a member shared a meme on Facebook that Iwanted to share with you. It read: To that one soulreading this. I know you’re tired. You’re fed up.You’re so close to breaking but there’s strengthwithin you even when you feel weak. Keepfighting!

Keep fighting for our future members!

Fellow Angus Breeders,

By: Danny Poss NAA President

The Nebraska Angus Tour, heldin the southwest area ofNebraska was one for the

record books. The tour began onFriday evening, in McCook, Nebraskaat the Coppermill Steakhouse. It wassuch a great evening to get out andvisit with so many good people in theAngus industry. While the meal wasfabulous, I also enjoyed the diversityof the panel discussion led by PatsyHoughton, and I appreciate all thework that went into the evening. Itwas a great kick off to a full day onSaturday. We toured many greatoperations, saw some intriguingcattle, ate a lot of amazing food, andhad countless conversations withAngus enthusiasts from Nebraska andother states. I know first-hand howmuch work it takes to pull off a tourstop. It’s more than just the cattle thatmakes the weekend worthwhile, andI’d have to say the wives of uscattlemen seem to make us and ouroperations look pretty darn good! So,to all of you who put countless hoursin to planning, organizing, andpulling off this exceptional tour, thankyou! To Margo, who connected thedots throughout the day, and Leviwho made sure nobody was leftbehind, we appreciated your sacrificesto make it an enjoyable tour. I amalready looking forward to next year!

For those of you who were unableto make the tour this year, Poss Anguswas delighted to donate the heifer forthe scholarship raffle. Congratulationsto this year’s winner, Doug Satree, from TX. Thank you to everyone whopurchased a raffle for such a greatcause. We all benefit when it comes tothe education of our future Angusmembers!

Right now, we are focused on themany changes happening around us.Calves are weaned, crops areharvested, female sales are underwayand bull sale preparation is in fullswing. As change continues aroundus, stay focused on the things you canchange and find peace in the thingsthat we cannot.

God bless,

Hope all is going well for you, your friends and loved ones, and your operation during

this crazy time!

The Association staff is to becommended for the way in which theyhave handled the challenges of theCOVID pandemic. When businessesacross the country were encouraged tohave employees work from home, thetalented folks at the Associationpulled out all the stops and put inlong hours to get everyone “set up” intheir homes so that the members couldcontinue to receive the services theydeserve and this was accomplishedwith little to no disruption.

I would also like to let everyoneknow that your American AngusAssociation Board is continuing tooperate as best we can during thistime.

The quarterly meeting that wasfirst affected by the pandemic was inJune. The meeting was to be held inKansas City/St. Joe. However, therewas a significant COVID outbreak inthe area at that time, so it was held viaZoom. We all agreed that in-personmeetings were preferable, but we werestill able to conduct a full boardmeeting and completed the businessbefore us.

Subsequent, and numerous, committee meetings were held byZoom, as well this summer. All in all,we were able to keep the importantbusiness of the Association moving for-ward in this manner.

In September, we had an in-personmeeting in St. Joe with appropriateDirected Health Measures in place. Wewere pleased with the results as wewere able to deal with: Long RangeObjectives, Genetic Evaluations,Research of Haplotypes InfluencingFertility, an Inventory-Based AHIROption, the Financial Status of theAssociation, and we also discussed therevised schedule of our upcomingAnnual Meeting in November.

As with many events across ourcountry this year, the Annual Meetingwill be held in a scaled down manner. The number of days and sessions hasbeen reduced, and folks will be able toparticipate virtually. We will still beable to elect five new Board membersat that time.

All the best to everyone, and if youever have any questions, feel free tocontact me.

Sincerely,

Jerry Connealy • AAA Director

Angus Juniors Enjoy a Trip to Camp Angus

NJAA members gathered for growth and fun atCamp Angus in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

In a typical year, Angus juniorsfrom across the nation would haveattended the annual Leaders

Engaged in Angus Development(LEAD) conference this summer. Dueto COVID-19 restrictions, the NationalJunior Angus Board (NJAB) and theEvents and Education department atthe American Angus Association®had to adapt this well-attended eventfrom its initial venue in Orlando,Florida. Camp Angus, hosted August4-6, 2020 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, served as an enjoyable alternative tothe usually highly anticipated LEADconference.

Madeline Bauer, eventscoordinator for the American AngusAssociation®, shared that theobjective of Camp Angus is to providejuniors with opportunities to meetfellow Angus youth, engage withindustry leaders and take part inactivities, promoting growth andpersonal development. She spokeabout unlocking the potential eachjunior has within them to succeed.

“Camp Angus was a success aswe could see the passion and fire thatare in these juniors’ eyes,” said Bauer.“The goal was to ignite that fire, andwe hope the juniors keep the flamegoing as they navigate through theirjunior years.”

Juniors spent the first evening inNebraska City hearing from keynoteand industry speakers whose contentlaid the foundation for the rest ofCamp Angus. Each speakeremphasized the importance of havinga plan and being able to pivot whenthe plan no longer works, especially inthe uncertain times we face today.Wednesday started with a trip toBruning Farms to visit their operationand learn from camp sponsorAllflex®, whose technology has beenimplemented by the Bruning family.

National Junior Angus Association

Rachel Smith, Osceola, represented Nebraska at the2020 Camp Angus Conference, Aug. 4-6 in Nebraska

City, Neb. More than 70 juniors from 18 states attended the conference, where they focused on personal leadership and character development.

Photo by Peyton Schmitt, American Angus Association.

Paige Lemenager, an Angus juniorfrom Illinois, expressed her excitementto still be able to attend an event likeCamp Angus in a year whenopportunities have been limited.

“I was thrilled to have anotherchance to see my Angus family,” saidLemenager. “After seeing a locationchange, I was proud to be a part ofthis association that stepped up tohost such a fun event in theseuncertain times.” Lemenager isconfident that the knowledge andrelationships gained at Camp Anguswill serve her well in the future, especially as a young Angus breeder. While she hopes to be able to attend atraditional LEAD conference nextyear, Camp Angus served as analternative opportunity for juniors toconnect, learn and grow with fellowAngus friends in a summer whenevents of its kind have been few andfar between. -Written by Peyton Schmitt,Angus Communications Intern

Juniors then participated in personaldevelopment workshops, a tree courseand ended the day with lawn games,line-dancing and a campfire. On thefinal morning, experts from Vytelle,Certified Angus Beef ® and SullivanSupply Inc. brought Camp Angus fullcircle, bringing insight on beingsuccessful and adaptable in thelivestock industry. Throughout theirtime in Nebraska, juniors also heardfinal thoughts and acknowledgmentsfrom each of the six retiring NJABmembers.

“I had the wonderful opportunity of attending Camp Angus this year. I wasextremely worried I would miss out on one ofthe great experiences that the Angus Association has to offer, due to Covid. CampAngus greatly differed from a typical LEAD asit was much smaller. This was not necessarily abad thing as we were able to spend much moretime at each session and spend more time asking questions and hanging out with all ofthe people we had met. I highly recommendthat everyone, if given the opportunity, go toLEAD, Raising the Bar, or any other conferenceoffered by the NJAA as it’s a great opportunityto learn, grow, and meet people. “ Rachel Smith
