SENATOR TOM CARLSON IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ALLIED GOLF ASSOCIATIONS COME TOGETHER AT STATE CAPITOL IN

CELEBRATION OF THE 2013 U.S. SENIOR OPEN

Lincoln, Neb – The state capitol was the sight of a very signifi-cant moment in Nebraska golf history as the U.S. Senior Open trophy was on display for a celebration of this event coming to the state July 8th – 14th at famed Omaha Country Club. Senator Tom Carlson from the 38th District in Nebraska partnered with local Allied Golf Associations from the Nebraska Golf Associa-tion, Nebraska Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Ne-braska Club Managers Association, Nebraska Women’s Amateur Golf Association, the Midwest Golf Course Owners Association and the Nebraska Section PGA in celebration of this event. The 2013 U.S. Senior Open will be broadcast to more than 100 countries, including 16 hours of live television coverage on ESPN and NBC. In addition, it’s anticipated that more than 500 media outlets will descend upon Omaha Country Club. More than 150,000 spectators and 3,000 volunteers will gather from all 50 states and around the globe to celebrate this historic moment in Nebraska. Current projections estimate that the economic im-pact of this event is $30 to $50 million.

The Nebraska Allied Golf Associations recognize that this historic event will have a profound im-pact on Nebraska’s tax revenues, tourism and charitable reach as well. Katy Boggs, Executive Director of the Nebraska Golf Course Superin-tendents Association, the Nebraska Club Managers Association said, “This historic event will draw the interest of golfers and non-golfers around the Midwest and showcase Nebraska as a golfing destination. We anticipate the success of this event to get people in Nebraska to go out and enjoy all the benefits golf offers. Whether it’s playing more with friends or intro-ducing their son or daughter to the game for the first time, this event will have a lasting impact on Nebraska for years to come.”

Special thanks to Senator Tom Carlson for spon-soring this event and to Liz Leckemby, Championship Director of the 2013 U.S. Senior Open for showcasing this beautiful trophy.

VERMEER AND TEAM CAPTURE ALL STAR PRO GOLF/E-Z-GO PRO-2 SCRATCH Will Anderson Claims Low Amateur Honor

Vermeer

Jim White

Vermeer and Team Capture All Star Pro Golf/E-Z-GO Pro-2 Scratch Ashland, NE- The Nebraska Section PGA hosted their first tournament of the year within the Section at Iron Horse Golf Club for the All Star Pro Golf/E-Z-GO Pro-2 Scratch. There were eighteen teams that were comprised of some of the best golfers from the area that attempted to navigate the beauti-ful layout of Iron Horse Golf Club. The team of Ryan Vermeer, of Oak Hills Country Club, Tad Leistico and Mike Vanier faired the best as they finished at nine under-par, which was good enough for a four shot victory in the team division. The round of the day went to Ryan Vermeer of Oak Hills Coun-try Club who captured the professional division and apprentice division after shooting a five under-par, 66. Vermeer, 2012 Ap-

prentice Player of the Year, didn’t have any winter rust as he picked up right where he left off last year. Vermeer’s round consisted of four birdies and an eagle on the difficult par five 10th hole. The team format for this tournament was one gross of the three on the par fours and par fives and the two gross of the three on par threes.

Jim White, PGA MP won the senior division after finishing with a one under-par, 70. White teed off in the early morning fog but his steady start set the tone for the round after carding back to back nine hole totals of 35. Doug Dunbar, PGA of Quail Run Golf Course finished at a two over-par 73 that left him three shots back and alone in second place in the senior division. Low amateur honors went to Will Anderson who finished the day with a two un-der-par, 69. Anderson had a roller coaster round that featured one eagle, four birdies and four bogeys. Two under-par was good enough for a three shot victory

over a three way tie for second place. David Easley, Jay Muller and Mike Vanier all finished at one over-par. There was a three way tie for second in the team division with the teams from Champions Run, Kearney Country Club and Quail Run Golf Course. Greg Neu-jahr, PGA , Kevin Kusleika and Kirby Smith made up the team from Champions Run. The team from Kearney Country Club consisted of Devon Kastler, Alex Far-rell and Nate Modlin. The final team that tied for second was made up by Doug Dunbar, PGA, Matt Krings and Mike Wiester. The Nebraska Section PGA would like to thank Brian Kuta, PGA General Manag-er of Iron Horse Golf Club for hosting the tournament. The Section would also like to give a special thank you to All Star Pro Golf and E-Z-GO dealer, Miller and Sons, for their support of this tourna-ment and the Nebraska Section PGA.

Omaha, NE- Chris Wiemers, PGA, of Happy Hollow Country Club, got things to heat up on a frigid day at Tiburon Golf Course for the Yamaha 27-Hole Pro-3Am. Wiemers tied for first place in the professional division at three under-par and helped lead his team to first place in the team division. Ryan Vermeer of Oak Hills Country Club, 2012 Champion of this event, finished tied with Wiemers and claimed the assistants division. The team of Chris Wiemers, PGA, Mike Sortino, Jeff Epstein and Hap Pocras finished at 19 under-par which was good enough for a four shot victory. Team Wiemers scorecard was highlighted by a terrific nine holes on the Great White course where they finished seven under-par in the one gross plus one net format. Nick Wanderscheid, of Green Valley Golf Course, and his teammates that included Bob Roe Jr., Mike Gregg and Mike Pape fin-ished alone in second place at 15 under-par. Doug Dunbar, PGA of Quail Run Golf Course captured the senior division after finishing at three over-par. Dunbar’s 27-holes were very steady and featured four birdies and seventeen pars. The Yamaha 27-Hole Pro-Am also kicked off the Omaha Steaks Holes of the Week. Hole #7 on the Great White nine and Hole #3 on the Hammerhead nine were featured for this tournament and Shane Zywiec, PGA and Bob Walker, PGA are both tied on top of the leaderboard at one under-par. The Omaha Steaks Holes of the Week is a season long competition for Nebraska Section PGA professionals that will end on September 9th at Firethorn Golf Club. Tracking Starts Now! Now is the time to be thinking about how you are going to track the results of your player development program-ming. Whether it is Get Golf Ready, individual lessons, PGA Sports Academy, junior camps or any other program; tracking must be considered prior to your player development activations starting. It is vital to capture key metrics on your student’s golf activity and to quantify the impact of your Player Development programs to your facility’s bottom line. This quantifies your skills as a revenue generator and the impact you make as the PGA Professional.

Why Track? Easy answer….Your employer likes to make money! If your programs are generating revenue, they will want to know. Showing your employers and board how you are increasing rounds, generating revenue, driving memberships and more will lead to job security and better compensation for you. What to Track?

1. How many new golfers have you developed and retained? 2. How much have new golfers spent at your course?

A. Merchandise B. Food & Beverage C. Range Balls D. Greens Fees E. Any other Key Performance Indicator valued by your employers

3. How many total rounds have new golfers played at your course? How to Track

1. Loyalty Cards Whether it is part of your Point-of-Sale system or an inde-pendent frequency card tracking system, a Loyalty Card is a great way to track spending and usage at a facility. It also gives your new students something that lets them feel like they are part of the family and turns your course into their home course.

2. Customer Databases Building a customer database can be as simple as an Excel Spreadsheet or as sophisticated as a Point-of-Sale System. Mark students as “GGR” or any category so at the end of the season you can determine spending.

3. Survey Tracking spending can be as low tech as a paper survey, email, phone call or any other method of reporting infor-mation from your students back to the facility. It also serves as a great way to reconnect with your students.

4. ACTIVEWorks The PGA’s partnership with ACTIVE.com is more than just event posting and online registration. The AC-TIVE tool has special features for tracking and reporting.

At The PGA of America I coordinated Get Golf Ready and graduate leagues for staff from 2010 – 2013. To track the results of these efforts I used a simple Excel Spreadsheet. Last year I was able to show my employers the financial impact my programs made on each local facility in terms of greens fees, F&B and more. I was also able to show the growth of the game in our building through increases in club rentals and hard good purchases. I felt it really in-creased my credibility to my employers and justified the work I was doing. The Season is Over, What Now? Once the season is over it is time to report, evaluate and modify. Report results to employers, board, owners and The PGA. Report results through the player development surveys and tools for MSRs and state of the industry reports. Consider utilizing PGA PerformanceTrak so you can anonymously compare your number to those in your market, state, Section and even Nationally. Evaluate your program’s with benchmarks determined through PGA PerformanceTrak and PGA Reports can help you identify strengths and weaknesses so that you can refine your programs and make them even better. For questions about PGA Reporting, Active.com and anything Player Development; please reach out to me at (402) 489-7760 or [email protected].

Joe Canny, PGA Player Development Coordinator

Note: Both Loyalty Cards and Customer Databases can serve as great tools for compensation. When going over Get Golf Ready with your employer ask them to consider awarding 5-10% of all greens fees generated from new golfers completing Get Golf Ready.

BEST PRACTICE OF THE MONTH

James Kinney, PGA Director of Instruction GolfTEC – Omaha

The most critical element of Player Development is retention. You contribute to the game of golf

when you create a new golfer. You contribute to the game of golf and your bottom line when you cre-

ate and then retain a new golfer. James Kinney, PGA Director of Instruction for GolfTEC – Omaha

has mastered the art of retention by bundling post programming into attractive lesson packages.

GolfTEC – Omaha has the very successful Lesson & Practice program. James shares “Students often

get lost after a lesson and have trouble implementing what was learned into their practice routine.

Having structured practice sessions where our instructors can provide feedback has helped us retain

students, increased customer loyalty and aided our golfers in reaching their goals.”

GolfTEC – Omaha’s High School Golfer Program has seen similar success by bundling a 3-month

practice membership with the lesson series package. Participation in the High School Golfer Program

has increased every year for the last seven years and now sees over 50 Omaha youth participate each

season.

For more information on retention programs, check out the Player Development Playbook today.

Lost days, weeks and possibly a month (s) of golf have hit us right between the eyes!! Obviously, lost revenue touches every facet of your business. What are you going to do? Exude Leadership! The days are ‘lost’; you cannot get them back. Mother Nature reared its head and showed you cannot count on early starts to the golf season in seasonal climates. However, if there was ever a time to look at trying something to increase rounds and revenue, it is NOW! The process of identifying and developing new play-ers, keeping the core engaged and “Connecting with Her” have never been more important. Last year’s weather contributed largely to the increased rounds and revenue for many of you. However, there were some who jumped on board and started some new ideas and initiatives (Get Golf Ready; Tee it For-ward) to get the ball rolling and added some new players which did contribute and add to the bottom line. But now, the proof will be in how well you can

Bruce Lubach, PGA, is the PGA of America Employment Con-sultant for the Iowa, Midwest, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections. He can be reached at: [email protected] or (402) 261-3604.

SPRING? keep, develop, add and possibly “maintain” the mo-mentum that you built last year given the condensed or shortened season that we now face. Is it going to be easy? Definitely not! What choice do you have? To sit back and do the “woe is me” will only add the doom and gloom that some are feeling. Create and generate something new and exciting to get your members, daily fee, public, etc., to show you value and want their busi-ness. Waiting around and not trying something will only add to the misery! What are you waiting for? Player Development pro-grams are there waiting for you to try. It is what you do best! Show some leadership and get going today! I know you can do it!

Encourage Juniors to Explore the PGA Golf Management University Program - Are your junior golfers considering a career in golf. Now is the time for them to explore the PGA Golf Management University Program as "Their Road to College." Encourage them to sign up for more information about the pro-gram conducted at universities nationwide by clicking here.
