Platform72 is proud to present NEBULA EVOLUTION a solo show featuring oil paintings by Archibald Prize finalist Guy Morgan. 47 Tucanae, 2010, oil on canvas, 76 x 152cm After many years of painting abstracts and landscapes, Guy turned to nebulae as his subject matter. His upcoming show explores the evolution of knowledge of the universe through the expression of his art. Fascinated with textures and layers, Guy has developed a unique style of working with highly liquid paint. To create sophisticated visual effects, he applies, throws and spatters pigment onto canvas using an eyedropper. “After developing the drip technique I decided to explore this new subject matter when my paintings Garigal Mist and Landscape 2010 (after Nolan) were compared to both clouds and the massive clouds of dust and gas [nebula] that form in space.”

Platform72 is proud to present NEBULA EVOLUTION a solo show featuring oil paintingsby Archibald Prize finalist Guy Morgan.

47 Tucanae, 2010, oil on canvas, 76 x 152cm

After many years of painting abstracts and landscapes, Guy turned to nebulae as hissubject matter. His upcoming show explores the evolution of knowledge of the universe

through the expression of his art. Fascinated with textures and layers, Guy has developed aunique style of working with highly liquid paint. To create sophisticated visual effects, he

applies, throws and spatters pigment onto canvas using an eyedropper.

“After developing the drip technique I decided to explore this new subject matterwhen my paintings Garigal Mist and Landscape 2010 (after Nolan) were compared

to both clouds and the massive clouds of dust and gas [nebula] that form inspace.”

Guy has extended his unique method of painting in the Nebula Evolution series – creatingclusters of stars on large scale canvasses, which initially appear monochrome but produce

many visual surprises, the longer one looks.

“Psychologically, Nebula paintings look like the night sky, so you expect to seethem in black and white. But look closer and they have masses of colour. I've alsoexplored dark matter in a couple of works – again they’re created to alter one’sperception – especially as your viewing point changes."

NEBULA EVOLUTION will be highlighted by a special event starring AustralianAstronomer Fred Watson, who will be talking about the Nebula Evolution subject matter

and unveiling his new portrait by Guy Morgan. Watson is best known for his work on ABC’sUniverse series, and his books including "Stargazer – the Life and Times of the

Telescope" and "Why is Uranus Upside Down? and Other Questions About the Universe”,(which won the 2008 Queensland Premier's Literary Prize for Science Writing).

NEBULA EVOLUTION opens on Thursday 20 February at Platform72’s Central ParkLiving Mall Popup, 28 Broadway, Chippendale.

The special event is on the following Thursday 27 February between 6.008.00pm withFred Watson’s illuminating talk starting at 7.00pm.
