Smart thermostats

Proximity sensing allows a user to accept and act upon external data (like the location of a smart phone).

Occupancy sensing directly detects and acts upon internal sensors (inside the thermostat).

“Learning,” optimization, or adaptive control; algorithms that learn user behavior or track usage to improve performance

Basic demand response capabilities: allows remote connection with utilities, who, with authorization, can adjust thermostat settings during peak demand periods (optional).

Precedent #1: ComEd’s “One Million Smart Thermostats” Initiative

In 2015, ComEd (along with Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas, and North Shore Gas) announced an initiative to install 1 million smart thermostats in the Chicago area by 2020

Requirements: 2017: Rebate amount of up to $150 2018: Reduced the rebate to a flat $100 Also now required to be an ENERGY STAR Certified Smart Thermostat

By the end of 2017, they had 119,000 smart t-stats installed Average savings of 300 kWh per home annually Goal for 2018: 83,000


Precedent #2: Entergy Arkansas

Energy efficiency program, in partnership with the DR program, is collecting 5-minute interval data

5 minute interval data = 5,500 data points per day 2,000,000 per year

Program is nearing 2000 installed thermostats, which is at least 200 million lines of data annually

Using this to identify HVAC system outliers, such as those that need tune-ups

What does the future landscape look like for the smart thermostat product category?

Smart home products – including thermostats – will get fancier! Like the soon-to-be-released Microsoft GLAS

It will also become more difficult to tell which products actually save energy, as manufacturers add more bells and whistles (some of which may contribute to energy increases)


New Program Opportunities

HVAC System Optimization Potential to use automation capabilities of smart thermostats to enable deeper

savings at the home level without manual intervention Savings potential exists, but how much is unknown

Remote QA / QC Data provided by smart thermostats could give us the ability to determine quality

of installation / equipment without “rolling trucks” EE + Demand Response = IDSM Many programs already use smart thermostats for DR exclusively What is the potential for EE + DR?
