Road Trip a Hit!!!!
Many of you have thanked me for the recent bus trip to LA and I am thrilled you enjoyed it. As with everything in the Chapter it takes a team to organ-ize an event. So I want to give some kudos to the ladies behind the scenes that work on this trip:
Rhoda Keegan, who accepted all of the reservations, collected scissors and had all the names listed on her ever popular “spread sheets”
Loyce Swedberg, worked with the bus company on the rental and points of interest stops (Fashion Supply Inc. and FIDM LA).
Andi Stout wrote the check to pay the bus company and, last but not least, our two “In Flight” attendants, Stepha-nie Wiesenfarth and Patricia Limber, who bravely walked up and down the aisle serving treats and water...then collected the trash.
Without their efforts you and I would not have had the great time that we did.
Now for a serious discussion. I am in my fourth year of my presidency, ASG National’s Policy and Procedures re-quire that I step down. Our Chapter is searching for a new leader and I ask that each one of you consider the op-portunity. Our Chapter is strong, in good financial shape, and a with a CAB the envy of other Chapters. If you think you might be our next President and want to chat, give me a call.
Other things on the “To Do List”:
Updating the Del Mar Fair Booth, any suggestions accepted.
Finalizing site and plans for the Annual Meeting in the fall. Save the date of October 22nd.
Special Event—details to follow
Joint Special Event with Mesa College’s Fashion Design Depart-ment
Now it is back to the sewing room for me. I hope all of you are working on something that you will enter at the San Diego Fair. Our members always come away with a whole host of rib-bons. See you at the Fair.

At FIDM 3 students had an assignment where 1 designed the fabric, a second designed a
garment while a third used the fabric to upholster a piece of furniture. This is Carolyn Stan-
difer’s interpretation.

The FIDM Gallery had just opened with costumes from some of last year’s hottest movies.
We were privileged to see these magnificent garments.

The student below is designing children’s
clothing for one of her assignments.
This is such a great idea for those unruly
little bobbins loaded with thread that tend
to unwind and make a mess. Here's a solu-
tion: mini hair elastics! Just slip one over the
bobbin and those wayward threads will stay
neat and tidy. This Sewing Tip is courtesy

How Some Neighborhood Groups
Keep the Ideas Flowing
If your Neighborhood Group (NG) is struggling to come up with fresh monthly topics for 2016, here are a few approaches to kickstart your creative thinking.
Lynn Hastings, co-leader of the Poway Evening NG says: “During the year, I take notes whenever someone seems interested in a fitting issue, a sew-ing technique, a skill picked up in a workshop, or a simple project. I add ideas from sewing magazines and sewing blogs. At our last meeting of the year I list all the topics on a sheet which we distribute and discuss.” She asks everyone to put three stars be-side the topics that interest them a lot, two stars if they have some interest, and one or no stare if they have little interest. Members can star all, some, or none. Voting is anonymous. Whatever comes out with the most stars goes onto the calendar for the next year. “Then we hunt for the people within our group who can do the presentations. This collabo-rative and cooperative method with some structure enables everyone to have input into how we spend our time at our local meeting. Some of these topics are inside information on the “Little French Jacket”, Sewing with a plan (SWAP), All about Muslins, and Asian Sewing techniques.
Nancy Stringer of the North County Super Sewers NG use a similar approach. She says: “In leader Jan Steffan’s absence (she is recovering from hip sur-gery), I asked members of our group to bring a few ideas to the November meeting for discussion and voting.
For ideas, I looked at newsletters from other chap-ters, posted on the National ASG website. We had several good topics, including making the “Little White Shirt” (which doesn’t have to be white), using zippers for something other than a closure, watch-ing sewing DVDs, alterations, and building a base wardrobe. After much discussion, our group voted to have one continuing project — the Little White Shirt — for the year, interspersed with two sessions on clothing alterations and a few sessions watching shirt-related DVDs. One of our members, Kathleen Swanson, will guide our group throughout the year on key steps and decisions in shirt construction, and several members volunteered to demonstrate cer-tain techniques such as a sleeve placket, a 1 piece collar and buttonholes. Our goal for the end of the year is for each member to have completed their own version of that essential wardrobe staple, the Little White Shirt.”
As a reminder, all ASG members are invited to visit different Neighborhood Group meetings, so take a look at the NG meetings grid in this and every Nee-dle Network newsletter to find topics that interest you! Get the most out of your ASG membership!
Retha Meneghini (right) discusses alterations to a special occasion dress with Ann Savage during the February NG meeting of the North County Super Sewers. Members of the group watched a Louise Cutting DVD in preparation for a shirt-making project, and then shared items from home that need alterations.
