A Note from the Chair
January 2013
Volume 32, Issue 1
I would like to welcome Mr. Ronny Lynch and Mr. Chris Johnson as our two new
Board members. I look forward to working closely with the Board on the future of
Indian Hills. I believe they all have great ideas that will benefit our residents.
As I look ahead to our next budget cycle and the challenges we face with our Ad
Valorem funds due to lower property taxes, I keep thinking how nice it would be
to have a group of residents that would be willing to donate their time working in
our parks for a few hours on the weekends. We could be a model program for
other communities in our area.
Our senior lunch program we are trying to get started has had some momentum
at the County level. The Senior Advisory Council has asked staff to look into the
cost of bringing the program to our Board room two days a week. Senior residents
from our area will be served a hot lunch two days a week at little or no cost to the
individual, (a suggested $2.00 per meal donation) it’s time we start getting some
much needed services for our senior population.
John Lufrano, your General Manager.
Like any kid who didn’t do his homework, I am always late getting this article to
the office.
I would like to welcome Chris Johnson and Ronny Lynch as new Board Members
and to four year terms. Good luck to both of you; I know that the Board is looking
forward to working with both of you. Great ideas are beginning to bubble to the
surface.
This year we are also looking forward to hopefully having the Douglas County
Senior Services serve meals in our Board Room twice a week. Hopefully this will
start very soon.
Our water pipeline is complete and the renovation of our sewage treatment plant
is coming along smoothly.
I look forward to seeing you all and encourage you to attend our monthly Board
meetings held on the third Wednesday of each month in our Board room.
Sincerely,
Brian Patrick

for their donated time James Allen
performed Santa and Dianne and
Francis Gilder provided horse and
carriage rides for the children. Rides
were given throughout the event from
the Board Room to the end of JLP
Road and back.
Our tremendous gratitude for James
Allen, Dianne & Francis Gilder and

Hunt….James Lee Park
Please contact the District Office if
you would like to assist in the Easter
Egg Hunt coming up in March.
Volunteers are needed to fill the eggs
with candy and hide them prior to the
event. This event requires much more
time to prepare than the actual
event itself. Come to James Lee Park
for a very intense, fast paced and
energy driven children on the hunt for
a golden egg, event!
The Easter Bunny will be available for
pictures, so parents don’t forget the
camera.

Parks:
What a pleasure it is to see so much
activity in our District parks, nice to
see the weather doesn’t beat all of
us down.
Judging by the amount of doggie
poop bags we go through at South
Sunridge Park, I would say a great
deal of usage is taking place there,
please remember dogs must be on a leash at all times.
James Lee Park continues to see a
large amount of use at the Tennis
Courts, Dog Park, Skate Park and
our miles of walking trails around
the park. Let’s all enjoy our warm
afternoons and get outside and
enjoy our wonderful parks.
Streets: We would like to remind residents of our
snow removal policy. Snow and Ice
control priority streets are in two stages.
Stage one: North/South Sunridge, Mica,
Haystack, Smoketree Ave., Plymouth,
Vista Grande from Plymouth to Jacks
Valley Road and Silverado from Park
View to Jacks Valley. Stage two: All
remaining residential streets, cul-de-sacs
and parking lots. We ask that you plan your route accordingly. It is the property
owner’s responsibility to remove snow
and ice from driveways, walkways or
sidewalks abutting private property.
Please take a moment to review the
policy in its entirety online at
www.indianhillsnevada.com.

SEWER
It has been brought to our attention that our
sewer lift stations are experiencing some
mechanical issues with pumps being plugged
up due to a heavy load of flushable baby
wipes, flushable adult wipes and disinfectant/
cleaning wipes being flushed into our system.
These wipes are not decomposing in our sewer
system before they reach the pump causing the
pumps to become completely plugged. When
the pumps become plugged there is potential
for the sewer to back up into your home. Please
refrain from flushing any of these items, thank
you for your cooperation in advance.
Sewer Service Lateral’s
Indian Hills would like to inform residents that per
the Nevada Revised Statutes Sewer lateral
maintenance or repair form the structure to the
main sewer line is the home owner’s
responsibility. It is a common misunderstanding
that lateral responsibility stops at the sidewalk.
WATER
With the freezing temperatures the District has
received many calls about frozen or broken water
pipes. Be aware of frozen pipes when you start up
your irrigation in the spring.
We have scheduled divers to inspect all five of our
water storage tanks. This will determine what
infrastructure improvements will be needed in
future years. We are pleased to report that our
water from Minden’s quarterly report came back
at 7 parts per billion for arsenic. The federal
requirement for arsenic is 10 ppb. For a complete
report please visit Minden’s website at
www.townofminden.com
Austin’s House
Indian Hills General Improvement District’s office is now a proud drop off location for Austin’s House
donations. Austin’s House provides emergency shelter and compassionate care for up to ten children
between the ages of birth to 18. The children that are placed at Austin’s House have been removed
from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Austin’s House provides care to both boys and girls who are
unable to be maintained in their own homes, until they are either reunited with their family or an
appropriate long term placement is made. Under the guidance of the placement agency Austin’s
House supports each child’s educational, health and emotional needs.
Austin’s House was built entirely with donated cash, materials and labor. Austin’s House is the ONLY
emergency children’s shelter for abused and neglected children in rural Northern Nevada. Children
from all over rural Northern Nevada are placed at Austin’s House.
The generosity of our community sustains Austin’s House. They rely on donations for more than 50% of
their operating costs. Austin’s House is located within the Indian Hills District and they are deeply
grateful for every contribution.
For more information on this wonderful cause please stop by the District’s office to pick up a flier that
Austin’s House has provided us or contact Austin’s House directly at 775-267-6711 or visit their website
at www.austinshouse.org.

STORM WATER MANAGEMENT
Storm water runoff is precipitation from rain or snow melt that flows over the ground. As it flows, over
driveways, lawns and sidewalks, it can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants and deposit
them into a storm sewer system, or directly to a lake, stream, river, wetland or coastal water. Anything
that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the water bodies we use for swimming,
fishing and providing drinking water. Polluted runoff is the nation’s greatest threat to clean water.
When washing your vehicles use a commercial car wash or wash your car on a lawn or other
unpaved surface to minimize the amount of dirty, soapy water flowing into the storm drain. Check
your car, boat, motorcycle and other machinery and equipment for leaks and spills. Make repairs as
soon as possible. Clean up fluids with an absorbent material like kitty litter or sand, and don’t rinse the
spills into a nearby storm drain. Recycle used oil and other automotive fluids at participating service
stations. Don’t dump these chemicals down the storm drain or dispose of them in your trash. When
walking your pet, remember to pick up the waste and dispose of it properly. Flushing pet waste is the
best disposal method. Leaving pet waste on the ground increases public health risks by allowing
harmful bacteria and nutrients to wash into the storm drain and eventually into local water bodies. On
a routine basis, District staff performs preventative maintenance on catch basins and storm water
detention areas. The District sweeps streets and gutters to prevent debris from entering storm drains.
