Holiday & Winter
RemindersAs a reminder, exterior holiday decorations (including
all holiday yard figurines and lights) should be removed
by January 15. Any homes with exterior holiday
decorations will not be in compliance with the
handbook starting January 16.
Meridale Handbook:
Section 5.03 Exterior Holiday Decorations
(a) Holiday decorative lighting and seasonal
decorations shall be allowed from Thanksgiving to
January 15th of the following year, provided,
however that the Committee may adopt regulations
limiting the type, intensity and number of decorative
lights and decorations so allowed. Other seasonal
decorations are approved two weeks prior to the
event until two weeks after the event.
In early 2020, the leadership of Meridale will transition
from the declarant (Mattamy) to the residents. This
means there is an opportunity for you to be involved as
a Meridale Homeowners’ Association member.
Be on the lookout for a message from Hawthorne
Management Company regarding an official call for
candidates, during which you can submit your name for
consideration, and a meet the candidates event, during
which community members can meet the residents
running for board election.

Celebrate Winter Around CharlotteWinter is often a time when we find ourselves indoors due to gloomy, cold weather. We encourage you to get out and be
active, even in the winter! Try one of the activities below:
• McGill’s Winter Wonderland at Rosie’s Wine Garden: They’ve got lights, hot chocolate, and s’mores. Bring a new,
unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots if you’re feeling generous. 4-10pm. *Free. Details
• WinterFest at Carowinds: They’ve got a 70-foot tree, 5 million twinkly lights, live shows, performers all around, and
festive hands-on activities — plus some of the usual rides. 5-10pm. *$20+. Details.
• Holidays at the Garden at Daniel Stowe, 6500 S New Hope Road, Belmont: Stroll through the gardens and see a
mile of lights. Roast a marshmallow by a crackling fire, shop, visit Santa and Mrs. Claus (select nights), and listen to
holiday music, too. 5-9pm. *$14.95+. Details.
• Ice Skating at U.S. National Whitewater Center: This new ice skating rink includes 17,000 square feet of ice on the
Upper Pond of the whitewater river, and it’ll have three areas (free skate, winter sports, and a 600-foot ice trail). The
skating area will also have a skate-up bar where you can buy craft beer, hot chocolate, and coffee. While you’re there,
check out the half-mile walking trail of holiday lights. *$20 for single activity pass. Details.

Did you know that the northern hemisphere’s Winter Solstice is December 21? This means we will experience our shortest
day of the year on December 21! Just think, there will be a little more light everyday thereafter.

Builder’s Corner (Prepared by Mattamy)Update on Cheyney Progress:
• Sanitary Sewer is complete in Phase 1. Storm drainage and final grading is in progress. Following completion,
Mattamy will be installing curb and paving the remaining section of Phase 1. For reference, this will get Meridale
Forest Drive paved to the Duke Transmission line.
• Phases 2 & 3 have been approved by City of Charlotte. Perimeter clearing is complete and perimeter erosion control
measures are installed.
• Sediment basins are being installed and should be completed by December 25. The basins have to be completed before
the City issues the Grading Permit. The Grading Permit allows Mattamy to complete the clearing and start the heavy
grading operations, which includes the extension of Meridale Forest Drive to Independence Hill Road. This is
Mattamy’s priority.
Update at Meridale:
• Mattamy is wrapping up as-built review and approval on the storm drainage system. Once approved, Mattamy will
request a street inspection from the City of Charlotte. They will mark-up areas of damaged curb, sidewalk, and streets
that require repair or replacement. Mattamy will then make repairs and place the final overlay of asphalt on all the
Meridale streets. This is a process, and weather dependent due to temperatures, but it is Mattamy’s goal to start the
repairs and complete them, along with overlay, this winter.
