Yell has much to offer to wildlife enthusiasts, hill walkers and those who simply want peace and quiet. It is also noted for its scenery and geology and provides a wide range of interests for visitors and residents alike. Crofting is a way of life on the island. Gloup is approximately 52 miles from Lerwick by road and involves an inter-island ferry crossing. A ro-ro ferry runs from Toft on the Shetland mainland to Ulsta at the south end of the island of Yell. Arriving in Yell, follow the signs to Gutcher at the north end of Yell and then continue west to Gloup. Yell is the largest of the North Isles, having a population of just under 1000. Mid Yell is the main centre of population on the island and has a shop with Post Office, junior high school, doctor’s surgery and leisure centre with heated swimming pool. There is a café with seasonal opening hours at the Gutcher Ferry Terminal about 6.5 miles away. The ro-ro ferries to Unst and Fetlar leave from Gutcher. The village of Cullivoe which has a shop, post office, public hall and primary school is approximately 3 miles away.
