Nelson College News
Friday, 14 August 2020
Kia ora tātou, Recent events have overtaken much of our thinking at the college as we
prepare for changes to the Covid Alert Level in Nelson.
As I write this, Nelson (and therefore the college) is currently in Alert
Level 2. The school remains fully open for tuition – with appropriate
hygiene procedures. At this stage sports continue, but with very few or
no spectators.
Tonight, our senior basketball team plays Waimea College in the regional
final with a very limited number of family coming to watch. The winner
goes to the national tournament in September (if that goes ahead).
Good luck to our players!
We’re keeping a watchful eye on other events such as concerts, school
balls, etc. I’ve talked with Cathy Ewing at Nelson College for Girls, and
we’re holding off on decisions around the Balls for as long as we can. I
hope that we will somehow be able to run these events but we need to
be realistic and put the safety of students first. We’ll make a decision
about the Year 12 Ball early next week.
The boarding houses remain open with all students remaining there,
with increased hygiene procedures.
Staff are doing some preliminary planning for Alert Level 3 should the
government decide to move our region that way. This would mean back
to online learning. I hope this won’t occur, but we need to be ready. As
soon as I know more, I’ll let you know.
To those attending a ‘Cottage’ meeting, I look forward to talking with
you. As the number for each meeting is well under 100 people, these
meetings are currently going ahead.

Sports Office Snippets
Sadly, the TSS Skiing has been postponed due to lack of snow.
Good luck to our Senior A Basketball who take on Waimea College tonight for that last available spot for
Nationals. Unfortunately, there are no spectators allowed. A live stream is being worked on, so check the Nelson
College Sport Facebook page for those details.
HOCKEY
Congratulations to our 1st XI Hockey Team for retaining the Mark
Wilkens Memorial Cup.
On August 1st, 2015 Old Boy Mark Wilkens collapsed and died
during a game against our 1st XI. At the time, Mark’s son Eli was a
Waimea College student. Our 2015 team wanted to pay tribute to
Mark, and so created a cup. Since 2016, the first game against
Waimea College in the Tasman Secondary Schools Tournament has
been for the Mark Wilkens Memorial Cup. There is only one school’s
name on that Cup and fortunately that remains for 2020. In a very
close match, our boys won 2-1 to retain the cup.
In other games of that tournament we beat Nayland College 2-0 and
went into the final game against Marlborough Boys College needing
to win. In another tight game we drew 2-2. This saw us and
Marlborough on equal points. Marlborough Boys College had the
better goal difference so were awarded the overall tournament
trophy.
Our team will travel to Christchurch during Tournament Week to
compete in the NZSS Hockey Nationals. This event has been
changed due to COVID-19 and is now South Island Division 1 with
the 12 top teams competing. Good luck boys.

captain Jake Patel.

RUGBY
All our teams have had good starts to their club competitions on Saturdays. A big thank you to all the coaches and managers who have put their hands up to help out. Without the parents and Old Boy support our programme would be non-existent. The 1st XV have had a bit of a tough run with injuries and big opponents but are still in the semi-final hunt. They have a couple of weeks away before their next home game against Lincoln on College Main 5 September. 1st XV Rugby lost to Christchurch Boys High School and drew with Shirley Boys High School on Tuesday.
The 2nd XV is unbeaten in the midst of their fixture list. They have had good victories over Darfield High School 1st XV and St Andrews 2nd XV. They have a tough road trip this coming Wednesday to Culverden to meet St Thomas 2nd XV. Our Under 16 teams have both had a win and a narrow loss, while the Under 15 White team is going extremely well and Kahurangi are competing strongly. All three Under 14 teams have begun the season strongly. This group has a lot to play for as we have just selected a “Rep” team to go to Wellington at the end of August to compete in the Under 14 Hurricanes Tournament. Good luck to all the teams for the next couple of weeks. Play hard but play fair.
A Generous Gift to the College
Nelson College has an incredible extended community, and a stand-out amongst the ex-staff is Wayne Greig. Last
week, Wayne donated his model of the HMAV Bounty to the school, where it will take pride of place in the library.
The detailing is amazing with phenomenal craftsmanship, and little lights throughout to bring the ship to life.
There's even a scale model of Wayne himself, to show exactly how cramped the conditions were on the lower
decks. It took Wayne 14 years to build the boat, and he collated all his research into a book, ‘Three Strands of an
Unravelling Rope’ (available in the library). Throughout his 25 years at Nelson College, Wayne maintained and
repaired the projectors, the school-owned computers, the lathes in Tech, the darkroom in Art, and just about
anything and everything! The model is well worth a look - many thanks, Wayne - such an amazing gift.

Art
The new rotation of Y10 artists kicked-off the
course with an introduction to portraiture. Their
work is inspired by Samuel Rodriguez, an American
graffiti and graphic artist whose works adorn the
buildings of California. These ‘topographical’
paintings are loosely based on the linear aesthetic
of street maps. The process starts with creating a
‘ground’ in the style of a faux wood effect, the
portrait is then painted with Indian ink, and finally
the composition is developed as the shapes are
overlaid. Left to right: Micah Mitchell, Bastian van
Zyl, Guy Thongkao-on, Preston Holder, with
Bastian commenting, “It was good to use media
and materials I had not used before”.
One-Night-Only Projections
We had a very temporary outdoor art gallery last week, with massive projections on the side of B Block. It was part
of the Information Evening for incoming Y9s – a great way to show off student work from the Art Department.

Maths Challenge!
Each newsletter, our Maths Dept sets a challenge:
Sam has 4 cars: Yellow, Blue, Green and Red.
The Red car costs $5000 more than the Blue car. The Green car was twice the price of the Yellow car. The Blue car costs the same as the Yellow car. The Green and Red cars cost the same.
What is the total cost of all four cars?
Answer at the bottom of the newsletter…
Music
Members of the Nelson College Choir performed for the weekly CAMEO community event in the Nelson Cathedral last Friday. They were fantastic representatives for the school. After a false start they managed to nail their performance of “You Will Be Found”, from the award winning musical ‘Dear Evan Hansen’, to much applause from their very supportive audience. The Choir has only just regrouped this term, after the interruptions caused by lockdown so it was fantastic to see them getting out and about, with a piece they started rehearsing only three weeks ago. Tu meke boys!
Breakfast Club
Our Breakfast Club is up and running every morning. Thanks to Sanitarium who provide us with free Weetbix, milk and Milo. This is available every morning; so if you’ve missed having breakfast at home, or you’ve had an early morning training session, just come along to the Food Tech Room between 8.00 -8.45am, and make yourself some breakfast. All welcome.

Timber!
For many years, we’ve all enjoyed the beauty of an historic Pin Oak planted in the late 1940s. But recently the tree became a hazard and had to be taken down. Mr Ken Ross (ex-Geography teacher) was asked if he could mill this for the school as the timber is prized for furniture making. He was delighted and recounted how he used to get his students to collect the acorns and plant them in the school nursery. Ken found three nails driven into the trunk when the saw cut through them, possibly for a handrail that ran down from the San or Headmaster’s House. The wood will now be dried and possibly used for a new Headmaster’s desk. Any surplus will be used in the technologies department for students’ projects.
Careers Hub
There was a great turn out for Our Parents as Career Educators
(P.A.C.E) Seminar– thanks for coming out during your busy week.
If you have any ideas for future parent seminars then send your
ideas through to me.
With subject selection coming up, supporting your sons to make
informed decisions is important. We have emailed you two
resources that may be helpful:
• a subject selection guide
• a compilation of recommended and required subjects for university study
Our Careers Passport and Gateway boys have been getting stuck into their work placements or engaging in
experiences where they can explore different pathways available to them. In the last few weeks we have had
students at NMIT exploring the Sport & Rec programme, students at Whenua Iti on a Pest Control course and we
have students lined up for a varied selection of work experience placements from sign-writing and deer farming
to hospitality.
Our boys heading down the university pathway, have been attending University Open Days and are busy working
on their Halls of Residence applications. We have another round of visits from the universities planned in the last
three weeks of term.

Sadly, but understandably, our visits from employers have been a bit thin on the ground post-Covid BUT we have
had the NZ Police here giving us an insight into the different opportunities in the Police Force.
Keeping it local - if you fancy the opportunity to come and talk with our students about the industry sector you
work in– we would love to hear from you!
Please remember that all students are welcome to make use of us in the Careers Hub, so please feel free to
encourage your son to make contact with me.

Upcoming Japanese Trivia Comp
On Friday 28 August Nelson College will be hosting the annual Japanese Trivia Championship. This event is open to all Y9 & Y10 students, and all you need is an interest in Japanese culture. The Japanese Trivia Championship is a national competition held simultaneously over the country. The competition is based solely on cultural questions (no language-based questions). There is a winner in each region, prizes for the top team, a prize for best dressed, as well as spot prizes on the night. Students will be in teams of 3 to 4 players. If you are interested, please see Mrs Keyanonda in C4. Nelson College Staffroom, Friday 28 August, 6pm-8.15pm. Contact: [email protected]
Nelson College Prep
A big day for the Prep team was coming 2nd at the Nelson Chesspower
tournament. They now have the opportunity to go to Nationals in Auckland later
this year. Well done to Artyom Prenski, Jordan Flewellen, Corey Tremblay and
Max Harrington, and special to Corey won all his games and came 1st overall.
Meanwhile, there’s more strategy and warfare going on, with the Preps building a range of ancient seige weapons.

Maths Challenge answer…
Let - Yellow = Y, Blue = B, Green = G, & Red = R
We have: B = Y, G = R, G = 2Y & R = B + 5000
Since G = R, we can say G = B + 5000, and since G = 2Y and Y = B, then G = B + 5000
Also, G = 2Y since Y = B so G = 2B
Equating these gives, 2B = B + 5000. So B = 5000, but B = Y, so Y = 5000
Then G = R and G = 2Y. Hence G = R = 2 x 5000 = 10,000
Red = $10,000, Green = $10,000, Blue = $5000 & Yellow = $5000
Total is: $30000
