A firestation in Savannah, Georgia. The site is situated in a lot that will be recieving much attention, according to the city’s urban strategy plans. To address these changes, the building cantilevers outwards, toward the busy intersection. This not only draws attention to the station but interupts the city grid in a way that will allow the station to be seen from many direc-tions. The cantiveler bar houses all the residential program spaces and looks outwards toward the large bridge in Savannah, GA. The faceted concrete on the primary level help to direct foot traffic to the front door. From the back of the project, the facets are ab-stract and dramatic. As the pedestrian works their way around the building, the facets evolve into abstracted arrows, pullling people into the space. Savannahs grid is all about plazas and green spaces. The site exists on the edge of the historic grid and the more loose grid to the west. By selling off a portion of the site and using the driveway as a closed-in plaza, the site is allowing the historic grid’s greenspace/plaza to continue. The glass wall helps to close in the plaza and allow for hidden service and parking on the other side. Due to its relatinoship to the primary level, the wall compliments the faceted pattern through a mullion system that gradually becomes the concrete pattern pointing towards the front door.

A mosque in downtown Atlanta. This site has a dramatic slope that provides optimal space for terracing. In order to create a surface for prayer the mosque design provides a cantilever to physically and visually lift the congregation towards the heavens. In order to indicate direction of prayer and rows of liturgy, wooden panels are applied to the floors and walls perpendicular to the quibla axis. Upon entry into the prayer space, views of the city connect the liturgy to the city but the direction of prayer draws the congregation into themselves for internal re-flection rather than distracting them with views and architectural ornamentation.

A mosque in downtown Atlanta. The design incorporates many separa-tions strategies found in traditional mosques around the globe. Through the use of separations strate-gies, the design of the site is more of a series of experiences that lead into the litergy space. The initial layer is breeched by entering the site and passing the perimeter wall. Once within the wall, they path is clear. there are three land terraces to separate the congregation from the urban en-vironment. The terrace gardens are modeled after the Shalimar gardens in Lahore and Sringar. Once at the top layer, another material separation is used as the threshold between garden and mosque. The design brings the congregation into a holy space both physically and mentally. The prayers space addresses and experiential quality through material and light patterns. After the time of prayer, the liturgy exits through the same series of terraces as a way to reflect and re-enter the urban world.

To design a religious building that addresses the diasporic culture of the Muslim-American and pro-poses a solution to the question of how to reconcile the vast typology of mosque architecture with the contemporary.

A rectangular prism that houses all required square foot-age. Rather than rooms and floors, this project be-came more about fitting volumes into a smooth form. It allowed me to recognize spaces in three dimensions rather than in two dimensions. The program consists of four large volumes, four medium volumes, four small volumes, and a circulation sys-tem. Other than circulation, all volumes have a specified square footage that needs to fit into an 80’x80’ floor space with an undefined height limit. This puzzle solution allows for circulation to wrap around the exterior of the building. The vertical circulation con-sists of large staircases that consume the medium volumes rather than creating additional circulation systems. All of the volumes create simple and consistent geometries in plan; the small, medium, and large spaces are squares, trapezoids, and L’s, respectively. Once the puzzle was solved, I began to develop a system of openings from one space to another and openings from the inside out. The fins on the medium spaces block the sun depending on which elevation they reside. Long horizontal windows appear on the upper half of the level to the north al-lowing the soft light in while the horizontal windows appearing on the lower half of the level to the south avoid harsh working conditions. The angled windows react inversely to interruptions on the facade and to occurrences around the edge. This puzzle and opening system allow for a pleasant procession through the building’s volumes.

A cultural center in Piedmont Park. This site has dramatic slopes and large recreational spaces. Cracked glass patterns can be applied to the topography to create a spatial organi-zation. A concentric cracking pattern originates from a concentrated point and allows for a center-focused circulation system for a public building. Retaining the current recreational benefits of the park was important in the design. To ac-complish this, the highly useful flat areas had to be preserved; thus, the building needed to occupy the sloped areas. “Cracking” the landscape and plac-ing some program below grade with functional roof space decreases loss in existing green space. The main lobby exists in this space to allow for efficient circulation from the multiple entrances. Lecture halls benefit from trapezoidal spac-es generated by the aggregate and galleries use the aggregate to act as either a single unified space or multiple smaller spaces, and their placement in the building allows for high ceilings and clerestory win-dows to provide natural light. All spaces feed into the grand lobby and connect to the park though con-trolled sightlines. Sightlines and other formal aspects of the project ensure that people will be drawn to the spaces within while still enjoying the essential park experience.

An urban plan for the previous site of the Overlook Apart-ments. The design of ‘Overlook’ is intended to bring a live, work, play environment to the west Atlanta area. This plan is apart of larger plan that exists to the east, across the creek. They are connected through the main street and through a series of paths and bridges. The Overlook site is extremely steep topogra-phy on all edges and is the third tallest hill in all of Atlanta. One of the benefits of this site is its amazing views of the future largest park, Quarry Park, Midtown Atlanta, an Downtown Atlanta. The cities plan for the area is for it to be a Town Center due to its adjacency to the Bankhead MARTA transit station. Because of this, certain density requirements needed to be met. The design includes a monorail system from the MARTA station to the peak of the hill. At the peak is the most dense buildings. These buildings are a complex with a large hotel and conference center that help to attract people to this site. Most of the buildings are resi-dential buildings with retail accessible at pedestrian level while some contain office space above the retail. Some proposed building programs include a strip of restaurants along east with decks that provide optimal views of the city. The basic street plan was based off of the to-pography. The main street that cuts into the hill follows the city grid but breaks off at regular intervals and begins to flow into the hill.

A boutique hotel on a hill. A boutique hotel is an ideal program for this site because of the views of Midtown Atlanta, Downtown Atlanta, and the future largest park in Atlanta. The best way to capitolize on those views would be to use them to bring people to the area and to sell them. A botique hotel can best capture these views by opening the hotel rooms outwards. The connection to nature here is important. While this site is still in the city, its surrounds feel as if you are far re-moved. One could visit this site to commune with nature while only 10 minutes from Downtown. The program includes a spa, a pool, a restaurant, and ballrooms that all look out towards the city or park. The inside of the curve looks towards the activity in the square with a panel system to protect from the sun and an outdoor theater space to attract more business to the site. With the boutique hotel and business from the square, this urban project is sure to help revitalize the westside of Atlanta.
