Learning in Year R This week we have been taking part in ‘active week’. This began by Reception taking part in a sports morning, where they participated in a range of activities with Year 1. All of this week, we have been promoting healthy living by ensuring teeth are clean. Children have responded really well to this and have been taking ownership by cleaning their teeth after lunch. We have continued with Balance-ability, with Dolphin class having completed the course and doing brilliantly! Last week, our teddies were sadly stolen by a band of pirates and we hatched a plan to rescue them by having a Pirate Day and dressing up. Reception have done fantastically completing the many tasks set by the pirates and we are happy to announce that our teddies have now been returned!

Learning in Year 2 Why do we like to be beside the seaside? This is Year 2’s big question for their new Nelson Learning Challenge topic. The children have been investigating the human and physical features of the coast and thinking about why the seaside is such a popular holiday destination. The children have also been exploring the different jobs that are found at the beach and using this information to compare the positive and negative impacts of tourism. This is all in preparation for their school trip in a couple of weeks to Littlehampton Look and Sea Centre. They will be seaside experts by then! In other learning the children have been looking at time and becoming more confident with time intervals, having solved problems on how long different activities can take. Finally, Year 2 put their creativity in action as they wrote their own section of ‘James and the Giant Peach’. The children thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and describing the different characters in the story. The children were able to use the different sentence structures they have discussed this week to write an exciting narrative about James and his friends.

Learning in Year 4 Last week Year 4 began learning how to write a discussion text. Following on from the themes in Fly! Eagle, Fly! the children considered whether or not it is alright from animals to be kept in captivity and zoos in particular. They researched reasons for and against, as well as sharing their own thoughts and opinions on the issue. In our classes we looked at the structure of a discussion text and how to use topic sentences to start paragraphs. On Wednesday the children in 4P independently started a discussion about the E.U. referendum and I was impressed with their knowledge and understanding. It is brilliant that Nelson has so many students who are interested in what is happening in the world and lots of children wished that they were able to vote too.

Following last week’s results the children have applied their knowledge of discussion texts to write a piece about the pros and cons of being a member of the European Union. We have gathered key information from both the leave and remain campaigns by watching Newsround reports and reading transcripts of reports by Newsbeat. Children will then present their work, have the chance to share their thoughts and discuss what our lives could be like now that the U.K. has left the E.U.

Learning in Year 6 Year 6 have taken part in a fun-filled week of activities. On Monday, we went to Kidzania where the children became adults for the day. They had the opportunity to taste what working life may be like. On Tuesday, we went to the beautiful village

Attendance & Success High attendance: more successful children. We set high standards for attendance and punctuali-

ty. Our target for attendance is 97%+. Good attendance is strongly linked to pupil achievement.

What time should my child be in class by each day? The bell is rung at 8.45 in the morning to allow children to start coming in to school as part of our ‘soft start’ in to school in the morning. Children in Year 3, 4 5 and 6 need to be in class for registration by 8.55am. Arriving after 8.55am means a child is late. For children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 registra-tion closes at 9.00am. Arriving after 9.00am means a child is late.

* This is defined as the total number of minutes lateness of children within the class Whole School Attendance for this week is 95.4% Whole School Attendance to date for the whole school is 95.7%

of West Wycombe where we climbed St Lawrence's church spire which is 24metres high. We also visited the Hellfire caves which lie 300 feet under the church and extend for a quarter of a mile from the cave's entrance. On Wednesday and Thursday the children had the time of their lives kayaking and raft building! Teepees kept us dry (ish) and the fire kept us warm. The children are now looking forward to their next trip when we take on the tree top challenge at Go Ape on Friday.

Dramatic Edge Dance Festival On Tuesday children from Year 3 and 4 took to the stage at Twickenham Academy and performed their piece ‘Carnival Kids’ inspired by the upcoming Rio Olympics. Their performance was vibrant and filled with energy as they got the audience up and dancing! The dance group received an award for performing the ‘Most beautiful and energetic dance’ award which was well deserved after all the effort the children have put into practicing for the festival. A massive well done goes to Caitlin, Lily, Lottie, Micah, Zac, Imran, Alina, Sienna, Maria, Kayla, Beryl, Megan, Sam, Lily and Yasmin for representing Nelson. Another well done goes to Ria and Eliza, unfortunately the girls were unwell on the day but they have both been stars throughout our practice sessions! Finally a big thank you to all the parents that came to support us and dance! It has been a real pleasure working with the children and they should be proud for their commitment and drive. You can view a recording of the performance from our website Twitter feed. Miss Doyle

Year 2 Cluster Festival Ten children from Year 2 took part in the Cluster Festival on Monday at Twickenham Academy and they were sporting superstars! The children had to complete a number of activities including hurdles and dribbling footballs as well as tackling other

Caleb, Ashpreet, Sadie, Ellie, Demi and Emma for

representing Nelson at the event.

The Olympics are coming …... Next Monday Nelson has a special visitor coming in the afternoon. Jessica Walker has been successful in securing a place on Great Britain’s women’s canoe team for the Rio Olympics this summer; this will be Jessica’s third Olympic Games! Jessica will be coming in to talk to Year 1, 2 and 3 about the upcoming Olympic Games and will be answering questions that the children may have about the games and other events she has competed in as well as finding out what it takes to be a dedicated athlete.

We still have a few places available, and so if you know someone who might be interested, please contact the school office for more details.

The school car park Sadly we have had a number of issues with parents bringing their cars into the school car park and driving in a dangerous manner, putting the safety of children at risk. In the past we have said that parents can use the car park only after 4pm, but regrettably we are now going to have to
